Overview
Dior Homme is the historical name of the men's fashion division of Christian Dior. The line originated as Christian Dior Monsieur in 1969 under Marc Bohan, then underwent a major repositioning when Hedi Slimane renamed it Dior Homme for the autumn/winter 2001–02 season. Slimane's work established a sharply tailored, narrow silhouette that became one of the most influential menswear looks of the early 2000s. His collections combined severe tailoring, dark palettes, elongated proportions, denim, rock and roll references, and an exploration of masculinity that helped make Dior a central force in contemporary men's fashion. After Slimane left in 2007, Kris Van Assche directed the line and gradually moved it toward a more formal, detailed, and wearable interpretation. He retained elements of the established slim profile while introducing softer tailoring, more varied colors, athletic casting, and shades of black, gray, blue, and brown. The division also expanded beyond clothing: a six-piece men's skincare range was introduced in late 2007, and Dior continued to develop accessories and other lifestyle products around the men's fashion proposition. Kim Jones led Dior's men's collections from 2018 through 2025. During his tenure the business adopted the name Dior Men in March 2018, while continuing the house's emphasis on tailoring, luxury ready-to-wear, footwear, accessories, and collaborations. Jones's period included a men's ski capsule created with Descente, AK Skis, and POC in 2020, and a dedicated denim capsule in 2023. Dior's men’s advertising has featured internationally known figures including Robert Pattinson, Kylian Mbappé, Raphaël Quenard, and Louis Garrel, supported by campaigns produced with prominent fashion photographers. On April 17, 2025, Dior announced Jonathan Anderson as creative director of Dior Men after his departure from Loewe. On June 2, 2025, LVMH stated that Anderson would also oversee Dior womenswear and haute couture, giving him responsibility across the house's principal creative categories. Accordingly, Dior Homme is best understood as the historical and still widely used name for Dior's men's division, while Dior Men is the current operating label. The division serves an international luxury market through Dior boutiques, department stores, selected retail partners, and digital channels. Japan is one of the markets in which Dior men's products are sold, but the brand is French in origin and is not a Japan-specific label.
History
Dior's men's business began in 1969 as Christian Dior Monsieur, established under Marc Bohan, who was then the creative director responsible for Dior's women's and haute couture activities. The line gave the French fashion house a dedicated menswear identity while remaining connected to Dior's broader couture heritage. A decisive transformation came under Hedi Slimane. In 2000 the division was renamed Dior Homme, with the new identity taking shape from the autumn/winter 2001–02 season. Slimane developed an unmistakably narrow and elongated silhouette, using close-fitting tailoring and a predominantly dark visual language. The collections addressed questions of male identity and sexuality while drawing on youth culture, music, and the visual codes of rock. This approach became highly influential across menswear and helped establish slim tailoring as a defining fashion proposition in the early twenty-first century. Dior introduced its first men's denim designs for spring 2003. Later work, including the Luster period and collections influenced by Berlin's electronic scene, expanded the line's cultural vocabulary. From autumn/winter 2004, rock and roll references became increasingly prominent. Slimane left Dior in 2007 and was succeeded by Kris Van Assche. Van Assche responded to the risk that the established Dior Homme silhouette might become overly rigid or imitative by making the collections more formal, minimal, and adaptable. He softened the black, narrow look, introduced more color, emphasized construction and detail, and used models with a more athletic appearance. Black, gray, blue, and brown remained important, but the overall proposition became less severe. The division also entered men's skincare in late 2007 with a six-product range whose packaging was designed by Slimane. The skincare products were distributed in France and through department stores in various other countries. Kim Jones became artistic director of Dior's men's collections in 2018. That year the division changed its name from Dior Homme to Dior Men, marking a new public-facing phase while preserving the historical importance of the former name. Jones's tenure combined Dior's tailoring and couture references with streetwear, accessories, sportswear, and collaborations. The division moved further into lifestyle and technical categories through a four-headphone collaboration with Sennheiser in 2017 and a ski capsule made with Descente, AK Skis, and POC in 2020. A dedicated denim capsule followed in 2023. Dior Men has used fashion photography and celebrity partnerships as important parts of its international communication. Campaign photographers associated with the line include Willy Vanderperre, Larry Clark, Karl Lagerfeld, David Sims, Patrick Demarchelier, Steven Meisel, Alasdair McLellan, and Pieter Hugo. Campaign faces have included Lucas Hedges, Robert Pattinson, Kylian Mbappé, Raphaël Quenard, and Louis Garrel. On April 17, 2025, Dior named Jonathan Anderson creative director of Dior Men after his time at Loewe. On June 2, 2025, LVMH announced that Anderson would also direct Dior's womenswear and haute couture, extending his role across the house. Dior Homme therefore remains the historical name associated especially with the Slimane era and early-2000s menswear, while Dior Men is the current name of the active men's division. The business operates internationally as part of Christian Dior and the LVMH luxury group.
