Overview

V2 Records is a record-label brand established in 1996 by Richard Branson, five years after he sold Virgin Records to EMI. The name V2 was commonly explained as an abbreviation of “Virgin 2,” reflecting Branson’s attempt to build a new music business after the sale of his earlier company. Although it was associated with Branson and the Virgin entrepreneurial network, V2 was structured differently from a conventional wholly owned Virgin subsidiary. Morgan Stanley held a 95 percent interest during the label’s early period, while Branson held the remaining 5 percent, and management included people connected with Branson’s broader business activities. The label’s first major signing was Stereophonics. V2 subsequently expanded by acquiring or incorporating specialist labels and catalogues, including Gee Street Records, Junior Boy’s Own, Blue Dog Records and Big Cat Records. It also distributed or marketed releases for independent labels such as Wichita Recordings, Fania, Luaka Bop, City Slang and Modular. This combination of artist signings, catalogue ownership and independent-label services gave V2 a position between a traditional major-label imprint and a large independent music company. V2 experienced financial difficulties in its early years and was reorganized, with Branson taking a more direct controlling role and repositioning the business. Its international network eventually included operations or offices across Europe, North America and Australia. The United States operation was distributed first through BMG and later through WEA after the formation of Sony BMG. V2’s US headquarters were located at 14 East 4th Street in Manhattan, a building with earlier connections to Island Records. In April 2005, V2 created Cooperative Music, a transnational marketing and distribution operation designed to represent independent labels rather than only individual artists. Cooperative Music provided coordinated release, marketing and distribution support across territories including the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Australia and Japan. The initiative strengthened V2’s role as an international services platform for independent music. In 2006, a substantial portion of the label’s catalogue, including recordings by Moby and The White Stripes, was made available through eMusic, highlighting V2’s early participation in digital distribution. Universal Music Group purchased V2 Music Group in August 2007 for a reported £7 million. Following the acquisition, Universal connected Cooperative Music with Fontana International, the international independent-distribution arm associated with Universal’s US operations. This arrangement was intended to help European independent labels reach the American market through Fontana’s marketing and distribution network. In 2013, the independent music company [PIAS] acquired Cooperative Music, including the V2 business, from Universal. V2 therefore operated for a period within the [PIAS] structure, while V2 Benelux had a separate trajectory after a 2007 management buyout by its local directors and distributor. Universal acquired a 49 percent stake in [PIAS] in November 2022, bringing V2 partly back under Universal ownership. In 2024, Universal acquired the remaining 51 percent of [PIAS] that it did not already own. The brand’s corporate status and regional operating arrangements have varied over time, but V2 remains principally associated with recorded-music releases, catalogue exploitation and independent-label services.

History

V2 Records was founded in 1996 by Richard Branson, five years after EMI purchased Virgin Records. The new company was conceived as a second music venture associated with Branson, with “V2” generally understood as a reference to “Virgin 2.” Its ownership and management structure differed from the original Virgin business: Morgan Stanley held a 95 percent position in the early company, while Branson held 5 percent. The business was led by managers connected with Branson’s wider commercial activities. The label’s initial artist signing was Stereophonics. V2 later broadened its presence in independent and alternative music by acquiring Gee Street Records, Junior Boy’s Own, Blue Dog Records and Big Cat Records. It also provided distribution or marketing support for outside labels, including Wichita Recordings, Fania, Luaka Bop, City Slang and Modular. This made the company both a label and a platform for independent catalogues. After encountering financial difficulties, V2 was reorganized. Branson assumed greater control and sought to rebuild the business around a more focused brand and international structure. The company operated across a number of territories, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and several European markets. In the United States, its releases were distributed through BMG and later WEA. The US headquarters were located at 14 East 4th Street in Manhattan, a site formerly associated with Island Records. V2’s international-services role expanded in April 2005 with the creation of Cooperative Music. Rather than signing individual artists in the traditional manner, Cooperative Music worked with independent labels and coordinated licensing, promotion and distribution across multiple territories. Its network covered European countries as well as Australia and Japan. In 2006, V2 placed much of its catalogue, including recordings by Moby and The White Stripes, on eMusic, an early digital service known for DRM-free downloads. Universal Music Group bought V2 Music Group in August 2007. Afterward, Universal connected the US independent-distribution operation Fontana International with London-based Cooperative Music. The arrangement was intended to give independent European labels supported by Cooperative Music better access to US marketing, promotion and distribution. Cooperative Music subsequently worked with artists and labels associated with acts including Fleet Foxes, Phoenix and The Black Keys. V2 North America followed a separate corporate path for a period. In 2006, Branson sold that operation to Sheridan Square Entertainment for a reported $15 million. Sheridan Square merged its Artemis Records label into V2 North America. In January 2007, the North American unit announced a restructuring focused on catalogue exploitation and digital distribution, leading to staff departures and the release of its active roster. In February 2007, V2 Benelux directors Chris Boog and Tom Willinck completed a management buyout with Bertus Distribution, part of the Artone Group. V2 Benelux consequently operated separately from the main V2 structure. In 2013, [PIAS] bought Cooperative Music, including V2, from Universal. Universal later acquired a 49 percent interest in [PIAS] in November 2022 and purchased the remaining 51 percent in 2024. These transactions returned the broader V2-related business to full Universal ownership, although regional branding and operating arrangements have changed over time.
