Overview
Vertiv is an American critical-digital-infrastructure company whose products and services support the continuous operation of data centers, telecommunications facilities, edge-computing sites, and commercial and industrial installations. Its portfolio spans power management, thermal management, racks and enclosures, busway and switchgear, monitoring and control software, modular infrastructure, and professional and field services. The company's roots reach back to 1946, when Ralph Liebert established Capitol Refrigeration Industries in Columbus, Ohio. Liebert developed an early precision air-conditioning system for computer rooms, addressing the need to control temperature and humidity around increasingly sensitive electronic equipment. The technology was presented to IBM in the mid-1960s and helped establish the computer-room air-conditioning category. Liebert Corporation was formed in 1965 and subsequently expanded into power conditioning, distribution, monitoring, and uninterruptible power supplies. Its early international expansion included a Canadian distributor network and a manufacturing operation in Ireland. Liebert became publicly traded in 1981 before being acquired by Emerson Electric in 1987. Under Emerson, the business became part of Emerson Network Power, which consolidated several critical-power, thermal, enclosure, and network-management activities. The unit expanded through acquisitions including Avansys, Marconi's outside-plant and power business, Knürr, Avocent, and Chloride. Its portfolio increasingly addressed the complete physical and electrical environment around information technology rather than cooling alone. The Energy Logic efficiency model, introduced during this period, reflected the industry's growing focus on reducing data-center energy consumption. In 2016, Platinum Equity acquired Emerson Network Power in a transaction valued at more than $4 billion, and the business was renamed Vertiv. Rob Johnson became the first chief executive of the independent company. Vertiv later sold its ASCO power-switch business to Schneider Electric and added Energy Labs, Geist, and MEMS. In February 2020, Vertiv became a public company through a merger with GS Acquisition Holdings, a special purpose acquisition company, and began trading on the NYSE under the symbol VRT. The 2021 acquisition of E+I Engineering broadened its capabilities in switchgear, busway, modular power, and energy-management solutions. Vertiv primarily serves data centers, communications networks, and commercial and industrial customers. Its offerings range from individual UPS systems, rack power-distribution units, precision cooling equipment, and DC power systems to integrated modular data-center infrastructure and monitoring platforms. Services include commissioning, preventive maintenance, engineering, consulting, remote monitoring, training, spare parts, and performance assessments. The company operates internationally through manufacturing, assembly, service, and regional organizations, with regional headquarters or major operations in the United States, Switzerland, China, Singapore, and India. The growth of cloud computing, edge infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and high-density computing has increased demand for Vertiv's power and cooling technologies. In response, the company has emphasized direct liquid cooling, immersion-related systems, hybrid air-and-liquid cooling, high-density rack infrastructure, modular deployment, and digital-twin technologies. It has also pursued partnerships involving NVIDIA, Intel, Ballard Power Systems, Compass Datacenters, Caterpillar, Oklo, and other infrastructure and energy companies. Vertiv's market position is based on engineering expertise, installed base, global service capacity, and the ability to integrate multiple physical-infrastructure systems for customers operating equipment that cannot tolerate extended downtime.
History
Vertiv originated in 1946 as Capitol Refrigeration Industries, founded in Columbus, Ohio, by Ralph Liebert. Liebert's early work focused on precision refrigeration for electronic equipment. At a time when computers generated substantial heat and required stable environmental conditions, the company developed a precision air-conditioning prototype in Liebert's garage. The technology was introduced to IBM in the mid-1960s and subsequently demonstrated at an international computing event, helping establish a specialized market for computer-room air conditioning. Liebert Corporation was formed in 1965 with five associates. The company expanded from cooling into the broader infrastructure required by computer rooms. It established a Canadian distribution network in 1967, moved into new Ohio facilities, and opened a manufacturing operation in Ireland in 1983. In 1977, it created Conditioned Power Corporation to develop power-distribution, power-conditioning, and monitoring systems for data-processing customers. The acquisition of Programmed Power Corporation in 1983 strengthened its UPS capabilities. Liebert became a public company on NASDAQ in 1981, and Emerson Electric acquired it in 1987. Emerson consolidated Liebert and related activities into Emerson Network Power in 2000. The business developed a broad portfolio covering AC and DC power, cooling, enclosures, network management, and telecommunications infrastructure. Expansion in the 2000s included Avansys and Emerson Network Power India, Marconi's outside-plant and power systems, Germany's Knürr enclosure business, Avocent, and Chloride Group. The Energy Logic model, launched in 2007, promoted more efficient approaches to data-center infrastructure. In December 2016, Platinum Equity acquired Emerson Network Power. The new standalone company was named Vertiv, while Emerson retained a subordinated equity interest. Rob Johnson became chief executive. Vertiv sold ASCO to Schneider Electric in 2017 and completed acquisitions of Energy Labs, Geist, and MEMS in 2018. The company entered the public markets in February 2020 through a business combination with GS Acquisition Holdings and began trading on the NYSE as VRT. Vertiv continued to broaden its electrical-infrastructure platform with the acquisition of E+I Engineering in 2021. E+I added switchgear, busway, modular power, and energy-management capabilities. As data-center demand shifted toward cloud, edge, and artificial-intelligence workloads, Vertiv increasingly focused on high-density power delivery, liquid cooling, modular deployment, monitoring, and integrated reference architectures. Partnerships with NVIDIA, Intel, Ballard Power Systems, Compass Datacenters, Caterpillar, Oklo, and other companies have addressed AI cooling, alternative backup power, data-center energy supply, and deployment in constrained power environments. Today, Vertiv serves customers across data centers, communications networks, and commercial and industrial environments. Its global organization combines product manufacturing and assembly with a large field-service network. The Vertiv portfolio includes legacy and acquired brands such as Liebert, NetSure, Geist, Avocent, Albér, Energy Labs, E+I Engineering, and PowerBar. The company's historical development reflects the convergence of thermal management, critical power, physical infrastructure, and digital monitoring into an integrated data-center infrastructure industry.
