Overview
Toyota Motor East Japan is a manufacturing subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation established on 1 July 2012 through the merger of Central Motors, Kanto Auto Works, and Toyota Motors Tohoku. The company was created as part of Toyota's post-Tōhoku earthquake reorganization, which sought to establish a stronger production base in northeastern Japan alongside Toyota's existing Chubu and Kyushu production centers. Its headquarters are in Miyagi Prefecture, and its principal manufacturing operations are located at the Miyagi Ohira and Iwate plants. The company specializes in the development and manufacture of compact and subcompact automobiles, engines, and other automotive components. It has also produced selected specialty vehicles and equipment, including the Toyota JPN Taxi, wheelchairs, and car lifters. Its role within the Toyota production system has been particularly important for smaller vehicles sold in Japan, where manufacturing flexibility, cost control, and regional supply-chain resilience are central concerns. Toyota Motor East Japan began vehicle production soon after its creation. In August 2012, its Higashi-Fuji plant began assembling the second-generation Toyota Porte and the Toyota Spade, taking over production that had previously been performed by Daihatsu. The company subsequently expanded its compact-car responsibilities. Production of the second-generation Sienta began in 2015, while the Iwate plant began producing the Toyota C-HR in December 2016. In 2015 Toyota also began transferring Vitz production from Toyota Industries to Iwate, a process completed in 2018. The transfer was intended to consolidate compact and subcompact assembly in northeastern Japan and improve efficiency. The company has also been associated with important Japanese-market nameplates. In 2017 it began building the new Toyota JPN Taxi, a purpose-designed taxi based on the second-generation Sienta and intended to replace the Toyota Comfort. The Higashi-Fuji plant produced the second-generation Toyota Century until early 2017 and began producing the third-generation Century in 2018. These programs demonstrated that the subsidiary's activities extended beyond mainstream compact cars into specialist and premium vehicles. Toyota Motor East Japan restructured its manufacturing footprint in the late 2010s and early 2020s. Toyota announced the closure of the Higashi-Fuji vehicle assembly operation and the transfer of production to other Toyota Motor East Japan facilities or Toyota Group plants. Higashi-Fuji ended automobile assembly on 10 December 2020 and closed at the end of that month, although its technical center continued operating. Porte and Spade production ended, JPN Taxi production moved to Miyagi, and Century production moved to Toyota's Motomachi plant. The remaining operations continued to evolve. Iwate began assembling the Toyota Yaris in 2020 after the Vitz name was retired, and Toyota Motor East Japan added Yaris Cross production at Miyagi and Iwate. The second-generation Aqua began production at Iwate in 2021, followed by the third-generation Sienta at Miyagi in 2022. In 2023 Toyota announced that Iwate would produce the Lexus LBX, marking the company's first Lexus-badged vehicle; production began in December 2023. Toyota Motor East Japan also operates overseas bases in Brazil and Thailand. Its manufacturing and technical activities remain integrated into Toyota's wider production network rather than being marketed as a separate consumer-facing vehicle brand.
History
Toyota Motor East Japan was formed on 1 July 2012 when Toyota Motors Tohoku, Kanto Auto Works, and Central Motors were combined. The merger followed Toyota's effort to reorganize production after the Tōhoku earthquake and to establish a more coherent manufacturing center in northeastern Japan. Toyota described the regional operation as part of a broader production structure alongside its Chubu and Kyushu centers. The new subsidiary inherited manufacturing facilities, employees, engineering capabilities, and vehicle programs from the three predecessor companies. From its beginning, Toyota Motor East Japan was assigned a strong focus on compact automobiles, engines, and components. Its Higashi-Fuji plant started assembling the second-generation Porte and Spade in August 2012, replacing Daihatsu as the assembler of those Japanese-market models. The company later assumed an expanding role in Toyota's compact-car network. Second-generation Sienta production began in 2015, and the Iwate plant started making the C-HR in December 2016. Toyota also transferred Vitz production from Toyota Industries to Iwate beginning in 2015, completing the move in October 2018. The objective was to consolidate compact and subcompact assembly in the northeastern region and reduce production costs. The subsidiary also produced vehicles serving specialized domestic requirements. In November 2017, Higashi-Fuji began assembling the new JPN Taxi, which was based on the second-generation Sienta and designed to replace the Toyota Comfort taxi. The same facility had produced the Comfort from 1995 and had also assembled the second-generation Century until production ended in January 2017. Higashi-Fuji began building the third-generation Century in 2018, giving the plant responsibility for both a mass-market taxi and a high-profile premium sedan. Toyota Motor East Japan subsequently undertook a substantial restructuring of its manufacturing footprint. In 2018 it announced plans to relocate production and employees among its facilities and later confirmed that Higashi-Fuji vehicle assembly would close by 2020. JPN Taxi and Porte production were transferred to other Toyota Motor East Japan plants, while other programs moved to Toyota Group facilities. Higashi-Fuji ended automobile assembly on 10 December 2020 and closed at the end of that month; its technical center remained in operation. Porte and Spade production ended, JPN Taxi moved to Miyagi, and Century production moved to Toyota's Motomachi plant. The company continued building its compact-vehicle and hybrid portfolio after the closure. Iwate began producing the Yaris in 2020 as the Vitz name was replaced, while Yaris Cross assembly was introduced at Miyagi and later at Iwate. The second-generation Aqua entered production at Iwate in 2021, followed by the third-generation Sienta at Miyagi in 2022. Toyota Motor East Japan announced in 2023 that Iwate would assemble the Lexus LBX, making it the company's first Lexus-badged vehicle; production started in December of that year. Cost and productivity were continuing concerns for the subsidiary because Toyota's small-car operations faced lower profitability than comparable Daihatsu operations, partly due to development times and production costs. Toyota Motor East Japan therefore sent employees to Daihatsu for two-year periods to study the sister company's operating methods. The company began introducing the acquired practices from late 2022. In addition to its Japanese plants at Miyagi Ohira and Iwate, Toyota Motor East Japan has overseas bases in Brazil and Thailand. It also maintains a company baseball team that originated with the Kanto Auto Works team and entered the main national Intercity baseball tournament for the first time in 2018.
