Overview
Google Pixel is a consumer electronics brand created by Google and introduced in 2016 with the first Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. The brand replaced Google's earlier Nexus approach, under which Google specified products that were manufactured and sold in partnership with other companies. Pixel represented a more integrated hardware strategy: Google controlled the product identity, industrial design, software experience, camera processing, update policy, and increasingly the underlying silicon and artificial-intelligence features, while manufacturing remained dependent on external production partners. The central Pixel proposition is the combination of Android and Google's own software services. History
Google introduced the Pixel brand in 2016 as part of a shift from the Nexus program toward Google-controlled consumer hardware. The first Pixel and Pixel XL were positioned as Google-designed smartphones with a tightly integrated Android experience, direct software updates, and a camera system whose quality depended heavily on computational photography. HTC manufactured the first generation, but Google presented the products as its own hardware rather than as co-branded developer devices.
