Overview
UHU is a German adhesive brand operated by UHU GmbH & Co. KG and headquartered in Bühl, Germany. Its products are used in household repair, education, crafts, model making, professional work and selected industrial applications. The brand is particularly associated with its general-purpose adhesive, often marketed in German-speaking markets with the phrase “Der Alleskleber,” and with a yellow-and-black visual identity. The business traces its origins to 1905, when August Fischer, a dispensing chemist, acquired a small chemical plant. The original operation produced inks, rubber-stamp pads, paints and adhesives. Fischer’s most important product development came in 1932, when he created a transparent synthetic-resin adhesive capable of bonding a broad range of materials. The product was named UHU, the German word for the eagle-owl, following a period custom in the writing-materials sector of giving products bird names. The name also became associated with German model-aircraft culture and the “Der Kleine Uhu” youth competition, although accounts of the precise naming history differ. UHU’s product scope expanded from its early all-purpose glue into a broad range of formulations designed for paper, cardboard, wood, plastics, metals and other materials. The portfolio includes liquid glues, glue sticks, contact and construction adhesives, instant adhesives, craft products, repair products and adhesive tapes. Products are sold through retail, stationery, education, do-it-yourself, hobby and professional channels. Manufacturing is concentrated mainly in Europe, while distribution extends to more than 125 countries. Corporate ownership changed several times. In 1971, the company named after its leading product was acquired by the British Beecham Group, which later became part of GlaxoSmithKline. A management buyout restored its independence for a period beginning in 1989. In 1994, UHU became a wholly owned subsidiary of Bolton Group, an Italian branded-consumer-goods company. The brand therefore has German operational roots and Italian group ownership. UHU has also used product demonstrations to communicate bonding strength. In Germany in October 2007, an adhesive derivative was used to suspend an approximately four-tonne Ford pickup truck from a crane by bonding two steel components. The demonstration received a Guinness World Records entry, although Henkel surpassed the record in 2009 with a heavier setup. Since 2016, UHU has introduced plant-based adhesive products and formulations emphasizing reduced plastic use and the absence of solvents in selected products. The brand continues to operate as an international adhesive business under Bolton Group.
History
UHU’s corporate and product history begins in 1905, when August Fischer, a dispensing chemist, purchased a small chemical plant. The facility initially manufactured a mixture of chemical and stationery-related goods, including inks, rubber-stamp pads, paints and adhesives. This diversified beginning provided the technical base for the company’s later specialization in bonding products. A major turning point came in 1932. Fischer developed a transparent synthetic-resin adhesive that could bond many different materials. At a time when writing and stationery products were frequently given bird-related names, the adhesive was named UHU, the German term for the eagle-owl. The bird was associated with the Black Forest, where it could still be found during the period. Other accounts connect the name with model-aircraft kits and the “Der Kleine Uhu” youth competition, which helped make the product familiar among German hobbyists. The competing explanations are part of the brand’s recorded history, but the product name ultimately became more prominent than the original company identity. The adhesive’s broad-material capability established UHU as a general-purpose product rather than a narrowly specialized glue. Over time, the brand developed products for paper, wood, plastics, metals and other substrates. Its uses expanded across homes, schools, offices, craft studios, model-making activities, do-it-yourself work and professional repair. The recognizable yellow packaging, black lettering and the German descriptor “Der Alleskleber” reinforced the idea of a versatile, everyday adhesive. In 1971, the company that had adopted the UHU name was acquired by Beecham Group, a British consumer and healthcare business. Beecham subsequently became part of GlaxoSmithKline. UHU later regained independence for several years following a management buyout in 1989. In 1994, it became wholly owned by Bolton Group, an Italian manufacturer and owner of branded consumer products. Under Bolton, UHU retained its German base in Bühl while operating as an international brand. The company’s production activities are concentrated mainly in Europe, whereas its products are distributed in more than 125 countries. This gives UHU a structure combining European manufacturing with broad international retail distribution. The range now covers general-purpose glues, sticks, instant adhesives, craft and hobby products, repair adhesives and tapes, with formulations adapted to different materials and usage conditions. UHU has periodically used highly visible demonstrations to support its strength claims. In October 2007, a UHU adhesive derivative was used in Germany to connect two steel parts and suspend an approximately four-tonne Ford pickup truck from a crane. The stunt was recorded as a Guinness World Records achievement, although Henkel surpassed it in 2009 with a heavier load. More recently, UHU has addressed environmental product expectations through selected plant-based adhesive products introduced from 2016 onward. These products were presented as using plant-derived materials, reduced plastic and, in selected cases, no solvents. The brand remains active as part of Bolton Group, serving consumer, educational, hobby, professional and repair markets.
