Overview
Qianjiang Motorcycle Group, commonly marketed as QJMOTOR, is a Chinese manufacturer of motorcycles, scooters, electric two-wheelers, all-terrain vehicles, and motorcycle engines. The company was founded in 1985 and is headquartered in Wenling, Zhejiang Province. It is described as one of China's largest two-wheeled-vehicle manufacturers and has developed a broad product portfolio spanning commuter scooters, naked and sport motorcycles, adventure and dual-sport models, cruisers, electric vehicles, and off-road vehicles. Qianjiang's domestic business markets the company's own product range under the QJMOTOR name. Its international development has also relied on brand ownership, technical cooperation, distribution agreements, and manufacturing relationships. Since 1999, the company has marketed motorcycles outside China. Its most consequential brand transaction was the acquisition of the Italian Benelli brand in 2005. Qianjiang subsequently invested in Benelli's revival, including an additional investment announced in 2009, while retaining an Italian design and development presence in Pesaro. Benelli products have allowed the wider group to compete in the middleweight and premium-oriented motorcycle segments with a stronger European identity. Geely became Qianjiang's largest shareholder in September 2016. The relationship links Qianjiang to one of China's major automotive groups and has supported the company's efforts to expand product engineering, international distribution, and higher-capacity motorcycle development. Qianjiang has also maintained a joint venture with Marzocchi for motorcycle suspension production in China and has participated in partnerships involving Harley-Davidson and MV Agusta. QJMOTOR's range includes single- and multi-cylinder motorcycles from small-displacement commuter models to large sport, touring, adventure, and cruiser machines. The company has placed particular emphasis on four-cylinder engines and larger-capacity motorcycles. The SRK 600RR, launched in 2020, was presented as China's first four-cylinder motorcycle and used an engine designed by Benelli. Later development included an 800cc four-cylinder engine for the SRK 800RR, a proposed 600cc V-four, and a 1000RR associated with an MV Agusta engine. These projects illustrate the brand's move beyond value-focused commuter products toward technically ambitious performance motorcycles. The company has expanded its branded presence overseas under QJMOTOR. In 2022, it presented the brand at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan. In Europe, Qianjiang arranged an exclusive distribution agreement with SIMA in 2024 for Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, replacing an earlier arrangement with DIP SAS. QJMOTOR also entered the United States market in 2023 with an initial range of 11 models. Its racing and promotional strategy has included sponsorship of Avintia Esponsorama Racing in Moto3 in 2022 and Gresini Racing in Moto2 from the 2023 season. Qianjiang therefore operates as both a large Chinese industrial manufacturer and a multi-brand motorcycle group. Its positioning combines relatively accessible pricing and broad model coverage with increasingly sophisticated engines, international design resources, racing visibility, and premium-oriented brands such as Benelli. Product availability, branding, and model names vary by market, and many models are sold under different brand identities or through regional partners.
History
Qianjiang Motorcycle Group was founded in 1985 in Wenling, Zhejiang Province, and developed into one of China's major manufacturers of two-wheeled vehicles. The company produces motorcycles and scooters for the domestic market and has also built capabilities in electric vehicles, engines, suspension components, and all-terrain vehicles. Its overseas marketing activity dates to 1999, when Qianjiang began selling motorcycles outside China. The acquisition of Benelli in 2005 was a defining step in Qianjiang's international strategy. Benelli gave the group ownership of a historic Italian name and an engineering and design base in Pesaro. Qianjiang announced further financial support for Benelli in 2009 to assist the brand's revival. Benelli subsequently became an important part of the group's middleweight and premium-oriented international portfolio, including adventure, naked, sport, and touring models. Geely became Qianjiang's largest shareholder in September 2016. This brought the motorcycle manufacturer into the orbit of a major Chinese automotive group while leaving Qianjiang operating as a specialist motorcycle business. Qianjiang also established a joint venture with Marzocchi to manufacture motorcycle suspension products in China. During the late 2010s and early 2020s, the company expanded from conventional commuter and small-displacement products toward more ambitious performance motorcycles. In 2019, Harley-Davidson selected Qianjiang as a development partner for a 338cc motorcycle intended initially for China and other Asian markets. Qianjiang's own engineering program emphasized multi-cylinder engines. The SRK 600RR, launched in 2020, used a Benelli-designed engine and was promoted as China's first four-cylinder motorcycle. Qianjiang later developed an 800cc four-cylinder unit for the SRK 800RR, showed plans for a 600cc V-four muscle cruiser, and associated a 1000RR superbike with an MV Agusta engine. The company also announced work on a Supermono-style engine and patented a 900cc parallel-twin concept intended for use by Benelli. QJMOTOR increased its international visibility through trade shows, distribution, racing, and partnerships. The brand was presented at EICMA in Milan in 2022. In the same year it sponsored Avintia Esponsorama Racing in Moto3. From the 2023 season it became the principal sponsor of Gresini Racing in Moto2. Qianjiang also entered a strategic relationship with MV Agusta in 2023 for distribution in China and planned production of Lucky Explorer models, although production of the 5.5 version was halted after Pierer Mobility acquired a 25.1 percent stake in MV Agusta. QJMOTOR entered the United States market in 2023 with 11 models. In 2024, SIMA became exclusive distributor for QJMOTOR in Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. Today, Qianjiang combines high-volume Chinese manufacturing with a multi-brand and international approach. QJMOTOR covers scooters, commuter motorcycles, sport and naked bikes, cruisers, adventure models, electric vehicles, and ATVs, while Benelli supplies a distinct Italian-branded range. Model availability and branding differ by country, and some products are rebadged or distributed under other names.
