UnclaimedA major Chinese online marketplace connecting consumers with individual sellers, small businesses, brands, content creators and service providers.
Last updated October 8, 2026
Overview
Taobao is a Chinese online shopping platform headquartered in Hangzhou and owned by Alibaba Group. It was launched in 2003 as a consumer-to-consumer (C2C) marketplace, allowing small businesses and individual entrepreneurs to open online stores catering mainly to consumers in Chinese-speaking regions, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and abroad. The platform supports both fixed-price and auction-style listings, though fixed-price sales dominate. Taobao's payment infrastructure is anchored by Alipay, Alibaba's escrow-based payment service, which helped build trust between buyers and sellers. Taobao emerged as a direct response to eBay's acquisition of Eachnet in 2003. By offering free listings, instant messaging between buyers and sellers, and escrow payments, Taobao rapidly gained market share, overtaking eBay China within two years. eBay shut down its Chinese site in 2006. Taobao subsequently became the dominant consumer e-commerce platform in China. In 2011, Alibaba restructured Taobao into three entities: Taobao Marketplace (C2C), Tmall.com (B2C), and eTao (shopping search engine). Today, Taobao operates as a comprehensive marketplace offering a vast array of product categories, from apparel and electronics to home goods and lifestyle services. It integrates livestreaming, personalized recommendations, and social features. According to Alexa rank, it was the eighth most-visited website globally in 2021, and as of at least 2024, it is the world's most popular shopping hub as measured by gross merchandise value. Taobao remains a subsidiary of Alibaba Group, which is publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
History
Taobao emerged from Alibaba’s original business-to-business orientation. Before 2003, Alibaba had concentrated on helping companies find wholesale suppliers and buyers online. The competitive environment changed when eBay acquired EachNet, then China’s leading online auction service, for approximately US$180 million. The acquisition signaled eBay’s intention to become a major force in Chinese consumer e-commerce and prompted Alibaba to build a domestic alternative. Alibaba launched Taobao in 2003 as a consumer marketplace. Its initial proposition was deliberately adapted to Chinese internet users and small merchants. Sellers could create storefronts and list goods with limited or no listing charges, while buyers could communicate with sellers through an integrated messaging service. Unlike many early marketplace models, Taobao made transaction trust a central design problem. Alipay, introduced in 2004, used an escrow-like process in which the buyer’s payment was held until the transaction reached an acceptable stage. This arrangement reduced the risk of sending money to an unknown seller and became one of the platform’s most important institutional innovations. Taobao’s marketplace model emphasized breadth and participation. Individuals could sell used or new goods, while small factories, traders and specialist merchants could establish permanent online shops. Most transactions eventually shifted toward fixed-price listings rather than auctions. Product ratings, customer reviews, store-level reputation and comparison shopping gave users tools for judging sellers, although the review system also created continuing risks involving fabricated feedback, competitor interference and reputation manipulation. The platform gained ground quickly against eBay China. According to historical accounts cited in reference material, Taobao’s share of the mainland Chinese consumer e-commerce market rose from roughly 8 percent in 2003 to about 59 percent in 2005, while eBay China’s share declined over the same period. eBay closed its Chinese web business in 2006. Taobao’s success reflected more than free listings: local market adaptation, Chinese-language user experience, direct buyer-seller communication, Alipay, seller variety and Alibaba’s willingness to invest in scale all helped create a competitive network. In 2008, Taobao introduced a seven-day return-right policy for clothing purchased through the platform and later extended the principle to additional product categories. The policy helped normalize consumer-protection expectations in Chinese online retail and was later reflected in national online-trading rules. Around the same period, Taobao broadened its role beyond listings and checkout. It developed mobile applications, seller analytics, search and recommendation systems, digital entertainment experiments and partnerships intended to connect shopping with media. A major structural change came in 2011, when Alibaba announced that Taobao’s activities would be separated into three businesses: Taobao Marketplace for consumer-to-consumer retail, Tmall for business-to-consumer retail, and eTao for shopping search. The reorganization allowed each service to pursue a more focused strategy. Taobao remained the open, highly varied marketplace, while Tmall concentrated on brand owners and authorized distributors. Although separated organizationally, the businesses continued to benefit from common Alibaba technologies, merchant services, payment infrastructure, logistics relationships and promotional events. Taobao also became increasingly social. Alibaba’s investment in Sina Weibo in 2013 supported efforts to connect social content with product discovery and shopping traffic. The platform developed content feeds, merchant publishing, influencer activity and later livestream commerce. Taobao Live, launched as part of Alibaba’s livestreaming strategy in 2018, gave retailers and hosts a highly interactive sales channel. Demonstrations, real-time questions, limited-time offers and personality-driven broadcasts turned shopping into a form of entertainment. Rural livestreaming programs helped farmers and rural merchants reach urban consumers, while Taobao villages demonstrated how concentrated online selling could reshape local production and employment. Platform governance expanded in parallel. Taobao created formal rules covering user access, seller obligations, consumer protection and dispute resolution. Its public-jury mechanism recruited experienced users to review selected disputes, while later tools such as Golden Cudgel gave qualified merchants limited ability to challenge or remove demonstrably malicious reviews, subject to platform monitoring. These systems reflected Taobao’s attempt to govern a massive marketplace through a mixture of automated risk controls, community participation, employee review and contractual enforcement. The marketplace has also been used for institutional transactions. Chinese courts, customs offices, banks and asset-management bodies have operated storefronts or auction channels for seized property, distressed assets and other goods. This expanded the meaning of Taobao from a private shopping site into a general-purpose digital market infrastructure. In the 2020s, Taobao remained central to Alibaba’s China commerce strategy while facing competition from JD.com, Pinduoduo, Douyin commerce, Kuaishou and other content-led or price-led platforms. Alibaba emphasized price competitiveness, consumer retention, merchant support, membership benefits, livestreaming, logistics integration and artificial intelligence. In 2023, Eddie Wu assumed leadership of Taobao and Tmall Group. In November 2024, Alibaba announced a broader E-commerce Business Group combining domestic and international e-commerce resources, including Taobao, under Fan Jiang. By 2025 and 2026, Alibaba’s public strategy continued to identify user growth, AI-enabled shopping and faster fulfillment as important priorities. Taobao’s core identity nevertheless remained consistent: a broad, mobile-first marketplace that gives consumers access to an unusually large assortment while providing relatively low-barrier digital distribution for merchants.

The service formed part of Alibaba’s broader effort to turn marketplace data into tools for merchant productivity and competition.
Shopping search · 2010
eTao
eTao was introduced as a shopping search and comparison service associated with Taobao. It was designed to help consumers compare products and prices across Taobao, Tmall and selected other Chinese e-commerce websites. Its launch reflected Alibaba’s attempt to control not only the transaction but also the product-discovery and comparison stages of online shopping.
Seller reputation management · 2019
Golden Cudgel
Golden Cudgel is a controlled review-management mechanism introduced for qualifying sellers. After passing platform requirements, sellers may remove a limited number of reviews believed to be malicious, but they must provide evidence and remain subject to later platform checks. Repeated misuse can result in loss of access to the tool. The mechanism addresses the practical difficulty of managing reputation disputes at marketplace scale.
Controversies
2020
Jiang Fan's family and social media controversy sparks reputational crisis and internal punishment
In April 2020, then president of Taobao and Tmall Jiang Fan sparked a serious public opinion crisis due to improper handling of family issues. Alibaba revoked his partner status, issued him a demerit, demoted him, and canceled his previous-year award. The company's investigation also stated that he had no improper benefit transfer in relation to the investment in Ruhnn E-commerce and Zhang Dayi's store. This entry retains the investigation conclusion and does not treat online allegations about a private relationship as established illegality.
2020
Taobao responds to concerns over mask listings
Taobao said it had checked the relevant shops after online users exposed allegedly false claims and unstable mask prices. It said the relevant products had been taken down and that it would help consumers obtain refunds.

Court ordered compensation to Taobao in a malicious-refund case
The Hangzhou Internet Court ruled that Zhou Xiaoli's refund activity abused Taobao platform membership rights and disrupted its normal operations, and ordered her to pay Taobao 1 yuan in damages plus 10,000 yuan in reasonable expenses, including lawyer fees.
2018
Artificial or disputed customer reviews
Taobao’s feedback system has been criticized because reviews may be fabricated, purchased, posted by competitors or influenced through seller-consumer negotiations. The platform has introduced review controls and seller tools, but reputation manipulation remains a structural risk for large marketplaces.
2015
Regulatory criticism over counterfeit listings and platform controls
Chinese regulators publicly scrutinized Alibaba’s marketplace controls and the prevalence of counterfeit products and questionable listings. The episode intensified pressure on Taobao to improve merchant governance, product verification, enforcement and transparency.
2011
Counterfeit-goods and merchant-quality criticism
Taobao faced sustained criticism over counterfeit or infringing goods sold by third-party merchants. The issue reflected the difficulty of policing a very large open marketplace and led to continuing investment in seller verification, automated monitoring, takedown procedures and cooperation with rights holders and law enforcement.
