Sellier & Bellot is a Czech manufacturer of firearms ammunition headquartered in Vlašim. Sellier & Bellot was established on 5 August 1825 in Prague by Louis Sellier, a businessman of German and French background, after he received a request connected with the Austrian imperial military system to manufacture percussion caps for infantry firearms. Jean Maria Nicolaus Bellot, also from France, later joined Sellier and helped the enterprise expand. The company became an early specialist in ignition components, and its production grew rapidly. It reportedly made more than 60 million percussion caps in 1830 and reached 156 million in 1837. Expansion outside Prague began early. A subsidiary plant was founded in Schönebeck in 1829. In 1870, the company moved into cartridge manufacturing, producing rimfire, pin-fire, and centerfire types. Within several years, annual cartridge output had grown to approximately ten million rounds. After Louis Sellier's death, his heirs retained an interest in the business. In 1872, they persuaded Jean Bellot to leave management and sell his share. Czech entrepreneur Martin Hála subsequently became involved and reorganized the factory as a joint-stock company. The company continued building an international network. A plant in Riga was established in 1884 to serve demand for percussion caps in the Russian and Scandinavian regions. Sellier & Bellot registered its first trademark in Prague in 1893. Hunting cartridge cases and hunting cartridges became part of the portfolio in 1895, alongside copper primers used in blasting and ammunition production. The business therefore developed both commercial shooting products and industrial energetic-material applications. World War I shifted the company's priorities toward military supply. Commercial ammunition production was reduced while capacity was dedicated to rifle and handgun cartridges for the army. A 9 mm Steyr cartridge was developed and placed into serial production during this period. After Czechoslovakia became independent in 1918, Sellier & Bellot became an important supplier of handgun ammunition to the country's army and police. At the same time, the company continued expanding its hunting and competition-shooting products and entered Asian and South American markets. Work associated with silver azide and industrial detonators also increased its role beyond conventional sporting ammunition. In 1936, the company relocated from Prague to Vlašim, which remains its principal location. Following the political changes after the Second World War, Sellier & Bellot was nationalized in 1945 as part of Czechoslovakia's state monopoly over military and commercial ammunition. Its catalog expanded to approximately forty rifle-caliber types, ten pistol-caliber types, and twenty revolver-caliber types. Shotgun production covered gauges from .410 to 12 gauge. Military production included 7.62×45, 7.62×39, and 7.62×54R cartridges. Export activity was significant, with the historical account reporting that roughly seventy percent of output was exported. The postwar company also diversified into engineering. It started manufacturing antifriction bearings in 1964, and production of packaging machines began through a subsidiary in 1965. In 1972, the company began manufacturing cartridges according to applicable C.I.P. standards, aligning its commercial ammunition with recognized European technical requirements. After the transition away from state ownership, Sellier & Bellot was transformed into Sellier & Bellot a.s. in 1992.
