SAP SuccessFactors
SAP's cloud-based human capital management suite for managing the employee lifecycle.
Last updated August 21, 2026
Overview
SAP SuccessFactors is a cloud-based human capital management (HCM) software suite operated by SAP SE. Its roots are in SuccessFactors, a software company founded in 2001 by Lars Dalgaard to provide web-based tools for improving employee performance and organizational effectiveness. The company became one of the early prominent providers of software-as-a-service applications for human resources, placing performance, goals, talent, and workforce processes in an online environment rather than relying primarily on locally installed enterprise software. SuccessFactors expanded its capabilities through a series of acquisitions. These included Infohrm, an Australian HR analytics business acquired in 2010; CubeTree, a social software company; YouCalc, a Danish cloud analytics provider; Jambok, a social learning and knowledge-sharing platform; Plateau, an established learning-management-system provider; and Jobs2Web, a recruiting and sourcing technology company. The acquisitions broadened the product scope from performance management into analytics, collaboration, learning, recruiting, and workforce planning. The company also promoted cloud-based analysis through its Calculator in the Cloud initiative, which was designed to help business users analyze real-time data and derive predictive insights. SuccessFactors became a public company in November 2007, when its shares began trading on the NASDAQ Global Market under the symbol SFSF. In July 2008, the company moved its listing to the New York Stock Exchange and related international exchange venues. Its public-company period helped finance expansion before SAP agreed to acquire it in December 2011. The transaction was completed on February 16, 2012. SAP initially presented the business as an independent operation under the name “SuccessFactors, an SAP company,” while retaining the product's cloud orientation and development identity. It was subsequently rebranded as SAP SuccessFactors. The suite is aimed primarily at medium-sized and large organizations that need integrated HR administration, talent management, workforce analytics, and employee-experience capabilities. Its major areas include Employee Central for core HR and employee data; Performance & Goals for objectives, reviews, and continuous performance processes; Compensation for salary and incentive planning; Learning for training administration and development; Recruiting for hiring workflows; and related workforce analytics and succession capabilities. The products are designed to work with SAP's broader enterprise software environment, although the suite can also be used by organizations with heterogeneous technology estates. In October 2013, SuccessFactors opened its platform as part of the SAP Cloud Platform, supporting a wider ecosystem of applications and partners. At SAP's SAPPHIRE conference in 2014, partner applications including an Accenture audit and compliance tool and EnterpriseAlumni were showcased in the SAP ecosystem. SAP stated in January 2022 that SuccessFactors served 12,000 customers and 191 million users across more than 200 countries. The brand remains an active SAP cloud-product portfolio rather than a separately listed company.
History
SuccessFactors was founded in 2001 by Lars Dalgaard as a specialist provider of web-based human resources software. Its early proposition centered on helping organizations set employee objectives, evaluate performance, and connect individual work with broader business goals. This placed the company within the early software-as-a-service movement, when many enterprise applications were shifting from installed systems toward browser-accessible services delivered from a provider's infrastructure. The company broadened its portfolio through acquisitions. Infohrm added HR analytics capabilities, while CubeTree contributed social and collaborative software. YouCalc brought cloud-based analytics and was associated with the company's Calculator in the Cloud initiative, which sought to let business users work with real-time data for analysis and prediction. Jambok extended the portfolio into social learning and knowledge sharing. Plateau added a mature learning-management platform, giving SuccessFactors a stronger position in corporate training. Jobs2Web added recruiting and sourcing technology. Together, these transactions helped turn SuccessFactors from a performance-management specialist into a broader HCM platform. SuccessFactors entered the public markets in November 2007 on the NASDAQ Global Market under the symbol SFSF. In July 2008, it moved its listing to the New York Stock Exchange and related international exchange venues. The public-company period coincided with continued product expansion and the development of a cloud-native alternative to traditional licensed HR software. On December 3, 2011, SAP and SuccessFactors announced that SAP America had entered into an agreement to acquire all outstanding common shares of SuccessFactors. The proposed structure allowed SuccessFactors to continue operating with a degree of independence while the transaction was completed. The acquisition closed on February 16, 2012. SAP initially used the name “SuccessFactors, an SAP company,” and later standardized the identity as SAP SuccessFactors. The transaction gave SAP a major cloud HCM platform and gave SuccessFactors access to SAP's global enterprise customer base, technology resources, and integration ecosystem. In October 2013, the platform was opened as part of SAP Cloud Platform. This supported a broader partner ecosystem and allowed other applications to connect with or extend SuccessFactors capabilities. At the 2014 SAPPHIRE conference, partner solutions such as an Accenture audit and compliance tool and EnterpriseAlumni were presented in the SAP ecosystem. The current SAP SuccessFactors portfolio covers core HR, talent, recruiting, learning, compensation, performance, workforce analytics, and related employee-experience processes. Employee Central is the central employee-record and core-HR offering, while other modules support the employee lifecycle from recruiting and onboarding through development, performance, compensation, succession, and workforce planning. SAP reported in January 2022 that the platform had 12,000 customers and 191 million users in more than 200 countries. SuccessFactors therefore operates today as an SAP-owned enterprise SaaS brand rather than as an independent public company.
