Overview
Sun Microsystems was an American technology company that operated from 1982 until its acquisition by Oracle in 2010. It developed and sold workstations, servers, storage systems, operating systems, developer tools, middleware, database products, and information-technology services. The company became one of Silicon Valley's most influential computing businesses by combining Unix-based systems, proprietary RISC processors, advanced networking, and a strong commitment to open systems. Sun originated in the Stanford University environment. Andy Bechtolsheim designed the first Sun workstation while he was a graduate student, initially as a powerful graphics workstation for the Stanford University Network project. Scott McNealy, Vinod Khosla, and Bechtolsheim incorporated the company in February 1982, and Bill Joy, a principal developer of Berkeley Software Distribution, joined soon afterward. The name Sun came from the initials of Stanford University Network. Sun was profitable from its first quarter and quickly established itself as a specialist in engineering and technical workstations. During the 1980s, Sun systems used Motorola 68000-family processors and Unix software, especially SunOS, and competed in computer-aided design, scientific computing, financial services, and other technical markets. The company later developed the SPARC instruction-set architecture and used it across a broad range of workstations and servers. Its machines became prominent in universities, telecommunications companies, financial institutions, internet businesses, and large corporate data centers. Sun also contributed to the spread of networked and client-server computing, thin-client architectures, and distributed file systems. Sun's most consequential software projects included the Solaris operating system, the Network File System, and Java. Java was introduced as a platform intended to let software run across different kinds of hardware and operating systems. Its influence extended from enterprise applications and web servers to mobile and embedded devices. Sun also promoted open-source development, releasing or sponsoring projects such as OpenOffice.org and acquiring MySQL AB in 2008. Other important acquisitions included StorageTek, Innotek, SeeBeyond, NetBeans, Star Division, and VirtualBox developer Innotek. The dot-com boom created strong demand for Sun's high-end servers, but the company expanded its workforce, manufacturing capacity, and spending on the assumption that internet-sector demand would remain elevated. After the bubble burst in 2000, customers failed, hardware orders declined, and Sun experienced successive losses, layoffs, restructurings, and management changes. It redirected processor development toward multithreading and multiprocessing, introduced the Sun Grid utility-computing service, expanded storage and identity-management software, and sought closer integration of hardware and software. Sun remained a major enterprise technology vendor but struggled with falling hardware margins, changing customer purchasing patterns, and competition from lower-cost x86 systems and Linux. In 2009 Oracle announced an agreement to acquire Sun. The transaction attracted regulatory scrutiny, particularly concerning MySQL and database competition, but was approved by the European Commission in January 2010 and completed on January 27, 2010. Sun's corporate identity subsequently disappeared into Oracle, although Oracle continued to develop and sell technologies associated with Sun, including Solaris, SPARC, Java, and selected storage and systems products.
History
Sun Microsystems emerged from Stanford University and the early Silicon Valley workstation market. Andy Bechtolsheim designed the prototype Sun-1 workstation while working as a graduate student, using a Motorola 68000 processor and hardware assembled from available university and local supplies. Scott McNealy, Vinod Khosla, and Bechtolsheim founded Sun on February 24, 1982; Bill Joy joined soon afterward and brought deep expertise in Berkeley Unix and software systems. The company initially sold Unix workstations aimed at engineering, computer-aided design, scientific research, and financial applications. Sun's systems were distinguished by strong graphics, networking, virtual-memory support, and compatibility with BSD-derived Unix. By 1983, the company had become a visible workstation competitor, and by the end of the decade it was widely regarded as a leader in the sector. Its early products used Motorola processors, but Sun increasingly differentiated itself through its own SPARC RISC architecture and the SunOS operating system. Sun's business expanded from workstations into servers, storage, operating systems, networking, and software. Solaris succeeded SunOS as the company's principal enterprise Unix platform. NFS became a widely used method for sharing files across networked systems. Sun also supported the development of thin clients, distributed computing, and network-centric architectures. Java was Sun's most globally influential software initiative. Developed initially for embedded and consumer devices, Java became a cross-platform programming language and runtime environment for enterprise applications, web services, and numerous other software categories. Sun used Java to promote a broader strategy in which applications and services would be less dependent on any one hardware platform. Its public image also emphasized open standards and open systems, even while much of its hardware and operating-system portfolio remained proprietary. Sun went public in 1986 and prospered during the expansion of Unix workstations and, later, the commercial internet. During the dot-com boom, demand for high-end servers rose sharply and Sun's share price reached exceptionally high levels. The company invested heavily in employees, facilities, and capacity. When the bubble collapsed in 2000, many internet start-ups failed or reduced infrastructure purchases, causing a severe decline in Sun's hardware sales. Sun responded through layoffs, factory consolidation, cost reductions, and changes in product strategy. After the crash, Sun emphasized multithreaded and multiprocessor designs such as the UltraSPARC T1, expanded its use of AMD Opteron and Intel Xeon systems, and entered utility computing with Sun Grid. It also pursued a software and storage acquisition program. StorageTek strengthened its storage position, SeeBeyond added service-oriented integration software, Waveset expanded identity management, and Innotek brought VirtualBox virtualization technology. The 2008 acquisition of MySQL AB reinforced Sun's open-source strategy and gave the company a major database asset. Despite these initiatives, Sun faced persistent pressure from commodity x86 hardware, Linux, falling prices, and the changing economics of enterprise infrastructure. Revenue and profitability weakened during the 2007–2008 period, and the company announced substantial workforce reductions. Oracle's 2009 offer provided a route to combine Sun's servers, storage, Solaris, Java, and database assets with Oracle's enterprise software business. Regulatory authorities examined the deal, particularly the competitive significance of MySQL, before approval. The transaction closed on January 27, 2010. Sun ceased to exist as an independent corporation, while Oracle retained and integrated several of its technologies and product lines.
