Overview
Ruston & Hornsby was a major British engineering company based in Lincoln, England. The company was formally created in 1918 through the merger of Ruston, Proctor and Company of Lincoln with Richard Hornsby & Sons of Grantham. Its roots, however, extended back to 1840, when Proctor & Burton began operating as a millwright and engineering business. Over time, the enterprise developed into one of Britain's important manufacturers of industrial machinery, engines, locomotives, agricultural equipment, and energy systems. Ruston & Hornsby's early reputation rested on steam machinery and heavy oil engines. The predecessor company built steam locomotives from the 1860s, including tank engines supplied to British railways, contractors, and overseas customers. Richard Hornsby & Sons brought particular expertise in heavy-oil engines and had begun producing such engines before the commercial emergence of the Diesel engine. After the 1918 merger, the combined company manufactured engines ranging from small petrol and diesel units to large industrial and marine engines. The company also made a major contribution to British wartime production. During the First World War, its predecessor operations produced aircraft and aero-engines, including large numbers of Sopwith Camel aircraft, Sopwith 1½ Strutters, and Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2 aircraft. The business also participated in early tank production. During the Second World War, Ruston & Hornsby's wider industrial group supported military production, including Matilda II tanks at the Grantham site and diesel engines for naval landing craft through its Paxman interests. After the First World War, the company briefly entered the automobile market. The Ruston-Hornsby car was a technically substantial but expensive vehicle, offered with large four- and six-cylinder engines. Its weight and price limited demand, and production between 1919 and 1924 remained small compared with mass-market automobile manufacturers. The automobile venture was not continued, while the company's core engine and industrial-equipment businesses remained central to its identity. Ruston & Hornsby began manufacturing diesel locomotives in 1931 and continued in that field until 1967. It became especially well known for compact and medium-sized locomotives used in industrial plants, quarries, docks, construction sites, mines, and narrow-gauge systems. A particularly important later development was the company's move into gas turbines. Gas-turbine production began in 1952, supported by engineering leadership associated with Bob Feilden and later specialists such as Waheeb Rizk. Ruston developed a range of industrial turbines, including the TA, TB, TD, Typhoon, Tornado, Tempest, and Cyclone families. These products were used for electricity generation, mechanical drive, combined heat and power, pipeline compression, industrial facilities, and emergency power. The company supplied turbines internationally and was an early participant in projects using sewage gas, refinery waste heat, and North Sea gas. Ruston & Hornsby expanded through investments and associated companies. Its interests included Paxman, the Colchester diesel-engine manufacturer, and Aveling-Barford, formed in 1934 from Aveling & Porter and Barford & Perkins. In November 1966, Ruston & Hornsby was acquired by English Electric, becoming part of a larger British electrical and engineering group. History
Ruston & Hornsby's corporate history began with Proctor & Burton, founded in Lincoln in 1840 as a millwright and engineering concern. Joseph Ruston joined the firm in 1857, producing the name Ruston, Proctor and Company. The business built agricultural steam equipment, portable engines, steam rollers, and locomotives. From the 1860s it produced tank locomotives, including engines for British railway customers, contractors, and overseas buyers. Its locomotive work established an enduring connection with industrial and narrow-gauge railways. The other half of the eventual merger was Richard Hornsby & Sons of Grantham. Hornsby had developed substantial expertise in heavy-oil engines and began producing them in 1891, before Diesel engines achieved commercial prominence. On 11 September 1918, Ruston, Proctor and Company merged with Richard Hornsby & Sons to create Ruston & Hornsby Ltd. The new company combined steam, internal-combustion, locomotive, and heavy-engine capabilities. During the First World War, the predecessor business became an important military manufacturer. It produced aircraft, aero-engines, and early tanks, including large quantities of Sopwith Camel aircraft. After the war, the company attempted to broaden its activities further through the Ruston-Hornsby automobile. The car was well engineered but heavy and expensive, and only about 1,500 examples were built between 1919 and 1924. The company also supported a planned worker housing development at Swanpool near Lincoln, although financial difficulties prevented the original large-scale plan from being completed. Ruston & Hornsby returned its emphasis to industrial equipment. It manufactured petrol, oil, and diesel engines for land and marine use, as well as steam machinery and construction equipment. Diesel locomotive production started in 1931 and continued until 1967. The company became especially recognized for compact industrial locomotives used by factories, mines, ports, contractors, and other private operators. During the Second World War, its wider group supported British defense production. Paxman, in which Ruston & Hornsby held a controlling interest from 1940, supplied thousands of diesel engines for landing craft, while the Grantham works produced Matilda II tanks. The postwar period brought a strategic shift toward gas turbines. Production began in 1952, and the Lincoln works developed turbines for electricity generation, mechanical drive, pipeline compression, and combined heat and power. Ruston was involved in experimental marine propulsion, sewage-gas generation at Beckton, refinery-based power schemes, and installations for industrial and public-sector customers around the world. Its turbine families included the TA, TB, TD, Typhoon, Tornado, Tempest, and Cyclone ranges. The business also introduced dry-low-emission combustion technology during the 1990s. The company expanded its industrial group through associations with Paxman, Bergius-Kelvin, Davey, Alfred Wiseman Gears, and Aveling-Barford. In 1966 English Electric acquired Ruston & Hornsby. Afterward, diesel-engine production was reorganized among English Electric facilities, while the Lincoln works concentrated increasingly on turbines. English Electric was acquired by GEC in 1968. The turbine operation later passed through GEC-Alsthom and Alstom, becoming known in different periods as Ruston Gas Turbines, European Gas Turbines, and Alstom Gas Turbines. In 2003, Alstom sold its gas-turbine division to Siemens. The Lincoln operation became part of Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery, preserving an industrial presence at the former Ruston site even though the original company no longer existed as an independent group. Diesel-related businesses and technologies followed separate successor paths, including MAN Energy Solutions' support for certain Ruston-origin engines.
