Overview
Ursus Breweries is a Romanian beer producer headquartered in Bucharest and one of the country’s largest brewing businesses. Its portfolio includes the domestic brands Ursus, Timișoreana, Ciucaș, Stejar and Azuga, alongside international labels such as Grolsch, Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Pilsner Urquell and St. Stefanus. The company also markets Redd’s and Kingswood cider, giving it a broader position in beer and adjacent alcoholic refreshment categories. The company’s historical roots reach back to brewing activity in Cluj during the nineteenth century. A brewery existed on the former Monastery Estate by the early 1800s, and the operation was subsequently managed by the Sigmond family and then by Czell Frigyes and Sons. Industrial brewing expanded in Cluj and Brașov during the late nineteenth century. In the interwar period, the Cluj operation developed the Ursus name as a light-beer brand. The bear emblem became a central part of the brand identity, and the Ursus Beer Hall opened in Cluj in 1926. The business experienced financial pressure during the economic crisis of the late 1920s and early 1930s, including restructuring, ownership changes and a merger with the Turda brewery. The brewery was nationalized in 1948 and became part of Romania’s socialist industrial system. Production at the Cluj site grew substantially during the communist period, reaching 424,000 hectoliters annually by 1974 according to historical material cited in the company’s background. The modern corporate structure emerged through consolidation after the end of communism. South African Breweries acquired Vulturul Buzău in 1996 and Ursus S.A. Cluj-Napoca and Pitber Pitești in 1997. Ursus S.A. acquired a majority stake in Timișoreana Beer in 2001, and the two businesses were merged in 2002 under Romania Beer Company S.A. SABMiller acquired a majority stake in Aurora Brașov in 2004; Aurora then merged with Romania Beer Company. SABMiller’s Romanian operations adopted the Ursus Breweries name in 2005. On 31 March 2017, Asahi Group Holdings completed the acquisition of Ursus Breweries as part of its purchase of SABMiller’s Central and Eastern European beer businesses and brands. Ursus Breweries consequently became a subsidiary of Asahi Breweries Europe Ltd. The transaction preserved the company’s core line of business while placing its Romanian portfolio within Asahi’s regional operating structure. Ursus Breweries operates breweries in Timișoara, Buzău and Brașov, as well as a craft mini-brewery in Cluj-Napoca. The Cluj facility, known as Fabrica de Bere Ursus, replaced the former brewery’s production arrangement in 2011 and is open to visitors. The company employs approximately 1,400 people, according to the referenced Wikipedia material. Its market role combines mass-market Romanian lager production with premium imported brands, specialty and unfiltered products, non-alcoholic beer, flavored beer beverages and cider.
History
Brewing in Cluj predates the modern Ursus corporate identity. A brewery operated on the former Monastery Estate by the early nineteenth century, with brewing rights and associated beer outlets periodically leased to private operators. In 1868, Elek Sigmond and Domokos Biasini took over the lease, and the Sigmond family later expanded the operation. The Sigmond Brothers company was registered in 1876, and production records show a growing brewery in the 1880s. At the turn of the twentieth century, the brewery was acquired by Czell Frigyes and Sons, a company with brewing and distilling interests in the Brașov area. The acquisition and modernization of the Cluj premises marked an important stage in the development of industrial brewing there. The company reopened and renovated the beer hall in 1901, strengthening the site’s role as both a production facility and a public hospitality venue. After World War I and the political transfer of Transylvania to Romania, the company adapted its product names and commercial identity to a changed market. In 1923, its dark double-malt beer was renamed Hercules and its light beer Monastery. By 1924, the light beer was marketed as Ursus, a name that became enduringly associated with the Cluj brewery. The bear symbol was registered and later adjusted, while the Ursus Beer Hall opened in 1926 on the site of the earlier beer hall. The interwar business faced severe financial difficulties. War damage, the loss of agricultural estates, high borrowing costs and a sharp fall in beer consumption weakened the company. In 1927, the Cluj brewery was reorganized as Ursus Brewery Joint Stock Company. It was subsequently acquired by the Turda Brewery and combined with that business as Ursus United Cluj and Turda Breweries Inc. The economic crisis continued into the early 1930s. The company used price reductions, production adjustments and public promotion, including a large 1931 parade in Cluj, to stimulate demand. Market conditions improved during the early 1940s, and the brewery supplied both light Ursus beer and dark Gloria beer. Production was disrupted again by the Second World War and the shifting administration of Transylvania. In 1948, the brewery was nationalized. During the socialist period it became part of a large state brewing enterprise, and output expanded considerably. Historical material identifies annual production of 424,000 hectoliters by 1974. The post-communist corporate history began with privatization and consolidation. South African Breweries acquired Vulturul Buzău in 1996 and then acquired Ursus S.A. Cluj-Napoca and Pitber Pitești in 1997. Ursus S.A. took a majority position in Timișoreana Beer in 2001, and the two companies were merged in 2002 as Romania Beer Company S.A. In 2004, SABMiller acquired a majority stake in Aurora Brașov, which merged with Romania Beer Company during the same year. SABMiller’s Romanian operating company adopted the Ursus Breweries name in 2005. The company’s production network developed around breweries in Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Brașov and Buzău. The Cluj site was converted to a craft mini-brewery in 2011, while the larger industrial network continued to serve the national market. Ursus Breweries also expanded its portfolio through local brands and internationally recognized labels. On 31 March 2017, Asahi Group Holdings completed its acquisition of Ursus Breweries as part of the purchase of SABMiller’s former Central and Eastern European beer operations. Ursus Breweries became a subsidiary of Asahi Breweries Europe Ltd. The company remains an active Romanian brewer with a portfolio spanning mainstream, premium, specialty and adjacent alcoholic beverage categories.
