Overview
Lexus is the luxury-vehicle division and premium automotive brand of Toyota Motor Corporation. It was created for international markets and launched in the United States in 1989 with the LS 400 flagship sedan and ES 250 sedan. The brand emerged from Toyota's F1, or Flagship One, project, initiated in 1983 after chairman Eiji Toyoda challenged the company to develop a world-class premium automobile. Rather than simply adding a more expensive Toyota model, Toyota developed a separate identity, dealership network, engineering program, and customer-service experience intended to compete with established European and American luxury marques. The first-generation LS 400 became the defining Lexus product. Its rear-wheel-drive layout, newly developed V8 engine, low cabin noise, careful assembly, and relatively competitive pricing helped establish Lexus quickly in North America. The brand also became known for an unusually responsive ownership experience. In its first year, Lexus conducted a voluntary recall of early LS 400 vehicles and arranged collection, repair, and return of affected cars, an episode that reinforced its emphasis on customer care. During the 1990s, Lexus broadened its range from large sedans into coupes, sports sedans, and sport-utility vehicles. The SC 400, GS, LX, and ES expanded the brand's reach, while the RX 300, introduced in 1998, helped define the luxury crossover category and eventually became Lexus's highest-volume product line. Lexus entered additional international markets throughout this period, although the brand was not introduced in Japan until 2005. Before that domestic launch, vehicles sold internationally as Lexus were generally marketed in Japan under Toyota badges and model names. The 2000s brought organizational separation from Toyota, greater investment in dedicated Lexus design, engineering, manufacturing, training, and retail operations, and a more coordinated global model strategy. Lexus became an early leader in premium hybrid vehicles with the RX 400h, launched in 2005, and subsequently expanded electrified powertrains across sedans, crossovers, SUVs, and later performance-oriented models. The F performance marque appeared with the IS F in 2007, followed by the limited-production LFA supercar in 2009. Lexus's current portfolio spans compact and midsize crossovers, large SUVs, sedans, coupes, convertibles, performance models, and battery-electric vehicles. Important nameplates include the ES, LS, IS, RC, LC, UX, NX, RX, GX, LX, RZ, and LM. Its vehicles are produced primarily in Japan, with additional production history in North America, including RX assembly in Canada. The brand is marketed in more than 90 countries and territories. Since 2024, its headquarters has been located in Shimoyama, Aichi, while operational centers remain in Brussels and Plano, Texas. Lexus positions itself as a premium alternative combining Japanese manufacturing discipline with hospitality, design, comfort, electrification, and increasingly distinctive styling.
History
Lexus originated in Toyota's effort to create a premium automobile for international markets. In 1983, Toyota chairman Eiji Toyoda authorized the F1 project, whose objective was to produce a flagship sedan capable of challenging Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Cadillac, and other established luxury brands. Toyota conducted consumer research in the United States, including observation of affluent consumers and extensive road testing in North America and Europe. The company concluded that a separate marque and retail channel were necessary because a luxury product would require a different identity and customer experience from ordinary Toyota vehicles. The resulting LS 400 debuted in 1989 with a new V8 engine, rear-wheel drive, aerodynamic bodywork, and an exceptionally quiet cabin. It was sold in the United States alongside the smaller ES 250 through 81 dedicated dealerships. Lexus entered the market with a large marketing campaign and a proposition that combined luxury equipment with a lower price than comparable German products. Reviews praised its refinement, engineering quality, ride, and value. A voluntary recall later in 1989, handled through an elaborate collection and repair process, helped establish the service standards for which the brand became known. Lexus expanded rapidly in the 1990s. The SC 400 added a V8-powered coupe, the ES became a major sales pillar, and the GS introduced a sportier midsize sedan. The LX 450 gave the brand an off-road-oriented SUV, while the RX 300, introduced in 1998, created a more urban and comfort-focused crossover offering. Lexus also introduced a certified pre-owned program and expanded beyond the United States into markets including Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Brazil, and other territories. By the end of the decade, it had become a major premium import brand in the United States. The early 2000s were marked by range expansion and electrification. Lexus added the GX SUV, new generations of the RX and LS, and its first convertible, the SC 430. In 2005, the RX 400h became a landmark product as one of the earliest luxury hybrid SUVs. That same year, Toyota completed a broad organizational separation that gave Lexus dedicated design, engineering, manufacturing, training, and retail capabilities. Lexus also launched in Japan in 2005, replacing the previous practice of selling equivalent vehicles domestically under Toyota names. The F performance division began with the IS F in 2007. The LFA, introduced in 2009, demonstrated Lexus's ambitions in high-performance engineering and used advanced materials and construction techniques. During the following years, Lexus continued to develop the F Sport sub-brand, the RC and LC coupes, and increasingly expressive exterior design. Hybrid powertrains became central to the range, appearing in models such as the GS, IS, NX, RX, LS, and LC. Lexus has continued global expansion while retaining a manufacturing base concentrated in Japan, particularly in the Chubu and Kyushu regions. The RX was also assembled in Canada, marking a significant step in overseas production. The brand now operates across more than 90 countries and territories and maintains operational centers in Brussels and Plano, Texas. In 2024, Lexus headquarters moved to Shimoyama in Aichi Prefecture. Its modern strategy combines hybridization and battery-electric vehicles with premium SUVs, sedans, performance products, and hospitality-led ownership experiences.
