Overview
Wolverine is a scripted audio-drama podcast series based on Marvel Comics’ mutant character Logan, better known as Wolverine. The series was developed by Marvel New Media with Stitcher and represents Marvel’s first original scripted podcast. Rather than adapting a single existing comic-book storyline, it uses the audio format to build a new continuity around Wolverine, combining crime investigation, psychological mystery, mutant fiction, frontier drama, and horror-oriented atmosphere. The first season, Wolverine: The Long Night, places Logan in the fictional Alaskan town of Burns. Federal agents Sally Pierce and Tad Marshall arrive to investigate a sequence of serial murders, with Logan initially treated as the principal suspect. Their investigation exposes corruption within the community and gradually reveals Logan’s divided identity, fragmented memories, and attempts to remain detached from society. The narrative also introduces the Aurora cult, whose possible connection to the killings contributes to the season’s ambiguous supernatural tone. Logan’s pursuit of what he considers frontier justice becomes a central source of tension as the agents attempt to determine whether he is a perpetrator, a witness, or an unwilling participant in the violence. The first season was announced in December 2017 and launched through Stitcher Premium in March 2018 before receiving a wider release later that year. It consisted of ten episodes, with the opening two released together and subsequent episodes issued twice weekly. Richard Armitage voiced Logan, while the ensemble included Celia Keenan-Bolger as Agent Sally Pierce, Ato Essandoh as Agent Tad Marshall, Andrew Keenan-Bolger as Deputy Bobby Reid, Scott Adsit as Sheriff Ridge, Brian Stokes Mitchell as Nicholas Prophet, Bob Balaban as Joseph Langrock, and Dante Pereira-Olson as Johnny Moses. The production emphasized cinematic sound design, including location recording in outdoor settings and performances in which actors moved and interacted together rather than recording every part in isolation. A second season, Wolverine: The Lost Trail, was announced in November 2018 and premiered in March 2019. It moves the story from Alaska to New Orleans, where Logan searches for a former lover while people begin disappearing. He is assisted by a young boy, and the investigation brings him into contact with biker groups, Cajun thieves, Remy LeBeau—Gambit—and a refuge called Greenhaven, led by the powerful mutant Jason Wyngarde, also known as Mastermind. The season expanded the podcast’s use of Marvel characters while retaining the serialized mystery structure of the first installment. The podcast received substantial recognition for its writing, performances, music, and sound work. Apple included The Long Night among its best podcasts of 2018 and listed it among its most downloaded podcasts and new podcasts of that year. It won Best Scripted Podcast at the 2019 iHeartRadio Podcast Awards and received a 2019 Webby Award for original music and sound design in a podcast. Its reception helped establish the project as an important early example of a major comics property being developed as a premium serialized audio drama. The success of the audio series led to a five-issue Marvel comic adaptation of The Long Night. Benjamin Percy adapted his podcast script with artist Marcio Takara and cover artist Rafael Albuquerque. Marvel also expanded the property through a Spanish-language production, Wolverine: La Larga Noche, released in 2021 through its podcasting partnership with SiriusXM. In 2022, SiriusXM and Marvel continued the broader audio initiative with Marvel’s Wastelanders: Wolverine, featuring Robert Patrick as Wolverine and set within a version of the Old Man Logan universe. The podcast therefore functions both as a standalone Wolverine interpretation and as an early foundation for Marvel’s wider experiments with interconnected audio storytelling.
History
Marvel had experimented with audio storytelling before Wolverine, including a Fantastic Four radio series in 1974 and a Spider-Man concept album titled Rock Reflections of a Superhero. The Wolverine podcast represented a later, more fully serialized approach: a scripted drama designed for on-demand listening, supported by professional actors, original sound design, and a season-long mystery. Marvel New Media and Stitcher announced Wolverine: The Long Night on December 5, 2017. The project was positioned as an original story rather than a straightforward reading of previously published comics. The creative team included Marvel producers Chloe Wilson and Daniel Fink, Stitcher producer Jenny Radelet, and sound designers Brendan Baker and Chloe Prasinos. Benjamin Percy wrote the series, while the production used environmental recording and coordinated actor movement to give the drama a more physical and cinematic sonic identity. The Long Night premiered on Stitcher Premium on March 12, 2018, with two episodes released at launch and two episodes per week thereafter. Its ten-episode plot follows federal agents investigating murders in Burns, Alaska. Logan’s presence makes him the apparent center of the case, but the story gradually broadens into an exploration of his lost memories, his dual identity, local corruption, the Aurora cult, and his tendency to impose a personal form of justice. The setting and soundscape distinguish the series from conventional superhero adaptations by treating Wolverine as a figure in a remote crime thriller. The project’s early reception was favorable. Critics noted that the series was not without tonal or structural imperfections but recognized its promise and the effectiveness of bringing a comic-book universe into an audio-only format. Apple placed it among the best podcasts of 2018 and among that year’s most downloaded podcasts. In January 2019, The Long Night won Best Scripted Podcast at the inaugural iHeartRadio Podcast Awards. It also won a 2019 Webby Award for original music and sound design in a podcast. Marvel and Stitcher announced a second season, The Lost Trail, on November 5, 2018. The new story shifted to New Orleans and followed Logan as he searched for a former lover amid a series of human and mutant disappearances. The season introduced Gambit and Mastermind, while retaining the investigative and atmospheric qualities of the first season. It premiered on March 25, 2019, with Percy and Baker returning to the writing and production team and Chloe Prasinos continuing in an associate-director and sound-design role. The success of the audio drama led Marvel to adapt The Long Night into a five-issue comic miniseries. Percy handled the adaptation, with art by Marcio Takara and a cover by Rafael Albuquerque for the first issue. The adaptation condensed material from the podcast so that the original story could fit the comic format. A Spanish-language comic edition was also released by Panini Cómics Latinoamérica in Argentina in 2019. Marvel later broadened the property’s international and platform reach. Wolverine: La Larga Noche was released in September 2021 through Marvel’s podcasting partnership with SiriusXM. It used Percy’s original story as its foundation but reworked approximately half of the dialogue for Spanish-language performance. The production was directed by Alejandra López and primarily voiced in Mexican Spanish, with Joaquín Cosío as Wolverine, Brigitte Kali Canales as Agent Sally Pierce, Guillermo García as Agent Tad Marshall, Bruno Bichir as Sheriff Ridge, and Ricardo Chávez as Nicholas Prophet. The podcast also anticipated Marvel’s ambition to create a larger interconnected audio universe. In 2017, Percy described The Long Night as a possible starting point for what he called a Marvel Podcast Universe. Marvel and SiriusXM subsequently announced Marvel’s Wastelanders in 2021, a set of audio stories located in a version of the Old Man Logan setting. Marvel’s Wastelanders: Wolverine launched in June 2022 with Robert Patrick as the voice of Wolverine. This later project is related to Marvel’s audio strategy but is distinct from the two-season The Long Night and The Lost Trail narrative.
