Overview
Sheraton on the Falls, currently commonly identified as Sheraton Fallsview Hotel, is a 22-storey resort hotel in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. It occupies a prominent position directly opposite Niagara Falls in the city’s main tourism district and serves as a central hotel property within the Falls Avenue Resort complex. The hotel is associated with the Sheraton Hotels and Resorts brand, which is part of Marriott International, although the ownership and local operating arrangements for the individual property are not specified in the available reference material. The property occupies a site with more than a century of accommodation history. A hotel known as the Parkside Inn was established there in the early 1890s. The original building was later enlarged and passed through several names and ownership changes, including the Clifton Inn, The Inn, and Fox Head Hotel. Sheraton Hotels acquired the property in 1951. The earlier structure was eventually closed, partly adapted for Tussaud’s Waxworks, and subsequently demolished. A new Sheraton-Foxhead Motor Inn opened on the site in 1966. The hotel’s present form developed through a major redevelopment connected with the Maple Leaf Village amusement park and the wider Falls Avenue resort district. After the amusement park declined, the 14-storey hotel was extensively gutted and expanded by eight additional floors. It reopened in 2000 as the 22-storey Sheraton on the Falls Hotel. The property was renovated again in 2021 and adopted the Sheraton Fallsview name. This naming history can cause confusion with the nearby Marriott on the Falls, which was itself known as a Sheraton property between 1993 and 2011 but is a separate hotel. The hotel’s core proposition is a full-service resort stay built around proximity and views of Niagara Falls. Its facilities include approximately 669 guestrooms and suites, falls-view dining, conference and meeting space, and indoor connections to attractions, restaurants, and neighboring hotels within the Falls Avenue Resort. The complex covers approximately 20 acres and provides access to destinations such as the Fallsview Indoor Waterpark, Casino Niagara, the Hershey Store, Rainforest Cafe, Hard Rock Cafe, and Adventure City. Indoor walkways also connect the hotel with Crowne Plaza Niagara Falls–Fallsview and other parts of the resort district. With an approximately 200,000-square-foot conference centre, the property also serves meetings, conventions, group travel, and events in addition to leisure guests. Its location and rooftop webcam infrastructure reinforce its role as a highly visible Niagara Falls tourism property. The hotel has operated through multiple changes in building form, brand presentation, and surrounding attractions while retaining its principal identity as a Sheraton-branded Fallsview resort hotel.
History
The Sheraton Fallsview property stands on a historically important hotel site in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The first documented hotel on the location was the Parkside Inn, constructed in the early 1890s on Clifton Hill. It was a modest three-storey building with an observatory and period amenities that included running water, electricity, and gas. The inn was later expanded by incorporating two neighboring buildings into the original structure. Between 1914 and 1921, the Parkside Inn functioned as a wing of the adjacent Clifton Hotel. The Clifton Hotel later burned in 1932. In 1923, Howard Fox acquired the Parkside Inn and renamed it the Clifton Inn. The name was subsequently shortened to The Inn. Following a remodeling project in 1926, the property became the Fox Head Hotel, adopting an imitation old-English-inn design. Sheraton Hotels purchased the property in 1951, when it was still known as the Foxhead Hotel. The original hotel closed in 1958. It reopened the next year after part of the western end was converted into Tussaud’s Waxworks, an attraction that remained on the site. The surviving portions of the historic structure were ultimately demolished in 1964. A replacement property, the Sheraton-Foxhead Motor Inn, was constructed on the site and opened in 1966. It formed part of Maple Leaf Village amusement park, alongside the Brock-Sheraton and the Sheraton Motor Inn, the latter now associated with the Skyline Inn. This period established the location as part of a broader integrated tourism and entertainment destination rather than simply an isolated hotel. After Maple Leaf Village declined and ceased operating as an amusement park, the Sheraton-Foxhead building underwent a substantial redevelopment. The existing 14-storey hotel was gutted, and eight additional floors were added. The enlarged structure reopened in 2000 as the 22-storey Sheraton on the Falls Hotel. The redevelopment gave the property its modern scale and strengthened its position as a major falls-view hotel. The hotel was renovated again in 2021 and renamed Sheraton Fallsview. The terminology remains potentially confusing because the nearby Marriott on the Falls was known as Sheraton on the Falls from 1993 to 2011, even though it is a separate property. The present Sheraton Fallsview is the cornerstone hotel of Falls Avenue Resort, a large tourism complex with hotels, restaurants, attractions, walkways, and entertainment facilities. Today, the property combines hotel accommodation, falls-oriented dining, conference services, and resort connectivity. Its facilities include 669 guestrooms and suites and an approximately 200,000-square-foot conference centre. Indoor links connect guests with the Fallsview Indoor Waterpark, Casino Niagara, the Crowne Plaza Niagara Falls–Fallsview, and other attractions and dining venues. The hotel also hosts live webcams showing views of the Horseshoe Falls and Rainbow Bridge, extending its visitor-facing role beyond its physical accommodation business.
