Overview

ibis is a French-origin international hotel brand operated by Accor. It was created in 1974 as an effort by the then Novotel-SIEH group to develop a more affordable hotel format than the existing Novotel model. The first ibis hotel opened in Bordeaux, France, establishing the brand around a relatively simple proposition: dependable accommodation, standardized facilities, practical locations and accessible prices. Rather than positioning itself as a luxury or highly individualized hospitality concept, ibis developed as a scalable economy and midscale-adjacent network intended for business travelers, short-stay guests, tourists and customers seeking predictable overnight accommodation. The brand expanded rapidly in France during its early years. By 1988, it operated 182 hotels in the country. International development followed, including the opening of the first ibis hotel in the United States in 1983. The American business expanded through Texas, Florida and Georgia but was later withdrawn, with ibis leaving the US market by the end of the 1980s. In the United Kingdom, the network had reached eight hotels by 1995. This early expansion demonstrated both the portability of the brand's operating model and the challenges of applying a standardized economy-hotel proposition in every national market. ibis also experimented with service commitments intended to distinguish a value-oriented hotel from a purely low-cost provider. In 1997, it introduced a 15-minute guarantee under which the hotel would provide the stay if a room-related customer problem could not be resolved within 15 minutes. The initiative expressed a broader brand promise centered on responsiveness and operational consistency. During the 2000s, ibis continued expanding internationally. By 2004, it operated 700 hotels in 36 countries. Between 2003 and 2005, the brand opened properties in South Korea, China and Thailand. In 2009, it reached 100,000 rooms, opened its first hotel in Moscow, reached 50 hotels in Brazil and entered Japan with its first property there. A major strategic change occurred in 2011, when Accor reorganized its economy-oriented hotel portfolio. All Seasons was rebranded as ibis Styles, while Etap Hôtel became ibis Budget. This created an ibis economy “megabrand” with three related formats: the standard ibis brand, the more design-oriented ibis Styles, and the more stripped-down ibis Budget. The parent group also upgraded selected elements associated with the ibis experience, including mattresses, pillows and digital access. The restructuring gave Accor a clearer family architecture in the economy segment and helped the combined ibis family become one of Europe's largest hotel operations by 2013. The core ibis brand continued to expand independently within that family. It opened its 1,000th hotel in January 2014. In 2012, the brand tested Sleep Art, an installation using a robot to translate a sleeper's movements, sounds and heat variations into a painting; the concept was subsequently adapted into a mobile application. This initiative illustrated ibis's use of digital and experiential projects to supplement its functional accommodation offer. ibis remains an active global hotel brand within Accor. The network includes hotels in major cities, transport-linked locations and other destinations, with operations spanning Europe and multiple international regions. According to the cited Wikipedia reference, at 31 December 2025 the ibis brand itself, excluding ibis Styles and ibis Budget, comprised 1,242 hotels and 154,177 rooms worldwide. Its contemporary positioning combines economy-oriented pricing with recognizable standards, basic food and beverage services, connectivity and convenient access. The related ibis Styles and ibis Budget brands extend the family into differentiated design-led and value-focused propositions, but they are separate brands and should not be counted as ordinary ibis properties.

History

ibis was established in 1974 by the Accor group, then known as Novotel-SIEH, as a lower-cost hotel concept derived from the group's Novotel experience. The first property opened in Bordeaux. The model emphasized repeatability: rooms and services could be delivered through a common operating framework, allowing the company to offer recognizable accommodation at a lower price than a conventional full-service hotel. The French network grew quickly, reaching 182 hotels by 1988. The brand also attempted international expansion during this period. Its first United States hotel opened in 1983, and properties followed in Texas, Florida and Georgia. The American operation was ultimately discontinued by the end of the decade. In the United Kingdom, ibis had eight hotels by 1995. These developments established the brand as an international rather than exclusively French chain, while also showing that market conditions and local competition could limit the portability of the concept. In 1997, ibis introduced a 15-minute guarantee. The program promised a stay if hotel staff could not correct a guest's room-related problem within 15 minutes. This was an early example of the brand attempting to attach a measurable service commitment to an economy proposition. The program presented operational responsiveness as part of value, rather than treating low price as the brand's only distinguishing feature. By 2004, ibis had 700 hotels in 36 countries. The chain entered South Korea, China and Thailand between 2003 and 2005. Further growth followed in the late 2000s. In 2009, ibis reported 100,000 rooms, opened its first Moscow property, reached 50 hotels in Brazil and opened its first hotel in Japan. In 2012, the largest ibis hotel in the Asia-Pacific region at that time opened in Bandung, Indonesia. The most important portfolio change came in September 2011. Accor converted All Seasons into ibis Styles and Etap Hôtel into ibis Budget. The move made ibis the umbrella identity for a group of economy-oriented propositions rather than only one hotel format. Standard ibis remained the principal network, ibis Styles added a design-oriented positioning and ibis Budget served a more basic value segment. Accor also cited improvements to mattresses, pillows and digital access as part of the repositioning. By 2013, the combined ibis family was described as Europe's largest hotel operator by hotel count, with 1,277 hotels. The core brand reached its 1,000th hotel in January 2014. ibis also pursued brand-building projects beyond conventional hotel operations. In September 2012, it tested Sleep Art, a robotic system that used a sleeper's movements, sounds and heat variations to create a painting. The experiment was later made available to customers through a mobile application, linking the brand to digital creativity and sleep-related guest experience. ibis continues to operate within Accor's global brand portfolio. Its properties serve short-stay leisure and business demand in cities, transport corridors and other accessible locations. The brand's international identity rests on standardized essentials, broad distribution and a relatively accessible price proposition. The related ibis Styles and ibis Budget networks are strategically connected to ibis but remain distinct brands. The cited reference reports that the standard ibis network, excluding those two sister brands, comprised 1,242 hotels and 154,177 rooms at 31 December 2025.
