Overview
TX Group AG is a Swiss media and digital-platform company headquartered in Zurich. The group traces its origins to 1893 and was historically known as Tamedia AG. It developed from a newspaper publisher into one of Switzerland's broadest media businesses, combining daily and weekly newspapers, magazines, free commuter publications, digital news services, advertising sales, classified platforms and technology investments. The company's publishing portfolio has included influential Swiss titles such as Tages-Anzeiger, SonntagsZeitung, Der Bund, Berner Zeitung, Tribune de Genève, 24 heures, Thurgauer Zeitung and Zürichsee-Zeitung. Its 20 Minuten and 20 Minutes publications serve multilingual Swiss markets through free print and digital editions and have become central parts of its audience strategy. The portfolio also includes specialist and consumer magazines such as Finanz und Wirtschaft, Annabelle, Schweizer Familie and Das Magazin, although the composition of the portfolio has changed over time through disposals, partnerships and restructuring. Tamedia expanded substantially into digital services and marketplaces. Holdings and investments associated with the group have included Ricardo, tutti.ch, Homegate, Doodle, JobCloud, local.ch and search.ch, car4you, autoricardo.ch, Olmero, renovero, Starticket, Trendsales, MoneyPark, Zattoo and Monito. These activities broadened the business beyond traditional advertising and circulation revenue into classifieds, property, employment, mobility, events, financial services, comparison tools and other online services. The group was listed on the Swiss stock exchange in 2000. In 2018, the company announced the TX Group brand architecture, and on January 1, 2020, Tamedia was formally renamed TX Group AG. The reorganization placed the group's activities into four principal operating companies: TX Markets, Goldbach, 20 Minuten and Tamedia. TX Markets covers marketplaces and digital transactions; Goldbach focuses on advertising marketing and sales; 20 Minuten operates the free news brand; and Tamedia retains the publishing business. TX Group is one of Switzerland's largest media companies and has historically held a particularly strong position in the Swiss press market, including in French-speaking Switzerland. Its principal national competitors include Ringier, NZZ Mediengruppe and CH Media. The company also operates its own printing infrastructure and participates in shared digital-news and editorial initiatives. Its Zurich headquarters, completed in 2013, was designed by architect Shigeru Ban and uses a prominent timber structural system. TX Group remains active, although its assets, brands and organizational boundaries continue to evolve as the company responds to the migration of audiences and advertising from print to digital media.
History
TX Group's history begins in 1893 with the establishment of the newspaper business that later became associated with the Tamedia name. Over more than a century, the company developed through the publication of newspapers and magazines serving Switzerland's German-, French- and Italian-speaking regions. Its best-known traditional title is Tages-Anzeiger, a Zurich daily that became a major source of news and public debate in the country's largest linguistic market. During the twentieth century and the early years of the twenty-first, the group expanded its publishing footprint through regional and national titles. The portfolio came to include newspapers such as Der Bund, Berner Zeitung, Tribune de Genève, 24 heures, Thurgauer Zeitung and Zürichsee-Zeitung, together with weekly publications including SonntagsZeitung and specialist magazines such as Finanz und Wirtschaft. Consumer titles included Annabelle, Schweizer Familie, Das Magazin and television and leisure supplements. The company also built printing capacity to support its publishing operations. Tamedia became a publicly listed company in 2000. Listing gave the group access to public capital while it continued consolidating its position in the Swiss press market. By 2011, it was described as the country's largest press-market participant, with especially strong reach in French-speaking Switzerland. The business nevertheless faced the structural pressures affecting newspaper publishers internationally: declining print circulation, the migration of advertising to online services and changing consumer habits. The group pursued diversification in response. It operated or invested in classified and transactional platforms covering property, jobs, cars, general goods, events and other services. Notable digital assets and participations included Ricardo, tutti.ch, Homegate, Doodle, JobCloud, local.ch, search.ch, car4you, autoricardo.ch, Olmero, renovero, Starticket, Trendsales, MoneyPark, Zattoo and Monito. These businesses gave the company exposure to marketplace commissions, subscriptions, lead generation, digital advertising and technology-enabled services in addition to newspaper sales. Tamedia also experimented with broadcasting. Between 2001 and 2011 it owned local television and radio assets, including TeleZüri, Radio 24 and Radio Basilisk. Those holdings were sold in 2011 after the company took over Edipresse's Swiss activities, reflecting a decision to concentrate more strongly on publishing and digital platforms. A major digital-news initiative was Newsnet, a shared editorial and technology operation supporting web portals associated with several Tamedia newspapers, including Tages-Anzeiger, Der Bund, Berner Zeitung, Tribune de Genève, 24 heures and Le Matin. The group also launched the #12 application in 2015, aggregating selected stories from its editorial teams. Its free 20 Minuten brand became one of Switzerland's largest online-news properties by audience reach, complementing its print distribution. In 2018, Tamedia announced a new group structure and the TX Group identity. The rebranding became legally effective on January 1, 2020. The reorganized group was divided into TX Markets, Goldbach, 20 Minuten and Tamedia. This structure separated marketplaces, advertising sales, the free-news operation and the traditional publishing business while retaining them within the same listed group. TX Group's headquarters in Zurich were completed in 2013. Designed by Shigeru Ban, the building uses timber as a major structural element and presents the structure through extensive glazing. The headquarters symbolizes the company's transformation from a conventional newspaper publisher into a diversified media and digital-services group. Its continuing strategic challenge is to maintain high-quality journalism and strong Swiss brands while developing scalable digital businesses and adapting to changing regulation, competition and advertising economics.
