TVRI
Indonesia's national public television network
Last updated August 31, 2026
Overview
TVRI is Indonesia's national public television network, established in 1962, making it the oldest television station in the country. It provides nationwide news, educational, and cultural programs, covering all of Indonesia.
History
TVR Internațional is the overseas channel of Televiziunea Română, Romania's government-funded television network. Known in abbreviated form as TVRi, it was established to make Romanian public television available to audiences outside the country, particularly Romanian citizens and diaspora communities. The channel's documented service is international in scope and has been distributed across Europe, Canada, and the United States, with later or additional carriage in Australia, New Zealand, Israel, and Portugal. The channel's programming model is centered on Romanian-language content. Its role is not limited to retransmitting a domestic general-interest schedule: TVRi provides an international-facing service intended to preserve access to Romanian news, culture, entertainment, and public events for viewers abroad. Romanian is the principal language, while selected programming also appears in Hungarian, Romany, and German, languages associated with minority communities in Romania. Some content is presented in English. This multilingual element broadens the channel's relevance beyond a narrowly defined expatriate audience while retaining Romanian public broadcasting as its organizing identity. International distribution has developed through both broadcast availability and platform partnerships. In 2004, TVRi was made available through HOT in Israel after Romanian-speaking subscribers requested the channel. In July 2005, the service expanded to Australia and New Zealand. On 2 October 2007, it launched on TV Cabo in Portugal in conjunction with the introduction of additional channels intended for immigrant communities. These examples show how TVRi's expansion has relied in part on local television operators serving concentrated diaspora populations. TVRi also operates as a live online service, allowing viewers to watch the channel through the internet rather than relying solely on terrestrial, satellite, or cable access. In 2020, Televiziunea Română added an HD feed of TVR i to the TVR+ platform. The documented feed is delivered in 720p, representing a digital and technical extension of the channel's international distribution. A significant part of TVRi's audience appeal comes from live and nationally important programming. The Eurovision Song Contest is identified as the channel's most watched programming during the year, reflecting the ability of major cultural broadcasts to connect Romanian viewers abroad with events of broad domestic interest. Overall, TVRi functions as a diaspora-oriented extension of Romania's public broadcaster: it distributes Romanian television internationally, supports cultural and linguistic continuity, and provides access to selected public-service programming through both traditional and online channels.
