Overview
Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) is Toyota's principal operating company for the Philippine automotive market. Based in Santa Rosa, Laguna, it distributes Toyota vehicles through a nationwide dealer network, assembles selected models locally, supplies parts and after-sales support, and coordinates related automotive services. Its activities also extend to Toyota Financial Services Philippines and Lexus Manila, the authorized Philippine distributor for Lexus vehicles. Toyota's first substantial presence in the Philippines predates TMP. In 1962, Delta Motor Corporation, founded by Ricardo C. Silverio Sr., obtained the rights to assemble and distribute Toyota vehicles in the country. Delta operated Toyota assembly and distribution activities for more than two decades, but its business deteriorated during the economic and political difficulties of the late Marcos era. Operations stopped in December 1983, and Toyota ended its relationship with Delta in March 1984. Delta was ultimately dissolved before the creation of a new Toyota-backed Philippine operation. Toyota Motor Corporation subsequently sought a new local partner. On August 3, 1988, TMP was incorporated as a joint venture involving Toyota Motor Corporation, Mitsui & Co., and the Metrobank group associated with George S. K. Ty and GT Capital. Masao Mitake became the company's first president. Vehicle sales restarted in 1989 through four dealerships, giving Toyota a new commercial platform in the Philippines while retaining local assembly capability. TMP developed from a relatively small distributor into one of the country's dominant automotive companies. Its model range has included passenger cars, multipurpose vehicles, pickup trucks, sport-utility vehicles, vans, buses, performance cars, and, more recently, electrified vehicles. Locally assembled products have included the Corolla, Corona, Crown, Tamaraw FX, Revo, Camry, Vios, Innova, Hilux, Fortuner, and the newer Tamaraw. Imported products broaden the portfolio with models such as the Yaris Cross, Corolla Cross, RAV4, Land Cruiser, HiAce, Alphard, GR performance vehicles, and Toyota's bZ4X battery-electric model. The company expanded production infrastructure in Laguna during the 1990s. Its Santa Rosa Assembly Plant opened in April 1997, initially complementing the older Bicutan facility. In 2003, the Santa Rosa Industrial Complex received economic-zone certification from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority. Bicutan production ended in 2005, after which assembly was consolidated in Santa Rosa. The Santa Rosa site became the core of TMP's manufacturing footprint and is located within the 82-hectare Toyota Special Economic Zone. TMP achieved a major commercial milestone in 1994 when it won its first Philippine automotive "Triple Crown," leading the market in total vehicle sales, passenger-car sales, and commercial-vehicle sales. The company reported 19 consecutive Triple Crown achievements through 2019, reflecting the strength of Toyota's dealer coverage and its broad mix of cars, light commercial vehicles, pickups, and utility vehicles. In 2007, TMP sold its 500,000th vehicle in the Philippines. In 2021, the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry awarded the company the Philippine Quality Award for Performance Excellence based on its 2019 performance. TMP was described as only the second recipient in the award's history at that time, following Unilab. The recognition emphasized organizational systems and management performance rather than a single vehicle or marketing campaign. For its 35th anniversary, Toyota announced the return of the Tamaraw nameplate to the Philippine market and committed to local production at the Santa Rosa plant beginning in 2024. The initiative connected a historically important Philippine Toyota name with a modern commercial vehicle intended for practical and business use. Today, TMP remains an active Toyota operating company focused on Philippine vehicle sales, local…
History
Toyota's Philippine history began in 1962, when Delta Motor Corporation obtained Toyota assembly and distribution rights. Delta was founded by Ricardo C. Silverio Sr. and operated Toyota-related production and sales for over two decades. Economic and political turmoil weakened the company, leading to the suspension of operations in December 1983 and the termination of its Toyota relationship in March 1984. Delta was dissolved by 1988. Toyota Motor Corporation then pursued a new Philippine partnership. TMP was incorporated on August 3, 1988, as a joint venture involving Toyota, Mitsui & Co., and the Metrobank group associated with George S. K. Ty and GT Capital. Masao Mitake served as its first president. Toyota sales resumed in 1989 through four dealerships, re-establishing the brand in the local market. TMP expanded its local industrial base through the former Bicutan facility and the new Santa Rosa Assembly Plant, which opened in April 1997. The Santa Rosa Industrial Complex was certified as an economic zone in 2003. In 2005, the Bicutan plant closed and production was consolidated in Santa Rosa, Laguna. The company identifies the Santa Rosa site, within the Toyota Special Economic Zone, as its principal assembly location. The company achieved its first Triple Crown in 1994 by leading total, passenger-car, and commercial-vehicle sales. It continued to record this combined market leadership for many years, with 19 consecutive Triple Crown achievements reported through 2019. In October 2007, TMP reached the milestone of selling its 500,000th vehicle. TMP's business has broadened beyond vehicle distribution. It operates or provides access to Toyota Financial Services Philippines and is connected with Lexus Manila, the official Lexus distributor in the Philippines. Its product history covers locally assembled sedans, utility vehicles, pickups, vans, and multipurpose vehicles, alongside imported Toyota cars, SUVs, commercial vehicles, and performance models. In 2021, the Department of Trade and Industry granted TMP the Philippine Quality Award for Performance Excellence, recognizing the company's management systems and organizational results. For the company's 35th anniversary, Toyota announced the return of the Tamaraw nameplate, with local production planned at Santa Rosa beginning in 2024. This announcement reinforced TMP's continuing role as both a distributor and a local vehicle assembler.
