Overview
Atlantic Music Group is an umbrella record-label group owned by Warner Music Group. Formerly known as Atlantic Records Group, it was renamed Atlantic Music Group in 2024 as Warner reorganized its label operations around Atlantic Records, 300 Entertainment, and 10K Projects. The group is distinct from Atlantic Records itself: Atlantic Records is its principal label, while Atlantic Music Group is the broader corporate and operational grouping. The group's modern structure developed from the consolidation of Atlantic Records and Elektra Records after Warner Music was sold by Time Warner to private investors in 2004. The combination created a larger label organization and placed much of Elektra's roster within Atlantic's operations. Over subsequent years, the group expanded its network through labels and imprints such as Roadrunner Records, Fueled by Ramen, Custard Records, Maybach Music Group, Big Beat Records, and other affiliated operations. Elektra was revived as an active brand in 2009, while Big Beat was also relaunched after a period of inactivity. In 2018, Warner Music announced that Elektra would again operate as a separately managed primary label through the creation of Elektra Music Group. The change transferred several labels, staff, and artists away from Atlantic Records Group, restoring a more distinct Warner-Elektra-Atlantic organizational arrangement. Atlantic nevertheless continued to operate a broad group of labels, imprints, and distribution relationships. Atlantic also reactivated Atco Records in 2020 under Atlantic's A&R organization. This returned the historic Atco name to active operations under the Atlantic umbrella after more than two decades of limited activity. In 2024, Elliot Grainge became chief executive officer and Atlantic Records Group adopted the Atlantic Music Group name. The same reorganization dissolved 300 Elektra Entertainment as a combined structure, while its constituent imprints remained associated with Atlantic Records or related operations. The group operates across recorded-music activities including artist signing and development, A&R, marketing, publicity, promotion, distribution, and exploitation of recorded-music catalogs. Its roster spans mainstream popular music, hip-hop, rock, alternative, electronic, and other contemporary genres. The group has been described as representing nearly 300 artists, although its roster changes over time. Its international footprint includes Atlantic-branded operations and copyright-holder entities in markets such as the United Kingdom and France.
History
Atlantic Music Group is the current name of the Warner Music Group label organization formerly called Atlantic Records Group. Its institutional history is tied to the Atlantic Records and Elektra Records businesses and to Warner Music's wider restructuring after the 2004 sale of Warner Music by Time Warner to private investors. The new ownership pursued cost reductions and combined Atlantic Records with its sister label Elektra Records. The resulting Atlantic Records Group became the principal umbrella for the combined operation, while much of Elektra's active roster was absorbed into Atlantic's day-to-day structure. The group subsequently developed as a multi-label platform rather than a single-label company. Its associated operations included Roadrunner Records, Fueled by Ramen, Custard Records, Maybach Music Group, and other imprints and label relationships. Elektra was reactivated as an Atlantic group brand in 2009, and Big Beat Records, an Atlantic dance and hip-hop imprint that had been inactive since the late 1990s, was also brought back. These moves allowed Warner to retain specialized identities while coordinating their distribution, marketing, and corporate support through the Atlantic organization. A major structural change came in June 2018, when Warner Music announced the formation of Elektra Music Group as a separately managed primary label. The new organization began operating in October of that year and took Elektra Records and several other labels, employees, and artists that had previously been part of the Atlantic group. The separation re-established a clearer distinction among Warner's major label brands, although Elektra's senior leadership continued to have a reporting relationship to Atlantic's leadership during the transition. Atlantic continued to use historic Warner labels and catalogs as part of its portfolio. In 2020, Atlantic Records announced the reactivation of Atco Records under A&R president Pete Ganbarg. The relaunch was significant because Atco had not been actively operated under the Atlantic umbrella for more than 25 years. The move illustrated the group's practice of reviving established label names while applying them to contemporary artist development and release strategies. The organization entered another phase in 2024. Elliot Grainge became chief executive officer, Atlantic Records Group was renamed Atlantic Music Group, and the group was reorganized around three principal labels or label businesses: Atlantic Records, 300 Entertainment, and 10K Projects. The 300 Elektra Entertainment structure was dissolved, but individual imprints associated with it remained under Atlantic Records or related operations. The present-day group therefore combines a flagship major label with boutique and genre-oriented operations, distribution arrangements, and imprints. Atlantic Music Group's business covers the development and commercialization of recorded music. Its activities include artist and repertoire work, signing, recording-project coordination, digital and physical distribution, marketing, publicity, promotion, licensing, and catalog management. It operates in a global music market through Warner Music's distribution and international infrastructure, with Atlantic-branded operations documented in the United Kingdom and France. The group's roster has been described as approaching 300 artists, though the number and composition of the roster change as artists sign, depart, or move between affiliated labels.
