WYTU-LD

WYTU-LD is a low-power television station licensed to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and operated by Weigel Broadcasting. The station is affiliated with Telemundo and serves as the Milwaukee market's principal Spanish-language over-the-air television outlet. Although its low-power transmitter does not cover all of southeastern Wisconsin at full strength, the station's programming is extended across the market through a widescreen standard-definition simulcast on WDJT-TV's digital subchannel 58.4. WYTU-LD is also distributed through cable and satellite systems across much of Wisconsin and is relayed by associated low-power stations in other regional markets. The station is part of Weigel's Milwaukee television cluster, which includes CBS affiliate WDJT-TV, Class A MeTV outlet WBME-CD, and independent station WMLW-TV. WYTU-LD and its sister stations share studio facilities at the Renaissance Center office complex on South 60th Street in West Allis, while WYTU-LD's transmitter is located in Milwaukee's Lincoln Park near the transmitter used by ABC affiliate WISN-TV. This arrangement allows the station to combine a local low-power broadcast signal with broader market distribution through sister-station infrastructure. WYTU-LD's programming is built around the Telemundo network schedule, including Spanish-language news, entertainment, sports, scripted programming, and special events. It also produces local Spanish-language news under the name Noticiero Telemundo Wisconsin. The local news operation began with a short late-evening segment in 2007 and subsequently expanded to weekday midday, afternoon, and late-evening broadcasts. Production is supported by the bilingual newsroom resources of WDJT-TV, allowing stories and reporters to serve both English- and Spanish-language outlets. The station also carries the public-affairs program ¡Qué Pasa Wisconsin!. Sports are an important part of the station's local identity. WYTU-LD has served as a Spanish-language over-the-air home for selected Milwaukee Brewers games, generally Sunday home games, using camera positions shared with Bally Sports Wisconsin. It has also presented Spanish-language coverage of selected local sports events, including Green Bay Packers preseason football. In connection with a Weigel agreement involving Milwaukee Bucks games during the 2023–24 season, one game was presented in Spanish on WYTU-LD while the remaining games in that package aired in English on WMLW-TV. The station's history reflects the evolution of Milwaukee's Spanish-language television market and of low-power digital broadcasting. Weigel replaced its Univision affiliation with Telemundo in 1999 after a compensation dispute, then moved the station from channel 46 to channel 63 as W63CU to accommodate WDJT-TV's digital facilities and a consolidated transmission arrangement. The station adopted the WYTU-LP call sign in December 2003 as Weigel began pursuing local advertising and wider cable carriage aimed at Milwaukee's growing Latino population. Its digital service began on UHF channel 17 in December 2007, and the station later upgraded that signal to 720p high definition in 2012. The analog license was canceled in 2013. WYTU-LD remains an active Telemundo station whose practical service area is substantially larger than its primary low-power contour because of simulcasts, cable carriage, satellite availability, and relay stations.

WYTU-LD developed within Weigel Broadcasting's Milwaukee television portfolio and has primarily served as a Spanish-language network outlet rather than as a large standalone production operation. For much of its earlier history, the station functioned as a distribution outlet for Spanish-language network schedules. Its role became more clearly defined after Weigel ended its Univision affiliation in 1999 following a compensation dispute and affiliated the Milwaukee outlet with Telemundo. Within the following year, the station moved from UHF channel 46 to channel 63 and operated as W63CU. The move was connected with the need to accommodate WDJT-TV's digital channel 46 facilities and Weigel's effort to consolidate transmission infrastructure at Lincoln Park. In December 2003, the station adopted the WYTU-LP call sign. At that point Weigel began actively seeking local advertising directed at Milwaukee's expanding Latino population and pursuing broader cable carriage through retransmission-consent negotiations involving WDJT-TV. The station's digital service began on UHF channel 17 on December 10, 2007. Digital broadcasting gave WYTU a more useful long-term platform, while cable and satellite distribution helped compensate for the limited geographic reach of its low-power primary signal. Local programming expanded during the same period. In July 2007, WYTU introduced a brief local Spanish-language news segment, Noticiero Telemundo Wisconsin, within the 10 p.m. Telemundo national newscast. WDJT's bilingual newsroom provided production and reporting support. Over time, the local component became more substantial, combining locally produced stories with selected national and wire-service material. The station later carried weekday local newscasts at 11 a.m., 5 p.m., and 10 p.m., as well as the weekend public-affairs program ¡Qué Pasa Wisconsin!. The news operation allowed bilingual reporters and anchors to contribute to both WDJT's English-language broadcasts and WYTU's Spanish-language service. The station's analog and digital arrangements changed during the transition to digital television. In 2009, Weigel stopped using the analog channel 63 signal for the regular Telemundo Wisconsin schedule. Instead, the analog facility carried an enhanced nightlight service based on WDJT's CBS programming to assist viewers who had not yet completed the transition to digital television. That temporary CBS arrangement ended at the beginning of 2010. From then until 2011, the analog outlet carried the MeTV schedule, while Telemundo programming remained available through WYTU's digital service and another digital subchannel. The Federal Communications Commission canceled the analog WYTU-LP license on February 11, 2013. WYTU upgraded its channel 17 digital signal to 720p high definition on July 25, 2012. The timing enabled the station to carry Telemundo's Spanish-language Olympic coverage in HD. After the Olympics, WYTU also carried Green Bay Packers preseason football with Spanish-language play-by-play, with related simulcast distribution in the Green Bay market. In January 2009, WYTU had been added to WBME's digital signal on subchannel 49.4. Later channel and ownership-related changes affected how the station was distributed among Weigel's local multicast facilities. A major distribution change took effect on January 8, 2018, when the market-wide simulcast moved from WMLW-DT4 to WDJT-DT4. The switch was part of a coordinated Milwaukee spectrum reconfiguration involving Weigel, Sinclair, and Milwaukee PBS. Subsequent multicast changes included the replacement of This TV with Start TV on September 3, 2018, and the placement of Movies! on WYTU's 63.3 subchannel. WYTU's main Telemundo service continued to be distributed through the station's own digital signal, the WDJT-TV relay, and additional relay outlets including WFBN-LD in Rockford, WMYS-LD in South Bend, and WMEI in Green Bay. Because its low-power contour does not fully cover southeastern Wisconsin, the WDJT-TV simulcast is central to WYTU's regional role. Cable and satellite carriage has also extended the station well beyond Milwaukee, with availability described across much of Wisconsin, including markets west toward La Crosse and north toward Bayfield, subject to provider lineups and retransmission agreements. The station remains active as Weigel's Milwaukee Telemundo affiliate, combining network programming with local Spanish-language news, public affairs, and selected Brewers and other Wisconsin sports coverage.
