Overview
Stevens Point Brewery is a brewery with a history dating back to 1857, when Frank Wahle and George Ruder established it and brewed the first Point Beer. It is described as one of the oldest, continuously operating breweries in the country. The brewery offers a range of year-round, seasonal, NA brews, and gourmet sodas.
History
Stevens Point Brewery was established in 1857 by Frank Wahle and George Ruder, who brewed the first Point Beer. In 1864, the brewery provided beer to troops during the Civil War. During the 1880s, the brewery began marketing itself as the Stevens Point Brewery. In 1872, Andrew and Jacob Lutz expanded the brewery's capacity by constructing a new stone brewhouse. In 1908, the brewery installed mechanical refrigeration. During Prohibition in 1920, it produced near-beer products and soft drinks. In 1930, Wisconsin was home to more than 80 breweries, most of which went out of business after the Great Depression, but Stevens Point Brewery continued to thrive. In 1930, Felix 'Phil' Shibilski was hired as an accountant; after Charles Schenk died in 1943, Shibilski was promoted to brewery manager. In 1937, the brewery added a large 4-door garage to house its own distribution fleet. In 1970, Calvin Korfmann handed the operation over to Phil Shibilski. That year, Point Special cases were sent out of state for the first time for the Wisconsin exhibit in Washington, DC. In 1973, Point Special was rated the #1 American beer in a taste test.
