Overview
EMI Music Australia is the Australian recorded-music operation associated with the EMI name. Its origins date to 1925, when The Gramophone Company established a local Australian branch. The Australian business initially operated under the Gramophone Company name and used the His Master's Voice trademark, which had already appeared in Australia on imported recordings. Following the creation of EMI in 1931 through the combination of The Gramophone Company and other businesses, the Australian branch became part of the wider EMI network. The operation was incorporated as EMI (Australia) Pty Ltd in 1949 and was headquartered in Sydney. During the middle decades of the twentieth century, its house labels and extensive international catalog made it one of the dominant recorded-music businesses in Australia. By October 1951, its catalog reportedly contained more than 10,000 titles and represented a very large share of recorded music available in the country. The company also participated in local recording activity, including a 1952 announcement concerning recordings of major works by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. From 1979 to 1996, EMI Music Australia was part of Thorn EMI, the UK-based group formed through the combination of EMI and Thorn. It remained a major force in the Australian market through the late twentieth century and into the early twenty-first century, releasing and distributing recordings across popular music, rock, jazz, classical, dance, and compilation formats. Its Australian activities included both local repertoire and releases connected with EMI's international labels and catalogs. The business experienced changes in leadership during the 2000s and early 2010s. John O'Donnell led the Australian operation from 2002, Mark Poston was appointed its leader in 2008, and O'Donnell returned as managing director in 2012. In 2022, Mark Holland was appointed managing director. These appointments took place during a period of major restructuring in the global recorded-music industry. In 2012, Universal Music Group acquired EMI's recorded-music operations. In Australia, the EMI business was acquired through Universal Music Australia and subsequently operated as EMI Recorded Music Australia, an imprint of Universal Music Australia. The acquisition ended EMI's status as an independent major-label subsidiary while preserving the EMI name as a label and catalog identity. The Australian operation has continued to be associated with artists such as Alison Wonderland, Birds of Tokyo, Empire of the Sun, Gotye, Gretta Ray, Kate Miller-Heidke, Keith Urban, Meg Mac, Middle Kids, Missy Higgins, Paul Kelly, Telenova, The Avalanches, and Troye Sivan. Its historical roster and Australian distribution activities have also included internationally prominent acts such as The Beatles, Queen, Paul McCartney, Elton John, AC/DC, Metallica, Katy Perry, Sam Smith, and Norah Jones.
History
EMI Music Australia's history begins with the establishment of a local Australian branch of The Gramophone Company in 1925. The Gramophone Company was a major British record business whose His Master's Voice trademark had appeared in Australia since the 1910s through imported recordings. The new local operation used that identity and helped build a substantial domestic market for recordings by British and other international artists. In 1931, The Gramophone Company became part of the corporate combination that created EMI. The Australian business was consequently integrated into the emerging EMI international network, although the local operation continued to be associated with the Gramophone Company name for a period. Its catalog included popular, classical, jazz, dance, and orchestral recordings. According to historical accounts of the Australian recording industry, British artists and orchestras accounted for much of the jazz and dance repertoire released in Australia between the two world wars. The Australian branch was incorporated as EMI (Australia) Pty Ltd in 1949. Sydney served as its headquarters. The company grew into one of the country's leading recorded-music businesses, supported by its house labels, international licensing relationships, and extensive catalog. By October 1951, its catalog was reported to exceed 10,000 titles and to account for approximately 80 percent of recorded music in Australia. In January 1952, the company announced that it was recording major works by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, illustrating its involvement in Australian classical recording as well as in imported popular repertoire. The His Master's Voice mark remained important to the Australian business into the 1970s and 1980s, when changing label identities and corporate structures gradually became more prominent. From 1979 through 1996, EMI Music Australia was a subsidiary of Thorn EMI. After the end of the Thorn EMI period, the EMI brand continued as part of the broader EMI recorded-music organization. The Australian operation remained one of the country's largest major labels and worked across local signings, international releases, catalog exploitation, physical formats, and later digital distribution. Leadership changed several times during the 2000s. John O'Donnell was identified as the leader of EMI Music Australia in 2002, followed by Mark Poston in 2008. O'Donnell returned in 2012 as managing director. That same year, Universal Music Group acquired EMI's recorded-music operations. The Australian business was transferred to Universal Music Australia and ceased to be an independently owned EMI subsidiary, but the EMI identity was retained as a label and catalog imprint. The post-acquisition operation has continued to release and represent music by Australian and international artists. The associated roster has included local acts such as Alison Wonderland, Birds of Tokyo, Empire of the Sun, Gotye, Gretta Ray, Kate Miller-Heidke, Keith Urban, Meg Mac, Middle Kids, Missy Higgins, Paul Kelly, Telenova, The Avalanches, and Troye Sivan. Historical and distributed repertoire has included artists ranging from The Beatles, Queen, AC/DC, and Paul McCartney to Katy Perry, Metallica, Sam Smith, and Norah Jones. In 2022, Mark Holland was appointed managing director. The business is therefore best understood today as an Australian EMI-branded recorded-music operation within Universal Music Australia's corporate and distribution network.
