Overview
Pullman Jakarta Indonesia Thamrin CBD is a five-star hotel on Jalan M.H. Thamrin in central Jakarta, Indonesia. The property forms part of the Wisma Nusantara complex and is one of four hotels located around the Selamat Datang Monument, a prominent landmark in the capital. Its current identity combines a historically significant Jakarta hotel with the international Pullman Hotels and Resorts operating brand managed by Accor. The hotel opened on 2 December 1972 as the President Hotel. Its construction was linked to the development of the 30-story Wisma Nusantara tower, a project originally initiated during the presidency of Sukarno in 1964. Economic instability and hyperinflation interrupted the project, but construction resumed in 1969 after the Indonesian government reached an arrangement with Mitsui. The hotel was designed in part to serve Japanese business visitors to Jakarta and was built by a consortium including Kajima, Taisei Corporation, and Total Bangun Persada. At opening, the Indonesian government held a majority interest, while Mitsui and Japan Airlines held minority stakes. Management was entrusted to Japan Airlines Development, which subsequently became associated with the Nikko Hotels name. The property underwent a major refurbishment from 1987 to 1991. The work modernized its guest rooms, restaurants, and convention facilities, while reducing the room count from 354 to 315. In 1992, Indocement acquired a substantial stake. Following the political transition after the end of Indonesia's New Order period, the Indonesian government and Indocement sold their interests to Guthrie GTS, a Singapore-based property company, while Mitsui retained a minority position in the hotel-owning company, PT Wisma Nusantara International. A major expansion was completed in March 2003. The 14-story extension, designed by Kenzo Tange & Associates and constructed by PP Taisei and Total Bangun Persada, added new accommodation capacity and increased the overall room inventory to 427. At the same time, the property was renamed Hotel Nikko Jakarta, reflecting its long-running relationship with Nikko Hotels. On 19 January 2012, the hotel ended its nearly three-decade association with Nikko Hotels. Accor was appointed to manage the property under the Pullman Hotels and Resorts brand, leading to the current name, Pullman Jakarta Indonesia Thamrin CBD. A further renovation, undertaken with Singapore-based architecture firm Wilson & Associates, was completed on 13 February 2014. The active hotel has 427 rooms distributed between the original Main Tower and the later Pullman Tower. Accommodation categories range from Superior rooms to Accent Suites, with Grand Deluxe and Executive rooms located in the Pullman Tower. Its facilities include four dining venues—Kahyangan Restaurant, Le Chocolat, Sana Sini Restaurant, and The Back Room—along with a swimming pool, fitness center, spa, and 19 meeting rooms. The property serves business travelers, conference and event guests, leisure visitors, and guests seeking a centrally located full-service hotel in Jakarta's central business district.
History
The history of Pullman Jakarta Indonesia Thamrin CBD is closely connected to the development of Wisma Nusantara, one of central Jakarta's notable early skyscraper projects. The tower's design was initiated by President Sukarno in 1964, but construction was interrupted by the severe inflation and economic turmoil affecting Indonesia. Work resumed in 1969 after the government under President Suharto secured cooperation with Mitsui. The broader project was expanded to include a star-rated hotel intended especially for Japanese businesspeople visiting Jakarta. Construction of the hotel and tower began in April 1970. Kajima, Taisei Corporation, and Total Bangun Persada were among the contractors, and the project had a reported budget of Rp11.5 billion. The hotel was completed in November 1972 and inaugurated on 2 December 1972 by President Suharto and Jakarta Governor Ali Sadikin. It opened as the President Hotel. Operational responsibility was assigned to Japan Airlines Development, a Japan Airlines subsidiary that later became associated with Nikko Hotels. The original ownership structure comprised a 55 percent Indonesian government stake, a 40 percent Mitsui stake, and a 5 percent Japan Airlines stake. In May 1986, the President Hotel was one of several Jakarta locations targeted by the Japanese Red Army. The group also targeted the United States and Japanese embassies. The explosives placed at the hotel failed to detonate, and the incident caused no casualties. The alleged mastermind, Tsutomu Shirosaki, was later captured by the United States and sentenced to 30 years in prison in 1998. The hotel's first major refurbishment took place between July 1987 and July 1991. Guest rooms, restaurants, and the convention hall were renovated. The project reduced the room count from 354 to 315, and the completed renovation was inaugurated by Vice President Soedharmono on 26 July 1991. In October 1992, Indocement acquired a 31 percent interest in the hotel. Following the fall of the New Order regime, the Indonesian government and Indocement sold their interests to Guthrie GTS, a Singaporean property company. Mitsui retained a minority interest in PT Wisma Nusantara International, the company associated with ownership of the property. The next major stage came in March 2003, when a 14-story extension was opened north of the original building. PP Taisei and Total Bangun Persada constructed the addition, which was designed by Kenzo Tange & Associates. The extension raised total room capacity to 427 and accompanied the change of name to Hotel Nikko Jakarta. The long-standing Nikko relationship ended on 19 January 2012. Accor took over management under its Pullman Hotels and Resorts brand, and the property became Pullman Jakarta Indonesia Thamrin CBD. A further renovation was carried out with Wilson & Associates, an architecture firm based in Singapore, and was completed on 13 February 2014. Today, the hotel operates across the original 1972 Main Tower and the 2003 Pullman Tower. Its 427 rooms include categories from Superior rooms through Accent Suites; Grand Deluxe and Executive rooms are located in the Pullman Tower. The property also provides four named dining venues, a pool, fitness center, spa, and 19 meeting rooms. Its central location near the Selamat Datang Monument and Jakarta's business district supports a mix of corporate, conference, leisure, and diplomatic hospitality demand.
