Overview
Sogou is a Chinese internet technology company and Tencent subsidiary whose best-known products are the Sogou search engine and Sogou Input Method. The business began inside Sohu as a search project led by Wang Xiaochuan, who had joined Sohu after graduating from Tsinghua University. The Sogou search engine went live in August 2004, initially operating as a separate division rather than as an independent company. Its strategic importance increased after the company developed Sogou Pinyin in 2006. By applying search-engine data and language analysis to keyboard input, Sogou created an input platform that could predict popular words and phrases and became one of the most widely used Chinese input methods on desktop and mobile devices. Sogou’s development was shaped by a series of ownership, financing, and distribution changes. Around 2010, when its search revenue share remained below one percent, Wang Xiaochuan sought outside investment and reached an agreement associated with Alibaba founder Jack Ma. Sohu subsequently reorganized Sogou as a more independent business with a separate profit-and-loss structure and introduced employee stock options. After strong growth, Sohu bought back Ma’s shares in 2012. In 2013, Sogou entered a deeper strategic relationship with Tencent: Tencent invested approximately US$448 million and merged its SoSo search operation into Sogou. This gave Sogou access to Tencent distribution, including QQ and other Tencent products. Sogou later became the default search engine for QQ.com and developed the ability to search WeChat public-account content. The company broadened its portfolio beyond conventional web search. Its search products organized webpages and vertical information across areas such as news, images, music, video, maps, and other categories. Search advertising became its principal commercial engine, accounting for more than 90 percent of reported revenue in the period described in the company’s public materials. Sogou also developed a browser, voice-recognition systems, translation tools, a lip-reading system, child-oriented GPS smartwatches, and portable translation hardware. Its artificial-intelligence work included speech recognition, machine translation, natural-language processing, and an AI-generated news-anchor project conducted with Xinhua News Agency. Sogou became a public company on the New York Stock Exchange on November 9, 2017, under the symbol SOGO. The offering was presented as a way to support continued investment in artificial intelligence and related technologies. In 2020, Tencent proposed acquiring Sogou for approximately US$2.1 billion. The transaction was subsequently completed, and Sogou was taken private and delisted in 2021. The brand continues as part of Tencent’s ecosystem, with its operations and technologies connected to Tencent products and services. Its Beijing offices are near Tsinghua University, and the company has also maintained offices in Chengdu and a research-and-development center in Guangzhou. Sogou’s present identity is therefore that of a Tencent-owned Chinese search, language-input, and AI technology brand rather than an independently listed public company.
History
Sogou originated as a search-engine project inside Sohu. After joining Sohu, Tsinghua graduate Wang Xiaochuan led a small team that developed the service. The Sogou search engine launched on August 3, 2004, as a distinct Sohu division. The name combines the Chinese characters commonly rendered as “search dog,” reflecting the service’s search-oriented identity. In 2006, Sogou introduced Sogou Pinyin, a Chinese input method that used analysis of internet language and frequently used expressions to improve word prediction. The product became central to the company’s identity and helped differentiate Sogou from general search competitors. In 2007, the company established a search-related curriculum with Tsinghua University, linking recruitment, technical training, and research. That year, Sogou also won a patent-infringement case concerning an input method against Google, according to the referenced account. Sogou launched its browser in 2008; the browser later adopted a dual-engine architecture using WebKit and Internet Explorer’s Trident engine and connected to cloud-based services intended to identify malicious websites and software. Sogou’s early search position was weak. By 2010, its search-revenue share was reported as below one percent. Wang Xiaochuan pursued external investment and met Jack Ma, leading to an arrangement in which Sohu agreed to make Sogou more organizationally independent, with a separate profit-and-loss line and employee stock options. Growth subsequently accelerated. In 2012, Sohu repurchased shares associated with Ma’s investment. In 2013, Sogou reached a strategic agreement with Tencent. Tencent invested approximately US$448 million, and its SoSo search operation was combined with Sogou. The relationship gave Sogou access to Tencent distribution and platform data. By 2014, Sogou was the default search engine for QQ.com and had become the only search engine described in the source as able to search WeChat public-account content. The company reported profitability by early 2015. Sogou continued expanding into language and artificial-intelligence technologies. It began developing voice recognition in 2011 and later demonstrated Chinese-English voice translation. In 2016, it partnered with Microsoft Bing for English-language search results and Chinese translation, and it announced a US$30 million donation and joint initiative with Tsinghua University to support an artificial-intelligence institute. In 2017, Sogou introduced or demonstrated additional AI capabilities, including a lip-reading system, while its Internet-of-Things subsidiary sold child-focused GPS smartwatches. The company launched a Travel Translator and Travel Pen in March 2018, with the products reportedly selling out on their first day. It also worked with Xinhua News Agency on an AI-generated news anchor. The company entered the public markets in November 2017, listing on the New York Stock Exchange as SOGO. Public-company disclosures described search advertising as the dominant revenue source and emphasized investment in AI. Sogou also pursued investments and partnerships outside its core search products, including ownership of the multilingual Typany keyboard application, investment participation in Zhihu financing rounds, and seed funding for Snack Videos, an AI-oriented short-form learning application. In 2020, Tencent proposed buying Sogou for approximately US$2.1 billion. The transaction was completed in 2021, after which Sogou became a Tencent subsidiary and its public listing ended.
