Overview
Warner Music Africa (WMA) is the African operating and brand platform of Warner Music Group, a global recorded-music company. Its principal base is in Johannesburg, South Africa, where the business develops artists, markets releases, manages distribution, and connects African repertoire with Warner Music's international network. The operation has roots in Warner Music South Africa and in the earlier Warner Music Gallo Africa joint venture, linking Warner's global infrastructure with the catalogue and market presence of South African independent label Gallo Records. Warner Music South Africa was established on 5 December 2013 after Warner Music Group bought Gallo Records' interest in Warner Music Gallo Africa. The change gave Warner direct control of the South African operation and created a platform for expansion across the continent. Tracy Fraser, who had previously served as general manager of Warner Music Gallo Africa, became the new business's managing director. During her tenure, the company was associated with artist signings and partnerships involving artists including Josh Kempen, Locnville, Mango Groove, Janie Bay, Dr Bone, Zahara, Julanie J, Masandi, Faith K, CKay, and Diamond Platnumz. Fraser left the managing-director role in 2021. On 22 March 2021, Warner Music appointed Temi Adeniji as managing director of Warner Music South Africa and senior vice-president of strategy for Sub-Saharan Africa. Her remit reflected a broader regional ambition rather than a purely South African label operation. The company became publicly known as Warner Music Africa before May 2022, with the rebrand formally presented at a Johannesburg launch on 11 May 2022. The new identity emphasized the company's role in developing artists and repertoire across multiple African markets. WMA has expanded beyond conventional label services. In June 2022 it introduced a brand-strategy division led by entertainment lawyer Thembi Mpungose-Niklas. The division was intended to support wider commercial and cultural opportunities around artists and music. WMA also participates in Warner Music Group's partnerships with independent African labels and artists. In May 2022, Warner Music announced a 360 partnership with Tanzanian artist Diamond Platnumz and his label WCB Wasafi, with the arrangement involving Warner Music South Africa and Ziiki Media. In July 2023, WMA partnered with Lacuna Creative Studios on post-production for a six-part documentary about the making of the Ukhamba album by Sjava and Big Zulu under the Inkabi Zezwe project. The company has also developed social-impact and ecosystem initiatives. In 2022, Warner Music Group, the Blavatnik Family Foundation, and the Social Justice Fund launched the SJF Repertoire Fund, an eight-year, $10 million initiative. Warner Music Africa received a $1 million allocation for Sub-Saharan Africa, with grants directed to organizations in countries including Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. The listed grantee partners worked across education, arts, technology, justice, agriculture, and youth development. On 20 May 2024, WMA established a creative hub in Lagos, Nigeria. The hub was designed to increase Warner Music's A&R, operations, and marketing capabilities in Nigeria and to support the country's creative ecosystem. On 25 October 2024, Warner Music Group announced WM Africa Francophone, a collaboration among Warner Music Africa, Africori, and Warner Music France serving France and French-speaking Sub-Saharan Africa. The initiative combines A&R, digital, and marketing resources and is intended to improve artist discovery, development, and cross-border collaboration. WMA therefore operates as both a regional label business and a bridge between African music markets and Warner Music's global infrastructure.
History
Warner Music Africa developed from Warner Music Group's South African activities and its former partnership with Gallo Records. In 2006, Johnnic Communications, the parent company of Gallo Records, entered a joint venture with Warner Music's South African division. The venture operated as Warner Music Gallo Africa and combined Warner's international label infrastructure with Gallo's important South African catalogue. In November 2007, Johnnic Communications changed its name to Avusa. One consequence of the joint venture was the digital availability of Gallo's archive, including recordings associated with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Letta Mbulu, Spokes Mashiyane, Lucky Dube, and Yvonne Chaka Chaka. The joint venture ended in December 2013. On 5 December 2013, Warner Music South Africa was established after Warner Music Group bought Gallo Records' share of the joint venture. Tracy Fraser, previously general manager of Warner Music Gallo Africa, became managing director. The new Warner operation focused on artist development, marketing, and distribution, while using its South African base to participate in a wider African music market. During Fraser's tenure, the business was connected with signings and artist-development work involving Josh Kempen, Locnville, Mango Groove, Janie Bay, Dr Bone, Zahara, Julanie J, Masandi, Faith K, CKay, and Diamond Platnumz. Fraser left the managing-director position in 2021. On 22 March 2021, Temi Adeniji was appointed managing director of Warner Music South Africa and senior vice-president of strategy for Sub-Saharan Africa. Her responsibilities covered both the local company and regional strategy. The company was publicly reintroduced as Warner Music Africa before May 2022, with the new name presented at an event in Warner's Hyde Park offices on 11 May 2022. Under the broader WMA identity, the operation emphasized pan-African repertoire, regional artist development, and the movement of African music through Warner Music's global network. WMA broadened its commercial and creative activity in 2022. On 23 June it launched a brand-strategy division led by Thembi Mpungose-Niklas, who reported to Adeniji. In the same period, Warner Music Group announced a 360 partnership with Diamond Platnumz and WCB Wasafi. The agreement connected the Tanzanian artist and label with Warner Music South Africa and Ziiki Media. WMA also took part in the SJF Repertoire Fund, an initiative announced in July 2022 by Warner Music Group, the Blavatnik Family Foundation, and the Social Justice Fund. The eight-year program was described as a $10 million effort, with WMA receiving a $1 million Sub-Saharan African allocation. Its first grantee group included organizations in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, working in fields such as education, arts, technology, justice, agriculture, and youth development. In July 2023, WMA partnered with Lacuna Creative Studios on post-production for a six-part documentary covering the creation of the Ukhamba studio album by Sjava and Big Zulu through the Inkabi Zezwe project. In May 2024, WMA established a creative hub in Lagos to provide more A&R, operations, and marketing expertise to Nigeria's creative sector. The initiative aimed to strengthen local infrastructure while helping African artists reach international audiences. On 25 October 2024, Warner Music Group announced WM Africa Francophone, a collaboration between Warner Music Africa, Africori, and Warner Music France. The venture operates across France and French-speaking Sub-Saharan Africa and combines the participants' A&R, digital, and marketing capabilities. Led by Marc-André Niang and Yoann Chapalain, it is intended to improve artist discovery, development, and cross-cultural collaboration. WMA's evolution consequently spans a South African joint-venture legacy, a major-label operating company, and a broader network supporting African music markets in both anglophone and francophone regions.
