Toyo Denki Seizo K.K. was established on June 20, 1918, with capital of 3 million yen, following a technical tie-up with Dick Kerr & Co. Ltd. of the UK. The company aimed to domesticate the production of railway vehicle electrical equipment. In 1919, the Yokohama Plant began operations. In 1920, the company delivered its first direct controllers and main motors to Keihan Electric Railway. In 1921, it completed Japan's first domestically produced pantograph. In 1932, it completed Japan's first trolleybus electrical equipment. In 1935, it completed Japan's first diesel-electric railcar. In 1949, its shares were listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
