History

Lost Highway Records was formed in 2000 by Luke Lewis as a Nashville-based record-label imprint within the Universal Music Group system. Its name came from the Hank Williams song “Lost Highway,” signaling an emphasis on country music and the broader American roots tradition. From its beginning, however, the imprint was designed to operate beyond a narrow commercial-country formula. Its catalog included alternative country, Americana, folk, roots rock, and selected alternative rock projects. The label’s artist associations included Ryan Adams, Ryan Bingham, Hayes Carll, Elvis Costello, the Eagles, Bernard Fanning, Donavon Frankenreiter, Mary Gauthier, the Jayhawks, Shelby Lynne, Tift Merritt, Van Morrison, Morrissey, Willie Nelson, Fionn Regan, Ringo Starr, Whiskeytown, and Lucinda Williams. This range gave Lost Highway a distinctive identity inside a major music group: it could accommodate established legacy performers, critically respected singer-songwriters, and artists whose work moved between country, rock, folk, and Americana. Lost Highway also had an important distribution and soundtrack role. Its associated projects included the soundtrack for O Brother, Where Art Thou?, a film whose music drew heavily on American roots traditions, as well as soundtrack releases related to Deadwood and Open Season. The label also distributed albums by Johnny Cash and Lyle Lovett. These activities broadened the imprint’s commercial function from signing and releasing artists to handling specialized roots-music and catalog projects. The label became dormant in 2012 after Luke Lewis retired. The cessation of active operations did not eliminate the catalog, which remained connected to Universal Music Group and could continue to be distributed, reissued, or exploited through the group’s broader systems. No separate public financial reporting is identified for Lost Highway as an individual imprint. In 2025, Interscope Records revived Lost Highway Records. The revived imprint operates in conjunction with Interscope Capitol Labels Group, linking the historical Nashville and Americana identity with a current major-label platform. The revival represents a return to active brand use after more than a decade of dormancy. Its historical significance rests on its combination of country and roots credibility, cross-genre artist development, soundtrack distribution, and access to the resources of a major music group.
