Overview
Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) is the music-publishing division of Universal Music Group and one of the largest companies in the global publishing sector. Unlike a recorded-music label, which primarily releases sound recordings, UMPG works with the underlying musical works: compositions, lyrics, writer shares, synchronization rights, mechanical rights, performance rights, and related forms of copyright administration. Its activities include signing and developing songwriters, representing established catalogs, licensing music for film, television, advertising, games, and digital platforms, collecting royalties, and administering copyrights on behalf of third parties. The company traces its corporate publishing heritage to MCA Music Publishing, whose roots extend to MCA's 1964 acquisition of Lou Levy's Leeds Music. MCA expanded its publishing holdings through acquisitions and catalog integrations, including the ABC Records catalog in 1979 and additional catalogs during the 1990s. The 1998 acquisition of PolyGram by Seagram and the subsequent integration of the MCA and PolyGram music businesses created Universal Music Group in 1999. The resulting publishing operation combined the former MCA and PolyGram publishing assets, including catalogs associated with Dick James Music, Welk Music, Cedarwood Publishing, and Sweden Music. A major expansion came in 2000, when the company acquired Rondor Music from Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss. The transaction brought a substantial body of copyrights into the Universal publishing library, including publishing interests connected with A&M Records, I.R.S. Records, Stax Records, Shelter Records, and Sea of Tunes. In 2006, UMPG acquired BMG Music Publishing. That deal added important European and international assets, including Éditions Durand and Casa Ricordi, and helped make Universal the world's largest music publisher at that time. Some catalogs were subsequently divested to Imagem, which later became part of Concord Music Publishing, as part of the acquisition process. UMPG's roster and administered repertoire span contemporary pop, hip-hop, rock, country, electronic music, classical music, film and television music, and historic popular-song catalogs. Publicly associated writers and artists include Adele, Bad Bunny, Coldplay, Drake, Elton John, Kendrick Lamar, Post Malone, Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, SZA, Rosalía, and the Weeknd. The company has also pursued major catalog transactions involving works associated with Bob Dylan, Sting, and Neil Diamond. Its catalog is described as containing more than four million songs, supported by a global network of offices and local operations. The company is also a major licensing and administration partner for audiovisual businesses. Its relationships include film and television groups such as Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, Lionsgate, MGM, Paramount, Disney in specified territories, Amazon, HBO, DreamWorks, DreamWorks Animation, Legendary Pictures, NBC, and Sesame Workshop. In addition, UMPG administers or owns interests in numerous specialist and legacy catalogs, including Rondor Music, Casa Ricordi, selected Interscope and Def Jam publishing interests, and works associated with composers such as Leonard Bernstein and Henry Mancini. Jody Gerson became chairman and chief executive officer in January 2015. Her appointment marked a significant leadership milestone for the music-publishing industry, and she later received major industry recognition, including Billboard and Variety executive honors. UMPG has repeatedly ranked first in Billboard publisher market-share measurements. In 2023, Billboard reported that the company had held more than 30 percent share for three consecutive quarters, a level described as unprecedented for a publisher since 2014. UMPG remains exposed to the wider structural issues affecting copyright licensing, including the bargaining power of digital platforms, the division between recorded-music and publis…
History
Universal Music Publishing Group's history is rooted in the publishing assets assembled by MCA and PolyGram before those businesses were brought together under Universal Music Group. MCA entered the modern publishing period through its 1964 acquisition of Lou Levy's Leeds Music. It subsequently broadened its catalog through the 1979 acquisition of ABC Records and through additional publishing purchases and integrations during the 1990s, including All Nations Music and publishing interests connected with Interscope Records and Manny Records. The corporate structure changed substantially after Seagram acquired PolyGram in 1998. The transaction was valued at approximately $10.4 billion, and the PolyGram music operations were combined with Seagram's MCA music business. The integration, completed in January 1999, formed Universal Music Group and brought together the two companies' publishing operations. PolyGram contributed catalogs and publishing interests associated with Dick James Music, Welk Music, Cedarwood Publishing, and Sweden Music, among others. In August 2000, Universal acquired Rondor Music from Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss for approximately $400 million. Rondor had links to important publishing assets associated with A&M Records, I.R.S. Records, Stax Records, Shelter Records, and Sea of Tunes. The deal added roughly 60,000 copyrights and materially strengthened Universal's position in the administration and exploitation of established song catalogs. The largest expansion in the company's early history followed in 2006, when Universal Music Publishing Group acquired BMG Music Publishing from Bertelsmann Music Group for approximately €1.63 billion. The acquisition included significant European and international publishing properties, among them Éditions Durand and Casa Ricordi, as well as former publishing interests connected with Benson Records and Zomba. It made Universal the largest music publisher in the world at the time. Regulatory and portfolio considerations required divestitures, including the Zomba UK catalog, European rights in Zomba USA, Rondor UK, 19 Music, and the BBC catalog. These assets were transferred to Imagem, which later became part of Concord Music Publishing. Universal continued to add focused assets. On May 7, 2013, it acquired American music publisher Criterion Music Corporation. The company also developed a broad administration business covering catalogs owned by or connected with record companies, film and television studios, specialist publishers, and individual writers. Its administered repertoire has included works associated with Leonard Bernstein, Henry Mancini, Charlie Daniels, Casa Ricordi, DreamWorks Animation, HBO, Paramount, Disney Music Publishing in specified territories, Epitaph Records, and other rights holders. Jody Gerson became chairman and CEO on January 1, 2015. Her appointment made her the first woman to lead a major global music-publishing company, according to industry accounts. She subsequently received Billboard executive recognition, including an Executive of the Year honor, and was named a Variety Hitmakers executive of the year in 2019. Under her leadership, UMPG continued emphasizing songwriter development, global administration, synchronization, and strategic catalog acquisitions. In 2018, UMPG and Disney Music Publishing expanded their business relationship into additional territories, including continental Europe, the United Kingdom, Israel, Ireland, and selected Caribbean and African markets. By the early 2020s, UMPG described its global network as comprising offices in 40 countries, with a repertoire of more than four million songs. The company also attracted major contemporary writers and acquired or represented important catalogs connected with Bob Dylan, Sting, and Neil Diamond. UMPG's market position was highlighted in 2023, when Billboard reported that it ranked first in its publisher market-share measurement for three consecutive quarters and had surpassed 30 percent share during that period. In 2024, the company became involved in a significant platform-licensing development when TikTok announced that its license to use UMPG's catalog would expire on March 1. The episode illustrated the continuing importance of negotiations between music-rights owners and large digital platforms.
