Overview
Sulzer is a Swiss industrial engineering and equipment group headquartered in Winterthur. Its origins date to 1775, when Salomon Sulzer-Bernet established an iron foundry and manufacturing business in Winterthur. The company later became associated with the Sulzer family and developed from a local foundry into an internationally active engineering enterprise. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it built capabilities in steam engines, boilers, turbines, diesel engines, pumps, and other heavy industrial machinery. The modern Sulzer portfolio is centered on technologies that move, separate, mix, and process fluids. Its principal activities include pumping equipment and systems, agitators and mixers, separation and filtration equipment, static mixing, mass-transfer technology, and industrial services. These products are used in water and wastewater treatment, oil and gas, chemicals, petrochemicals, power generation, mining, pulp and paper, food and beverage, and other process industries. Sulzer also supplies maintenance, repair, refurbishment, spare parts, and field services, giving the business a substantial recurring-services component alongside equipment sales. Sulzer has reorganized its portfolio repeatedly. It divested or separated several businesses that were no longer central to its industrial-flow strategy, while adding specialist companies in pumps, separation, mixing, and wastewater technology. A notable transaction was the acquisition of Ensival Moret in 2017, which strengthened Sulzer's portfolio of industrial pumps. In 2021, Sulzer acquired Nordic Water, a Swedish provider of water and wastewater treatment equipment, reinforcing its water-related activities. The group has also developed specialist technologies through its Chemtech, Flow Equipment, Services, and Applicator businesses. The brand is best understood as an engineering and technology platform rather than a consumer-facing product label. Its customers generally purchase complex equipment and lifecycle support for large industrial facilities, municipal utilities, and infrastructure projects. Sulzer's competitive proposition combines application engineering, global manufacturing and service coverage, process know-how, and the ability to integrate equipment into demanding fluid-handling systems. Sulzer is publicly traded on the SIX Swiss Exchange under the symbol SUN. It remains an independent Swiss-headquartered group with operations and service locations around the world. Although the company historically had activities in medical technology through Sulzer Medica, that business was separated from the core group and is not representative of Sulzer's present industrial positioning. The company's current strategic emphasis is on sustainable industrial processes, energy efficiency, water treatment, resource recovery, and services that extend the operating life of industrial assets.
History
Sulzer traces its history to 1775, when Salomon Sulzer-Bernet founded an iron foundry in Winterthur. The enterprise expanded under later generations of the Sulzer family and gradually moved from basic metalworking into engineered machinery. In the nineteenth century it became known for steam engines, boilers, and other industrial equipment. The growth of railways, shipping, manufacturing, and electricity created markets for increasingly sophisticated machines, helping Sulzer develop an international customer base. During the twentieth century, Sulzer was associated with heavy engineering and diesel technology as well as pumps and process equipment. Its diesel-engine activities became particularly important in marine and industrial applications. The group also diversified into medical technology, creating Sulzer Medica as a significant business in orthopedic implants and related products. That diversification later produced one of the most consequential episodes in the company's history. In 2001, Sulzer Medica recalled certain hip and knee components after identifying contamination associated with a manufacturing lubricant. The recall generated patient claims and legal liabilities. Sulzer responded with settlements, provisions, and a strategic separation of the medical-device operations. Sulzer Medica was subsequently renamed Centerpulse and later became part of Zimmer Holdings, while the remaining Sulzer group returned its emphasis to industrial technology. The company subsequently pursued a more focused portfolio. It expanded its pumps and process-equipment activities through acquisitions and divestitures, emphasizing businesses where engineering expertise, installed equipment, and aftermarket services could support long-term customer relationships. Sulzer's operating structure came to include Flow Equipment, Chemtech, Services, and Applicator-related activities, covering pumps, separation, mixing, static mixers, process components, maintenance, and refurbishment. The acquisition of Ensival Moret in 2017 strengthened Sulzer's industrial-pump range. In 2018, the United States imposed sanctions connected with a Russian counterparty in a Sulzer transaction; the matter was resolved through a restructuring that removed the sanctioned ownership interest. Sulzer continued to operate internationally while managing sanctions and compliance requirements. Water and resource efficiency became increasingly important parts of the group's strategy. The acquisition of Nordic Water in 2021 added screening, sedimentation, filtration, and biological-treatment technologies for municipal and industrial water applications. Sulzer also increased its focus on energy efficiency, recycling, carbon management, and services that improve the performance and useful life of industrial assets. In 2022, after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Sulzer announced the sale of its Russian entities in response to the changing sanctions and operating environment. Today, Sulzer is a publicly listed Swiss engineering group. Its identity is rooted in industrial process technology: equipment and services that pump, mix, separate, treat, and maintain fluids and process streams across energy, chemicals, water, infrastructure, and other industries.
