Vermont Telephone Company

VTel is a small, family-owned telecommunications company located in Springfield, Vermont, delivering residential, small business and enterprise consumers with fiber-optic Internet, telephone and television services across 14 rural Vermont villages. Its sister company, VTel Wireless, offers 4G LTE and VoLTE Internet and mobile voice solutions throughout Vermont, eastern New York and Western New Hampshire. Since operations started in 1890, VTel's network has grown to include over a 1,400-mile optical fiber network spanning from Vermont to New York City, to Boston and Montréal.

VTel started operations in 1890. In 1923, VTel provided the phone line that enabled former President Calvin Coolidge to be sworn in as the 30th President of the United States in Plymouth Notch, VT. In 1994, VTel became the first to offer Vermonters a dial-up Internet service. Five years later, VTel introduced DSL. In 2010, VTel became one of the largest U.S. federal government rural broadband ARRA awardees, receiving $92 million in federal grants, leading to building one of the state's most advanced fiber optic networks.
