Samsung Notebook 9

Samsung Notebook 9 was a family of premium notebook computers produced by Samsung Electronics from 2011 through the late 2010s. The range began as the Samsung Notebook Series 9, known as SENS Series 9 in South Korea, and was subsequently renamed ATIV Book 9 when Samsung reorganized its personal-computer branding in 2013. Later generations returned to the Samsung Notebook 9 name. The line was positioned around portability, thin construction, premium materials, bright high-resolution displays, and a design philosophy Samsung described as “Thin & Light.” The first Series 9 was introduced at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show. Its aerospace-grade duralumin enclosure, 16.3-millimetre thickness, low weight, solid-state storage, and second-generation Intel Core processor made it an early Samsung answer to the premium ultraportable market. The original family included a 13.3-inch model and, for a shorter period, an 11.6-inch version. Samsung later added a 15-inch model as demand favored larger screens. The initial design used a dark, brushed-metal appearance and a paper-like visual motif intended to communicate thinness. The 2012 generation refined the chassis and hinge design, moved to a single-shell aluminium construction, reduced thickness and weight, and raised the 13.3-inch display resolution to 1600 by 900 pixels. It was offered with solid-state storage capacities including 128 GB and 256 GB. Although its specifications fitted the emerging ultrabook category, Samsung did not consistently market the product using Intel’s Ultrabook name. In 2013 the family expanded substantially. The standard model gained a full-HD display and adopted the ATIV Book 9 designation. Samsung also introduced the ATIV Book 9 Plus, with a touchscreen and an unusually high-resolution 3200 by 1800 display, and the lower-cost ATIV Book 9 Lite, which used a plastic enclosure and an AMD processor. The Lite retained the visual identity of the premium models but was aimed at less demanding users such as people browsing the web, communicating by email, and using ordinary office applications. The 2014 models broadened the range further. The ATIV Book 9 2014 Edition used a 15.6-inch full-HD display, emphasized long battery life, and included support for high-resolution lossless audio through Samsung’s bundled S Player+ software. The ATIV Book 9 Style offered a more affordable plastic construction, a leather-like exterior treatment, and stronger built-in speakers. Samsung also promoted features such as high-current USB charging, Bluetooth aptX support, Dolby virtual surround sound, and remote audio control. The 2015 ATIV Book 9 adopted a low-power Intel Core M processor and a fanless design. Its 12-inch display used a 2560 by 1600 resolution, while the compact chassis weighed approximately 2.06 pounds. From late 2015 onward, Samsung introduced higher-performance variants including the Book 9 Pro and Book 9 Spin. The Pro used a 4K display, while the Spin used a 360-degree hinge for convertible operation. Samsung returned to the Notebook 9 name for subsequent generations. The 2016 models used sixth-generation Intel Core processors and were offered in especially light 13.3-inch and 15-inch versions. Later editions used seventh- and eighth-generation Intel processors, optional Nvidia graphics in larger models, magnesium-aluminium construction, and, in Notebook 9 Pen versions, integrated S Pen support. The 2019 Notebook 9 Pen and Notebook 9 Pro were the final major iterations associated with the family. Samsung subsequently introduced the Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion, which served as successors to important parts of the Notebook 9 portfolio. The Notebook 9 therefore represents a discontinued Samsung laptop family rather than a current standalone product line.

The Samsung Notebook 9 lineage began on January 6, 2011, when Samsung presented the Notebook Series 9 at CES. The first 13.3-inch model used an aerospace-grade duralumin enclosure, a Sandy Bridge Intel Core i5 processor, a 128 GB solid-state drive, and a 1366 by 768 display. Its thinness and low weight were central to its identity, and the design received recognition at CES. Samsung subsequently tested an 11.6-inch model in South Korea and other markets, but the smaller format was discontinued after limited demand. A 15-inch version was introduced to address stronger interest in larger displays. The second generation appeared at CES in January 2012. Samsung reduced the 13.3-inch model’s thickness and weight, changed the body from duralumin to a single-shell aluminium construction, revised the hinge arrangement, and increased the display resolution to 1600 by 900. The 15-inch model followed in the same year, and Samsung also developed a magnesium-body version. These products emphasized premium construction and portability but were not branded as Intel Ultrabooks despite fitting many of that category’s characteristics. During 2013 Samsung reorganized its computer branding under the ATIV name. The Series 9 became ATIV Book 9, and the range received a full-HD standard model, the high-resolution touchscreen ATIV Book 9 Plus, and the less expensive ATIV Book 9 Lite. The Plus used a Haswell-generation Intel Core processor and a 3200 by 1800 display. Early software support meant that the display initially operated under advertised limitations with Windows 8, but Windows 8.1 enabled the intended higher resolution. The Lite used a plastic body and AMD A6-1450 APU, retaining the family’s thin styling while targeting casual users. Samsung’s 2014 products included the ATIV Book 9 2014 Edition and ATIV Book 9 Style. The former used a 15.6-inch full-HD display and was promoted for long battery operation and native high-resolution lossless audio playback. Samsung supplied dedicated S Player+ software to work around operating-system audio limitations. The Style used plastic rather than premium metal, added a textured exterior and more powerful speakers, and omitted the lossless-audio feature. Samsung also added connectivity and audio features across the 2014 range, including a high-current USB port, aptX Bluetooth support, Dolby virtual surround effects, and a remotely controllable audio port. The 2014 Edition was the last Book 9 generation released in Europe before Samsung announced its withdrawal from that laptop market. In January 2015, Samsung introduced a smaller and fanless ATIV Book 9 using Intel Core M. The 12-inch computer used a 2560 by 1600 display and a very light chassis. At the end of 2015 and into 2016, the family expanded with the Book 9 Pro and Book 9 Spin. The Pro targeted higher performance and included a 4K display, while the Spin used a 360-degree hinge for convertible use. Samsung also re-established the Notebook 9 name in later markets. The 2016 models used sixth-generation Intel Core processors and were offered in 13.3-inch and 15-inch versions, with the larger model adding USB-C connectivity. The 2017 generation adopted seventh-generation Intel Core processors. Samsung highlighted the exceptionally low weight of the 13-inch model, while the 15-inch model could be configured with Nvidia GTX 940MX graphics. The Notebook 9 Pro introduced S Pen support. In 2018, Samsung released Notebook 9 and Notebook 9 Pen models with eighth-generation Intel processors and a magnesium-aluminium alloy Samsung called Metal12. The 2019 Notebook 9 Pen continued in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, while a revised-aluminium Notebook 9 Pro also appeared. Samsung then shifted its premium Windows laptop strategy to the Galaxy Book family. Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion became the practical successors to the Notebook 9 Pen and Notebook 9 Pro, bringing the Notebook 9 series to an end.
