Overview

Cheil Worldwide is a South Korean marketing and communications company headquartered in Seoul and affiliated with Samsung Group. Established in 1973 by Samsung founder Lee Byung-chul under the name Cheil Communications, it began as an advertising organization supporting the development of Samsung and the wider Korean consumer market. Over time, it expanded from conventional advertising into a broad range of marketing disciplines, including brand strategy, creative development, digital marketing, media, public relations, shopper marketing, sports marketing, retail experiences, data analytics, and technology-enabled customer experiences. The company became one of the earliest Korean agencies to pursue international expansion. It opened an office in Tokyo in 1988 and established Cheil USA in 1992. It subsequently formed or participated in international partnerships, including a joint venture with Bozell in 1989 and Hakuhodo-Cheil in 1999. In 2008, the company adopted the name Cheil Worldwide, reflecting its international scope. Its overseas growth strategy later included investments and acquisitions in specialist agencies, particularly in digital, creative, shopper, and experiential marketing. Transactions and investments referenced in the company's history include Beattie McGuinness Bungay in the United Kingdom, The Barbarian Group in the United States, McKinney, Bravo Asia, iris worldwide, Founded, and the Chinese social-media analytics company ColourData. Cheil's business is closely associated with Samsung, for which it has handled campaigns and marketing work across multiple markets and product categories. However, its client base also includes international companies such as Adidas, Absolut, The Coca-Cola Company, General Motors, GE, The Lego Group, Microsoft, Nestlé, and Shell. Its agency network has used a combination of local offices, affiliates, and acquired specialist agencies to serve multinational clients while retaining market-specific capabilities. The company is known for work that combines advertising with retail and digital interaction. Examples cited in industry and company histories include Tesco Homeplus's virtual-store initiative in South Korea, Samsung-related accessibility and technology projects, the Bridge of Life public-service campaign, Look At Me, Blind Cap, adidas Glitch, and digital work produced by The Barbarian Group. The Barbarian Group's Cinder project, an open-source creative-coding framework developed for an interactive Samsung retail experience, illustrates Cheil's interest in connecting software, physical environments, and communications. Cheil has also used conferences and industry seminars to discuss mobile marketing, shopper marketing, social media, Korean pop culture, the Internet of Things, and experience-led communications. Its work has received recognition at Cannes Lions, Spikes Asia, the Clio Awards, the One Show, SXSW Interactive, Eurobest, the Shorty Awards, and other industry programs. In 2020, Cheil announced the acquisition of ColourData to strengthen its data-driven marketing capabilities in China. Cheil remains an active global agency network, with operations spanning multiple continents and a business model that combines Samsung-related work, external clients, owned or affiliated agencies, and specialized marketing services.

History

Cheil Worldwide was founded in South Korea in 1973 by Lee Byung-chul, the founder of Samsung Group. Its original name, Cheil Communications, reflected its initial role as an advertising and communications company serving the developing Samsung business and Korean consumer economy. In 1977, it conducted what is described in its historical record as Korea's first nationwide lifestyle surveys, an early indication of an interest in consumer research alongside creative advertising. The company began building an international network in the late twentieth century. It opened its first overseas branch in Tokyo in 1988 and established Cheil USA in 1992. In 1989, it formed a joint venture with Bozell, while in 1999 it established Hakuhodo-Cheil. These arrangements gave the company access to international agency expertise while helping it develop capabilities suited to Korean and Asian markets. During the 2000s, Cheil moved toward a broader global marketing-solutions model. It changed its corporate name to Cheil Worldwide in 2008, signaling that its ambitions extended beyond Korea. The company also began taking stakes in specialist agencies. It invested in London agency Beattie McGuinness Bungay in 2008 and acquired a majority interest in New York digital agency The Barbarian Group in 2009. The latter added technology and interactive expertise to Cheil's traditional creative and advertising operations. Further expansion followed in 2012, when Cheil acquired McKinney in the United States and Bravo Asia in China. In 2014, it announced an agreement to acquire a significant initial investment in iris worldwide, a British agency, with the possibility of increasing its ownership over time. In 2016, Cheil acquired Founded, a creative agency with offices in London and San Francisco. The network continued geographic expansion in Latin America with the opening of an office in Buenos Aires in January 2019. A company history published around that period described a network of 53 offices and nine affiliates across 44 countries. Cheil's service portfolio expanded alongside its geographic footprint. In addition to advertising, it developed practices in public relations, digital marketing, media, sports marketing, shopper marketing, retail design, experiential communications, and technology. Its work for Samsung and other clients frequently sought to turn products, stores, and public spaces into interactive experiences. The Barbarian Group's Cinder framework, created for a Samsung Centerstage retail installation, is an example of this approach: it used creative coding to connect visitors with Samsung appliances and later became an open-source project. The network's campaigns received international attention. Tesco Homeplus's virtual-store work won major awards at Cannes Lions and later received recognition at SXSW Interactive. The Bridge of Life public-service initiative, Look At Me, Blind Cap, adidas Glitch, and GE Droneweek were among other projects cited for awards or industry recognition. Cheil offices and affiliates also used seminars and cultural partnerships to address mobile communications, shopper marketing, social platforms, Korean pop culture, and connected-device experiences. In December 2017, Jeongkeun Yoo became president and CEO after Daiki Lim's resignation. In June 2020, Cheil announced the acquisition of ColourData, a Chinese social-media analytics company, to strengthen data and audience-insight capabilities. Cheil Worldwide remains an active Samsung-affiliated global marketing network serving both Samsung and a wider multinational client base.
