Overview
SVOLT Energy Technology Co., Ltd., commonly known as SVOLT, is a Chinese battery company focused on lithium-ion cells, modules, packs, and energy-storage systems. The company originated inside Great Wall Motor, where battery research began as a development project in 2012. It became a production-oriented business unit in December 2016, was separated into a Great Wall division in February 2018, and was transferred later that year to Baoding Ruimao, a Great Wall holding company, as a subsidiary. SVOLT therefore developed as a dedicated battery specialist while retaining a close corporate relationship with Great Wall Motor and its vehicle brands. The company is headquartered in Changzhou's Jintan District in Jiangsu Province. It has also developed overseas activity, including a joint-venture facility with Banpu Next in Chonburi, Thailand. That plant began volume production in February 2024 and was intended to supply vehicle production in Thailand, including vehicles associated with Great Wall Motor and Neta. SVOLT's technology portfolio includes prismatic lithium-ion cells, lithium-iron-phosphate and nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistries, battery modules and packs, and integrated pack architectures. Its Short Blade battery line, introduced in 2021, uses elongated prismatic cells and high-speed stacking processes. The architecture was designed to improve packaging and production efficiency while offering charging-rate options suited to electrified vehicles. In 2022, the company introduced Dragonscale Armor, a pack-structure technology intended to increase volumetric utilization and improve the integration of prismatic cells. SVOLT has also promoted cobalt-free high-nickel batteries, seeking to reduce dependence on cobalt while retaining high energy density. In October 2024, SVOLT announced that it would close its European headquarters in Frankfurt and end European operations by January 2025, while stopping construction work on the proposed factories. History
SVOLT began as a battery-development project within Great Wall Motor in 2012. Great Wall made the activity a business unit in December 2016 as battery production started. In February 2018, the activity was separated into a dedicated division under Great Wall. In October of the same year, it was transferred to Baoding Ruimao, a Great Wall holding company, and operated as a separate battery subsidiary under the SVOLT name. The company expanded from supplying battery technology for affiliated vehicle operations toward becoming a broader power-battery and energy-storage manufacturer.
