Overview
Postimees Group, legally AS Postimees Grupp, is an Estonian media holding company headquartered in Tallinn. It is one of the largest media groups in the Baltic region and is best known for Postimees, one of Estonia's major daily newspapers. The group operates across print and digital journalism, regional publishing, news-agency services, television, radio, streaming, entertainment, direct marketing, and selected e-commerce and classified-media activities. The business traces its origins to 1991, when AS Postimees was established during the period in which Estonia restored its independence. The company was connected to the revival of the newspaper title Postimees, whose predecessor had operated under the name Edasi during the Soviet period. In 1998, the company was renamed AS Eesti Meedia, while the Postimees newspaper operation was separated into a subsidiary. That year Norwegian media company Schibsted acquired the group, bringing it into an international media portfolio. During the Schibsted period, Eesti Meedia expanded its Estonian newspaper and audiovisual activities. In 2008 it formed AS Ühinenud Ajalehed with Pressinvest to consolidate regional newspaper ownership. The joint venture brought together titles including Pärnu Postimees, Sakala, Virumaa Teataja, Järva Teataja, and Valgamaalane, later renamed Lõuna-Eesti Postimees. The group also developed online news portals, acquired or operated broadcasting assets, and became associated with Baltic News Service and classified-advertising businesses. Schibsted agreed to leave the Baltic market in 2013. Ownership was acquired by a management-led investment vehicle, TAMM Meedia OÜ, and by a company connected with Estonian entrepreneur Margus Linnamäe. Linnamäe subsequently acquired the remaining management-held stake in 2015 and became the controlling owner. In the same period, Postimees and the regional newspaper business were consolidated. In April 2017, Eesti Meedia absorbed several Estonian subsidiaries, including Kanal 2, Trio LSL, Raadio Elmar, Baltic News Service entities, and other operating companies. The company adopted the name AS Postimees Grupp in February 2019. Its portfolio includes Estonian-language, Russian-language, and English-language news services; regional newspapers and their websites; the Postimees publishing operation; entertainment brands such as Elu24 and Limon; and the news agencies Baltic News Service and LETA. The group has also maintained a Latvian media presence through TVNET GRUPA and related assets. Television and radio activities were reorganized during the early 2020s. A new television-focused company, ultimately named Duo Media Networks, began operating in 2021. It combined Postimees Group's television and radio assets with additional Baltic television channels and distribution activities. Its portfolio includes Kanal 2, thematic television services, radio stations such as Kuku, Elmar, and MyHits, and streaming services including Duo Play and Pleier. The group also sold its Baltic Classifieds business to Apax Partners in 2019. Postimees Group occupies an influential position in Estonia's media market, but its ownership structure and editorial governance have attracted criticism. In 2017, Postimees journalists publicly alleged that owner Margus Linnamäe and senior management had attempted to influence editorial policy. In 2020, journalists at the Lithuanian news outlet 15min, associated with the wider Baltic media environment, resigned amid objections to a proposed editorial restructuring and alleged management interference. These controversies have made editorial independence a recurring issue in discussion of the group's ownership and governance.
History
Postimees Group originated in 1991 as AS Postimees, during Estonia's restoration of independence. Its formation was associated with the return of the Postimees newspaper name, replacing the Soviet-era title Edasi. In 1998, the company was renamed AS Eesti Meedia, while the newspaper activity was placed in a new AS Postimees subsidiary. Schibsted acquired Eesti Meedia in the same year, making it part of a Norwegian-owned Baltic media operation. The group expanded beyond its flagship daily through regional newspapers, digital publishing, broadcasting, and news services. In 2008, Eesti Meedia and Pressinvest created AS Ühinenud Ajalehed, a joint venture intended to consolidate regional newspaper interests. Its initial portfolio included Pärnu Postimees, Sakala, Virumaa Teataja, Järva Teataja, and Valgamaalane. The last of these was renamed Lõuna-Eesti Postimees in 2017. Over time, the wider group also became involved in television, radio, online classifieds, entertainment publishing, and the Baltic News Service. Schibsted announced its withdrawal from the Baltic market in 2013. A management group comprising Toomas Issak, Andres Kull, Meelis Luht, and Mart Kadastik established TAMM Meedia OÜ, which acquired half of Eesti Meedia. The other half was acquired by a company linked to Margus Linnamäe. In 2015, Linnamäe acquired the shares held by TAMM Meedia, becoming the controlling owner. Mart Kadastik left the supervisory-board chairmanship, while Sven Nuutmann became chair of the management board. Eesti Meedia also acquired the outstanding shares in Ühinenud Ajalehed and merged the Postimees and regional newspaper activities. A major internal consolidation took effect on 3 April 2017, when Eesti Meedia absorbed seven Estonian subsidiaries. The affected businesses included Kanal 2, radio operators Trio LSL and Raadio Elmar, Baltic News Service companies, White Wizard, and the earlier company operating Postimees and other domestic newspapers. The Estonian classified-portal operator Allepal was excluded from that merger. The same year brought a public dispute over editorial independence: Postimees department heads sent a memo to owner Margus Linnamäe and general manager Sven Nuutmann alleging unprecedented pressure concerning coverage choices and the tone of reporting. In February 2019, AS Eesti Meedia changed its name to AS Postimees Grupp. The reorganization was accompanied by the creation of Media Investments & Holding OÜ as a new parent structure. The group also sold its Baltic Classifieds business to Apax Partners in 2019, sharpening its focus on media and related communications activities. In October 2020, the owner announced plans to create a dedicated television company and transfer Postimees Group's television assets to it. The new business, Duo Media Networks, formally began operating in 2021 under the leadership of Jüri Pihel and Risto Rosimannus. It brought together the group's television and radio operations, additional channels formerly associated with Kids Network Television, and former Sony Pictures Television linear channels in the Baltic states. Postimees Group consequently developed a structure in which the parent group retained broad media interests while a specialist subsidiary managed much of the audiovisual portfolio. The group's current business scope, as described in the available reference material, includes national and regional newspapers, Estonian, Russian, and English digital news portals, Baltic News Service, Postimees Kirjastus, entertainment portals Elu24 and Limon, direct-mail provider Target Master, and Latvian businesses including TVNET GRUPA and LETA. Through Duo Media Networks, the wider group is also associated with television channels, radio stations, streaming products, and distribution operations in Estonia and other Baltic markets. Its history reflects the broader transformation of Baltic media from newspaper-centered publishing toward integrated digital, audio, video, and platform businesses.
