Overview

Nestlé is a Switzerland-based food and beverage group headquartered in Vevey. Its activities span coffee, nutrition and health science, infant nutrition, dairy products, confectionery, culinary foods, pet care and bottled water. The company’s history is commonly traced to the late nineteenth century, when Henri Nestlé developed and commercialized an infant-food product. It later expanded through the combination of businesses in dairy, chocolate, coffee and other food categories. Over time, brand development, research and product innovation, and acquisitions helped Nestlé build a diversified international portfolio. The exact product mix differs by market because the group combines global brands with products sold mainly in particular countries or regions. Coffee and nutrition are major areas of activity, while pet care is also an important part of the business. As a listed company, Nestlé operates through global research, supply-chain and distribution capabilities across a broad range of food and beverage categories.

History

Nestlé’s corporate history grew out of nineteenth-century European businesses in infant nutrition and dairy products. Henri Nestlé developed and commercialized an infant-food product in Switzerland under the Nestlé family name. At the same time, the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company developed businesses in condensed milk and dairy products. The two business lines were combined in the late nineteenth century, providing an important foundation for the modern group. During the twentieth century, Nestlé expanded beyond dairy and infant foods into chocolate, coffee, culinary products and other packaged foods. The development of instant coffee strengthened the company’s international consumer-brand presence, while confectionery brands such as KitKat became part of its global portfolio. The group subsequently entered additional food, beverage, nutrition and pet-care categories through research and development, brand building and acquisitions. In recent years, Nestlé has focused its portfolio on categories with scale and growth potential while continuing to operate major businesses in coffee, nutrition, pet care and water. Because the company combines global and local brands, its product mix and commercial priorities vary by market.

Nestlé recalls baby food batches in Europe over toxin contamination risk

Nestlé initiated a public recall of batches of baby food in several European countries as a precautionary measure after Austrian authorities detected small amounts of cereulide, a toxin causing food poisoning, in two batches. The company said the cause was a technical cleaning defect at a supplier that contaminated an ingredient in December. No illness cases have been reported.

Texas Attorney General sues Nestlé and Gerber over toxic heavy metals in baby food

The Texas Attorney General brought legal proceedings against Nestlé and its US subsidiary Gerber Products under the Texas Unfair Trade Practices Act, alleging the companies misled parents about toxic heavy metals in Gerber baby food. The suit alleges Gerber claimed its products were safe and rigorously tested while its own tests showed dangerous levels of arsenic and lead, including rice flour batches used between 2017 and 2019 with more than nine times the permitted arsenic concentration, carrots with up to 17 times the cadmium limit, and sweet potatoes with nearly 10 times the lead limit, and that Gerber issued no recalls or warnings after 2021 lab findings of excess arsenic in rice cereal.
