Overview
Real3D, Inc. was a United States graphics-hardware company created by Lockheed Martin to commercialize 3D visualization technology developed through aerospace and simulation research. Its technical heritage extended back to General Electric Aerospace and the Project Apollo Visual Docking Simulator, an early full-color computer-generated 3D imaging system. After Martin Marietta and Lockheed merged in 1995, the new defense contractor established Real3D as a vehicle for bringing portions of its graphics expertise into civilian markets. The company's most important commercial relationship was with Sega. Real3D designed graphics hardware for Sega's Model 2 and Model 3 arcade platforms, which powered a large number of high-profile 3D arcade games during the mid-1990s. The Model 2 and Model 3 systems became Real3D's principal market success and gave the company a significant role in the transition from predominantly 2D arcade technology to real-time 3D graphics. The hardware was reportedly used in more than 200,000 Sega arcade systems, making the Sega partnership the defining achievement of the Real3D brand. Real3D also pursued the personal-computer graphics market through a project known internally as Auburn. Working with Intel, Silicon Graphics, and Chips and Technologies, the company adapted related technology for an Intel add-in graphics card. The resulting Intel740 was introduced in 1998 and served partly as a showcase for Intel's Accelerated Graphics Port initiative. History
Real3D grew out of aerospace and simulation work associated with General Electric Aerospace. Its technical lineage included the Project Apollo Visual Docking Simulator, an early system capable of producing full-color computer-generated 3D imagery. GE and its successors developed increasingly sophisticated visualization systems during the 1970s, although the business remained smaller than some competing simulation specialists. General Electric's corporate restructuring eventually affected the organization. Martin Marietta acquired GE Aerospace in 1992, and Martin Marietta later merged with Lockheed in 1995 to form Lockheed Martin. The new company decided to pursue civilian applications for some of its graphics capabilities and established Real3D in January 1995. Rather than remaining focused solely on aerospace visualization, the new company targeted interactive entertainment and personal computing. Real3D formed a relationship with Sega that became the central chapter of its history. It designed 3D graphics hardware for Sega's Model 2 and Model 3 arcade platforms. These systems were deployed widely and became important platforms for 3D arcade games during the 1990s. The scale of the deployment—reported at more than 200,000 systems—made Sega's arcade business substantially more significant to Real3D than its later PC initiative. The transaction did not end all issues associated with the company: 3dfx had brought patent litigation against Real3D, and the claims shifted to Intel after the asset purchase. Intel resolved the matter by selling the relevant intellectual property to 3dfx. Separately, disputes involving Real3D patents drew in ATI and resources formerly associated with Silicon Graphics; those matters ended in a cross-licensing settlement in 2001. Many former employees were recruited by ATI for a new Orlando office. Although Real3D existed for only several years, its Sega arcade hardware gave it a lasting place in the history of commercial real-time 3D graphics.
