REC Silicon has over 40 years in the industry. In 1983-1984, Union Carbide Corporation constructed a facility (Silicon I) in Moses Lake, Washington, producing silane gas and polycrystalline silicon. In 1990, the Moses Lake facility was purchased by Komatsu Ltd., creating Advanced Silicon Materials Inc. (ASiMI). In 1996-1998, ASiMI constructed a facility in Butte, Montana (Silicon II). In 2002, Renewable Energy Corporation (REC) entered into a Joint Venture with Komatsu, and the Moses Lake facility became Solar Grade Silicon LLC (SGS).
