Overview
Synduality is a Japanese mixed-media science-fiction project created within the Bandai Namco Group. Rather than functioning as a conventional consumer-goods label, it is an entertainment franchise designed to connect several forms of storytelling and interactive media. Its central setting is a post-apocalyptic future in which humanity survives after a catastrophe known as the Tears of the New Moon. The disaster produces lethal blue rain, causes widespread flooding, and transforms animals and plants into dangerous giant creatures called Enders. Survivors live in underground settlements known as Nests or on the hazardous surface, where independent Drifters use heavily armed vehicles called Cradle Coffins to collect the energy resource known as AO Crystals. A defining feature of the franchise is the relationship between humans and Magus androids. Magi are humanoid artificial intelligences equipped with human-like emotions and specialized abilities. They serve as companions, navigators, combat partners, and sources of information, while the franchise repeatedly explores the tension between treating artificial beings as tools and recognizing them as individuals. This human–AI relationship is reflected in the name Synduality, which combines ideas associated with partnership and dual existence. The project was publicly developed as a cross-media property rather than as a single game or television series. Its best-known animated entry is Synduality: Noir, an Eight Bit television anime following the young Drifter Kanata and the amnesiac Magus Noir. The series uses the setting's ruined landscapes, Nest communities, Cradle Coffin battles, and competing views of Magus autonomy to introduce the franchise's world and characters. It aired in two cours between July 2023 and March 2024 and was distributed internationally through Disney+, Star+, and Hulu in designated markets. Synduality also expanded through prose and manga. Synduality: Kaleido was serialized in Monthly Hobby Japan, while Synduality: Ellie received both a manga serialization in Monthly Comic Alive and a light-novel edition under Media Factory's MF Bunko J imprint. Additional world-building appeared in Hajimari no Ao Synduality: Roots, a science-fiction light novel published by Tokyo Sogensha's Sogen SF Bunko imprint. The franchise's principal interactive release is Synduality: Echo of Ada, a third-person shooter and action role-playing game developed by Game Studio and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Released for Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in January 2025, the game places players in the role of Drifters operating with Magus partners in the dangerous surface world. Through its combination of exploration, resource collection, combat, and character partnership, Echo of Ada provides the most direct playable expression of Synduality's setting. Synduality's positioning is therefore built around coordinated storytelling across anime, games, publishing, character merchandise, and related fan experiences. The franchise emphasizes post-apocalyptic adventure, mechanized combat, android companionship, and a visually identifiable science-fiction world. Publicly available reference material establishes the project and its media releases, but does not disclose a standalone corporate structure, separate headquarters, founding date, financial performance, or an independently listed entity. The brand remains active through its official project site and the continuing availability of its media properties.
History
Synduality emerged as a Bandai Namco Group mixed-media science-fiction project built around a shared post-apocalyptic universe. Its premise is set more than a century after the Tears of the New Moon, a global catastrophe associated with lethal blue rain, flooding, and the appearance of giant hostile organisms called Enders. Human survivors eventually establish protected underground communities, while other groups remain on the surface and make a living recovering AO Crystals. The setting's social and technological foundation is the partnership between Drifters and Magi, humanoid artificial intelligences designed to display human-like emotions and to support the operation of Cradle Coffins. The fictional history describes the construction of Amasia, a large underground city protected by a canopy that blocks the deadly rain. Amasia's society is organized around tightly controlled AO energy and advanced android technology. In 2210, the first Cradle Coffins equipped with Magus systems are completed. The later collapse of Amasia in 2222 scatters people into smaller Nests and exposes formerly restricted weapons and technologies. This breakdown creates the social role of the Drifter: an independent surface operator who battles Enders, explores ruins, and searches for valuable AO Crystals. The historical framework gives the franchise a basis for both conventional military action and stories about social reconstruction. The first major screen expression of the project was Synduality: Noir. Produced by Eight Bit, the anime was announced in 2022 and directed by Yusuke Yamamoto. Its scripts were written by Takashi Aoshima from a story draft by Hajime Kamoshida, with character designs for animation by Kenichiro Katsura and music by Masato Nakayama. The first cour aired in Japan from July to September 2023. A second cour was announced at Tokyo Game Show in September 2023 and aired from January to March 2024. The series follows Kanata, an inexperienced Drifter, and Noir, a Type Zero Magus whose apparent memory loss conceals a more complicated identity involving Mystere. Their relationship provides the emotional center of the anime and illustrates the franchise's recurring question of whether Magi should be treated as equipment, companions, or autonomous persons. Noir is supported by a broad ensemble. Kanata works under the experienced Drifter Tokio, while childhood friend Ellie and her Magus Ange represent another form of human–Magus partnership. Ciel introduces music, espionage, and questions about identity; the Ideal faction, led by Weisheit Blaurecht and represented in the field by Macht, embodies a more instrumental view of artificial intelligence. Other characters, including Claudia and Flamme, expand the world beyond a simple conflict between good and evil by showing how independent Drifters negotiate survival, trust, and economic opportunity. Publishing activity extended the setting beyond the anime. Dai Hatano's Synduality: Kaleido was serialized in Monthly Hobby Japan from 2023 into 2024. Synduality: Ellie was developed as both a manga by Hiroji Mishima with a screenplay by Masaru Hatano and a light novel written by Hatano and illustrated by Yo Midorikawa. A further light novel, Hajimari no Ao Synduality: Roots, was written by Yuya Takashima and illustrated by neco. These works demonstrate the project's use of different formats to explore parallel characters and perspectives within the same universe. The interactive centerpiece is Synduality: Echo of Ada. Developed by Game Studio and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, it was released in January 2025 for Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game translates the setting's Drifter premise into a playable loop involving surface operations, combat against Enders, resource gathering, and cooperation with a Magus partner. In strategic terms, the game gives Synduality a durable platform beyond the broadcast life of the anime and provides the franchise with a direct channel to console and PC audiences. Synduality's development is best understood as franchise construction: anime establishes characters and tone, publishing broadens the narrative universe, and Echo of Ada makes the world's central occupation playable. The available references do not identify a separate Synduality corporation, independent executives, public listing, headquarters, or financial results. Ownership and production are instead associated at project level with the Bandai Namco Group and its entertainment businesses.
