Overview
Delta Hotels is a Canadian-origin hotel brand that operates primarily in North America and is now part of Marriott International. The brand traces its beginnings to 1962, when William Pattison and business partners opened the 68-room Delport Inn in Richmond, British Columbia. The property was renamed the Vancouver Airport Inn later that year, and Western Hotels managed it for a period before management returned to the owners. During the middle and late 1960s, Delta Developments built and acquired additional motels in British Columbia, including properties on Vancouver Island and in the province's interior. After Driver Developments acquired Delta Developments in 1969 and subsequently encountered financial difficulties, Delta Hotels Limited assumed ownership and operation of the hotels and motels in 1970. The early business was concentrated in British Columbia, and by the middle of the 1970s the portfolio had contracted to four properties. Delta then began a broader Canadian expansion, entering the Toronto market in 1975. By 1980, its six British Columbia properties were matched by six properties outside the province. By 1985, the chain operated four properties in British Columbia, four in Ontario, and five in four other provinces. This expansion established Delta as a national Canadian lodging operator rather than a regional British Columbia motel group. Ownership changed several times as the chain developed. In 1988, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Great-West Lifeco, and Bill Pattison sold Delta to Realstar Group of Toronto. About a decade later, Realstar and Lai Sun Group sold the business to Canadian Pacific Hotels. During the 1990s, Delta also operated a United States property, the Delta Court of Flags Hotel in Orlando, Florida. In 1999, following Canadian Pacific Hotels' acquisition of the Fairmont brand, six additional Canadian Pacific properties were rebranded to support the Delta network. Delta became a wholly owned subsidiary within the corporate structure associated with Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, although the two brands occupied different market classifications: Fairmont was positioned as a four-star brand, while Delta was then described as three-star. British Columbia Investment Management Corporation acquired Delta in 2007. Under that ownership, the brand expanded substantially. By 2013, the portfolio had reached 40 properties, consisting of 31 managed hotels, including 10 where the real estate was owned by the business, and nine franchised properties. The model therefore combined direct real-estate participation, management contracts, and franchising. Marriott International acquired Delta Hotels in 2015. The transaction made Marriott the largest full-service hotel company in Canada at that time and transformed Delta from a predominantly Canadian chain into a Marriott brand with a wider international growth platform. Two United States properties were added in 2016, and the number of U.S. properties later exceeded the Canadian total. International development subsequently reached Shanghai, Frankfurt, Dubai, the United Kingdom, and Istanbul. In August 2022, Marriott announced that 23 Marriott Hotels properties in the United Kingdom would be rebranded as Delta Hotels by Marriott, further increasing the brand's presence in that market. The brand also became integrated with Marriott's customer-loyalty ecosystem. In 2016, Delta Privilege benefits were extended to other Marriott locations, while Marriott cards were made usable at Delta properties. Marriott Bonvoy replaced the various Marriott group rewards programs in 2019. Today, Delta Hotels is presented as a four-star, full-service lodging brand within Marriott International, with hotels and resorts serving business and leisure travelers in North America and selected international markets.
History
Delta Hotels developed from a small British Columbia lodging operation into an international Marriott hotel brand. Its origins date to June 1962, when William Pattison and business partners opened the 68-room Delport Inn in Richmond, British Columbia. Western Hotels changed the property's name to the Vancouver Airport Inn in September of that year and managed it until January 1964. The ownership group subsequently pursued growth through Delta Developments, which built four motels on Vancouver Island between 1965 and 1967 and acquired or leased two more properties in the interior of British Columbia. Driver Developments purchased Delta Developments in 1969, but financial problems associated with Driver's wider investment portfolio soon affected the business. In 1970, Delta Hotels Limited assumed ownership and operation of the hotels and motels. The chain was reduced to four properties by the middle of 1974, indicating that its early development included both expansion and consolidation rather than uninterrupted growth. Delta began rebuilding its network outside British Columbia in 1975, when it entered the Toronto market. By 1980, the six properties in British Columbia were matched by six outside the province. Five years later, the portfolio included four British Columbia hotels, four in Ontario, and five spread across four additional provinces. The chain's ownership changed in 1988, when Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Great-West Lifeco, and Bill Pattison sold it to Realstar Group of Toronto. Approximately ten years later, Realstar and Lai Sun Group sold Delta to Canadian Pacific Hotels. During the 1990s, Delta maintained a limited United States presence through the Delta Court of Flags Hotel in Orlando, Florida. In 1999, after Canadian Pacific Hotels acquired Fairmont, six of its properties were rebranded to supplement the existing Delta portfolio. Delta became a wholly owned subsidiary within the Fairmont Hotels and Resorts corporate structure, although the two brands were differentiated in the market: Fairmont was classified as four-star and Delta as three-star at that stage. British Columbia Investment Management Corporation acquired Delta in 2007. The brand expanded under BCI, reaching 40 properties by 2013. Of those, 31 were managed properties, 10 of which involved owned real estate, while nine were franchised. This combination allowed Delta to grow through more than one operating model. Marriott International acquired the chain in 2015. The deal made Marriott the largest full-service hotel company in Canada and gave Delta access to Marriott's international distribution, development, and loyalty infrastructure. Two United States properties were added in 2016, and the brand subsequently expanded to Shanghai, Frankfurt, Dubai, the United Kingdom, and Istanbul. In August 2022, Marriott announced that 23 Marriott Hotels properties in the United Kingdom would be converted to the Delta Hotels by Marriott brand. Following the acquisition, Delta's rewards arrangements became increasingly integrated with Marriott. Delta Privilege benefits were extended to other Marriott locations in 2016, while Marriott cards were made available for use at Delta hotels. In 2019, Marriott Bonvoy replaced the group's separate legacy rewards programs. Delta Hotels is now operated as a four-star Marriott brand comprising hotels and resorts, with its strongest historical presence in Canada and the United States and a growing international footprint.
