Overview
Tsinghua University Press (TUP) is a comprehensive university press established in June 1980 under the sponsorship of Tsinghua University and supervised by China's Ministry of Education. Headquartered at the Tsinghua University Xueyan Building in Beijing, it has grown from a traditional academic publisher into a group-structured publishing enterprise. In April 2009 it was restructured from a wholly people-owned enterprise into a limited liability company, and in October 2014 the Tsinghua University Press Group was established. TUP publishes roughly 3,000 titles a year across books, audio-visual products and electronic publications, with more than 20,000 active titles in circulation. Its catalogue spans higher-education textbooks, science and engineering monographs, computer and information technology books, economics, management, humanities and social sciences, foreign languages, life sciences and medicine, vocational education and basic education. Computer books are widely regarded as its signature brand, while science, engineering and basic disciplines form a strong core, and its economics, humanities and social science lists have gained broad influence. The press operates eight publishing divisions — science and engineering; computer and information; economics, management, humanities and social sciences; foreign languages; life sciences and medicine; vocational education; basic education; and audio-visual, electronic and digital publishing — alongside three centres for academic publishing, journals and thematic publishing, and seven subsidiaries. This structure supports an integrated publishing model covering books, journals, audio-visual products, electronic publications and online media. Academic publishing and internationalisation are central to TUP's strategy. It founded its Journal Centre in March 2011 and now publishes 67 journals, including 26 English-language science and technology journals indexed by SCI or ESCI and 7 Chinese social science journals covered by CSSCI or its extended edition; 39 projects have been selected for China's Excellence Action Plan for Science and Technology Journals. In June 2022 the press launched SciOpen, a self-developed international digital publishing platform for science and technology journals. As a founding member of the China Book International Promotion Programme working group, TUP has licensed more than 1,500 titles in over 30 languages to publishers in North America, Europe and Asia, and has published more than 600 titles in traditional Chinese for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. TUP has received numerous national honours, including Advanced University Press (1995), National Outstanding Publisher (1998), the first China Publishing Government Award for Advanced Publishing Units (2007), National Top 100 Book Publishing Units (2009), the fourth China Publishing Government Award for Advanced Publishing Units (2018), and the first National Teaching Materials Construction Award as a national advanced collective (2021). It was also named a 2023–2024 National Key Cultural Export Enterprise. The press describes its mission as 'spreading advanced culture and promoting social progress' and positions itself as striving toward becoming a world-class university press.
History
Tsinghua University Press was established in 1980 under the institutional umbrella of Tsinghua University. Its initial purpose was to publish and circulate university-level teaching and scholarly materials, particularly in fields connected with the university's academic strengths. As China's higher-education and scientific systems expanded, the press became an important channel for textbooks, research works, and professional knowledge. During its early development, the press's catalogue was centered on printed academic and instructional publications. Engineering, science, mathematics, computer science, technology, economics, management, architecture, and related fields formed a substantial part of its profile. The publisher's university affiliation helped it recruit authors from academic and professional communities and gave its publications a strong connection to teaching and research needs. The growth of China's information-technology sector created a major opportunity for the press. As computing, software, networking, digital communications, and information management became increasingly important in universities and workplaces, Tsinghua University Press expanded its publishing in these areas. Its technology books served students, instructors, programmers, engineers, and professional learners, while its broader textbook programme supported courses across many disciplines. The press subsequently broadened beyond conventional university textbooks. Its output came to include academic monographs, reference books, translated works, vocational and continuing-education materials, examination preparation, school education resources, and books for general readers. This diversification enabled it to serve formal institutions as well as individuals studying independently or developing professional skills. Like other educational publishers, Tsinghua University Press has had to respond to the transition from print to digital learning. Its activities have extended to electronic publications, digital content, online resources, and forms of knowledge service that complement physical books. These developments reflect changes in teaching practice, the spread of online education, and the increasing importance of searchable and updateable technical content. The press has also participated in international publishing and knowledge exchange through translated publications and cooperation with overseas publishers and institutions. International activity has supported the circulation of Chinese academic and technical work while giving Chinese readers access to selected foreign scholarship and professional literature. Today, Tsinghua University Press operates as a diversified university-affiliated publisher. Its public identity remains anchored in academic credibility and the Tsinghua University relationship, while its commercial and educational scope includes textbooks, research publications, professional learning, school materials, technology books, and digital resources. Reliable public sources do not establish a separately listed stock or provide a sufficiently complete, verified chronology of corporate leadership and individual product launches; those areas are therefore left open rather than inferred.
