Overview

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is a Canadian-origin luxury hospitality brand operated by Accor. Its identity is closely associated with historic landmark hotels, grand urban properties, destination resorts, and a service style that combines local heritage with full-service luxury. Although the brand dates its namesake history to the opening of the Fairmont San Francisco in 1907, its present portfolio also descends from the much older hotel operations developed by Canadian Pacific Railway and later consolidated under Canadian Pacific Hotels. The Canadian Pacific connection was central to the formation of the brand. From the late nineteenth century, Canadian Pacific developed hotels along its railway routes to support passenger travel and promote tourism in western Canada. This program produced or assembled properties such as Fairmont Banff Springs, Fairmont Château Lake Louise, Fairmont Château Frontenac, Fairmont Empress, Fairmont Palliser, and Fairmont Royal York. The railway-hotel tradition gave the later Fairmont brand a distinctive collection of properties that functioned not only as accommodations but also as architectural and cultural landmarks. The separate Fairmont business began with the San Francisco property associated with James Graham Fair. The hotel survived the 1906 earthquake and fires, was restored under architect Julia Morgan, and opened in 1907. Under the Swig family from the mid-twentieth century onward, Fairmont Hotels Management expanded beyond San Francisco through acquisitions, new construction, and management contracts. Its American portfolio eventually included properties such as Fairmont Roosevelt in New Orleans, Fairmont San Jose, The Plaza in New York, and Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston. In 1999, Canadian Pacific Hotels acquired a controlling interest in Fairmont Hotels Management. Canadian Pacific subsequently renamed its hotel portfolio Fairmont Hotels & Resorts in 2001, retaining many of its most prominent properties under the Fairmont name. The company was spun out of Canadian Pacific Limited later that year as an independently traded hotel company. This restructuring transformed Fairmont from a collection of related hotel businesses into a recognizable international luxury brand. Fairmont broadened its offer during the early 2000s. It developed Willow Stream Spa as a branded wellness concept, introduced Fairmont Heritage Place as a residence and timeshare offering, and entered the Middle East through Fairmont Dubai. The company also expanded in markets including Mexico, China, Azerbaijan, India, and the United Arab Emirates. In 2006, Colony Capital acquired Fairmont and combined it with Raffles Hotels & Resorts and Swissôtel to create Fairmont Raffles Hotels International, while the individual hotel brands continued to operate separately. Accor acquired FRHI in 2016, bringing Fairmont into a global hotel group with a large international distribution and loyalty ecosystem. Under Accor, Fairmont has continued to emphasize luxury hotels with strong physical identity, destination relevance, food and beverage programs, meetings and events, wellness, and residential or resort extensions. Openings and launches in Turkey, Brazil, Morocco, South Korea, and Japan extended the brand beyond its traditional North American and European base. Fairmont Tokyo, opened in 2025, marked the brand's reported debut in Japan. Fairmont's business scope includes hotel accommodation, restaurants and bars, meetings and conferences, weddings and events, spas, leisure facilities, and selected branded residences or ownership products. Its flagship value is less a standardized design language than the preservation and reinterpretation of memorable places: historic city hotels, mountain resorts, coastal destinations, and architecturally significant buildings. The brand remains active internationally as part of Accor's luxury portfolio.

History

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts emerged from two related but initially separate hotel traditions: the Canadian Pacific railway-hotel system and the Fairmont hotel business founded around the Fairmont San Francisco. Canadian Pacific Railway began developing hotels along its routes in the late nineteenth century. These properties helped make remote landscapes accessible to travelers while providing grand accommodations in major Canadian cities and resort destinations. The railway's hotel department built, acquired, and managed properties including the Banff Springs, Château Lake Louise, Château Frontenac, Empress, Palliser, and Royal York. Canadian Pacific later acquired Canadian National Hotels in 1988 and expanded through the purchase of Delta Hotels and Princess Hotels. The Fairmont name originated with the San Francisco hotel connected to businessman James Graham Fair. The nearly completed building survived the 1906 earthquake but was damaged by the fires that followed. After restoration supervised by Julia Morgan, it opened in 1907. Benjamin Swig acquired the hotel in 1945, and the Swig family subsequently developed Fairmont Hotels Management into a small American luxury chain. The company acquired the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans in 1965, opened Fairmont San Jose in 1987, assumed management of The Plaza in New York in 1995, and acquired Boston's Copley Plaza in 1996. The two traditions converged in April 1999, when Canadian Pacific Hotels, Kingdom Hotels International, and Maritz Wolff & Co. acquired Fairmont Hotels Management. Canadian Pacific held the majority interest. In 2001, Canadian Pacific Limited reorganized its businesses and renamed Canadian Pacific Hotels and Resorts Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. The company retained many of the most prestigious railway and urban properties while moving other assets to the Delta Hotels subsidiary. Later in 2001, Fairmont was separated from Canadian Pacific Limited in the parent company's broader starburst restructuring and became independently traded. During the early 2000s, Fairmont pursued both geographic and product expansion. It created the Willow Stream Spa concept, first developed at Fairmont Empress, and introduced Fairmont Heritage Place in 2003 as a branded residence and timeshare-style offering. The brand entered the Middle East with Fairmont Dubai and expanded into Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, China, Azerbaijan, and India. In 2006, Colony Capital acquired Fairmont and brought it together with Raffles and Swissôtel under Fairmont Raffles Hotels International. The three hotel brands maintained separate identities while sharing ownership and corporate infrastructure. Ownership and shareholder arrangements changed during the FRHI period. In 2010, Kingdom Hotels sold part of its FRHI stake to Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment, altering the company's shareholder balance. Fairmont continued to target the Middle East, opening or affiliating with properties in locations such as Mecca and Palm Jumeirah, while also reopening the historic Peace Hotel in Shanghai and expanding into India. The company acquired the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley in 2014. Accor announced the acquisition of FRHI in 2015 and completed the transaction in 2016. The deal placed Fairmont within Accor's luxury portfolio and gave Accor greater access to North American luxury hospitality, while giving Fairmont access to a larger global operating, distribution, and loyalty platform. Subsequent expansion included Fairmont Quasar Istanbul in 2017, the brand's first reported South American hotel in Brazil in 2019, Fairmont Taghazout Bay and Fairmont Ambassador Seoul in 2021, and Fairmont Tokyo in 2025. The brand's contemporary strategy continues to combine new-build hotels with the preservation and operation of historically significant properties.
