Overview
Polyvinyl Record Co., commonly known as Polyvinyl, is an American independent record label headquartered in Champaign, Illinois. The label emerged from the Midwestern do-it-yourself music community and developed from a small fanzine into a multi-artist company with a catalog of more than 400 releases. Its repertoire has included indie rock, emo, experimental pop, power pop, electronic music, and adjacent alternative genres. The company began in 1994 when Illinois high-school students Matt Lunsford and Darcie Knight created Polyvinyl Press, a fanzine intended to document and celebrate the regional DIY scene. The project expanded beyond publishing in 1995, when an issue was accompanied by a split seven-inch single. In 1996, the final issue of the fanzine was paired with Direction, a 20-track compilation focused on Midwestern independent music. That release marked Polyvinyl's formal transition into a record company. Lunsford and Knight initially operated the label through an equal profit-sharing arrangement. Early signings and releases gave Polyvinyl visibility well beyond Illinois. Rainer Maria's Past Worn Searching and Braid's 1998 album Frame and Canvas helped establish the label's credibility in independent rock, while American Football's 1999 self-titled debut later became one of its best-known and best-selling releases. The relationship with American Football member Mike Kinsella also developed into a longer association involving projects such as Owen, Joan of Arc, and Their / They're / There. In 2001, the founders moved operations from Danville to the Urbana-Champaign area to support the label's growth. Polyvinyl supplemented releases with touring and community-building activity, including a 2003 winter tour involving several of its artists. In 2004, the label entered a distribution arrangement with Alternative Distribution Alliance and added of Montreal to its roster. The partnership broadened Polyvinyl's reach, and of Montreal's Satanic Panic in the Attic became the first release issued by the band through the label. The label's commercial and critical profile grew during the 2000s. Of Montreal's Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? became Polyvinyl's best-selling album according to the label's historical account. Other important releases included Architecture in Helsinki's Places Like This and Japandroids' Post-Nothing. Polyvinyl continued to mark its history through anniversary concerts, including events for its tenth, fifteenth, and twentieth anniversaries. During the 2010s, the roster expanded to include artists such as Alvvays, Beach Slang, Jay Som, White Reaper, and others. Alvvays' self-titled debut and the band's Antisocialites, White Reaper's The World's Best American Band, and Jay Som's Everybody Works received substantial critical attention. In 2015, Polyvinyl moved to a larger location in Champaign, and in 2016 it commemorated its twentieth anniversary with Polyvinyl Plays Polyvinyl, a compilation of label artists covering one another's songs. Polyvinyl has also developed a services-and-partnership model for working with smaller independent labels. It has provided distribution, accounting, fulfillment, shipping, and webstore support while preserving partner labels' creative autonomy. Its relationships have included Double Double Whammy, Keeled Scales, and Father/Daughter Records. In 2023, Polyvinyl announced a collaboration to purchase and preserve the Urbana house associated with American Football, treating the site as part of the local musical heritage connected to the label. The brand's identity remains rooted in artist development, independent ownership, physical releases, catalog curation, touring culture, and connections to regional music communities. Its business activities extend beyond issuing recordings to include mail-order sales, direct-to-consumer fulfillment, label services, partnerships, anniversary projects, and music-community philanthropy.
History
Polyvinyl began in Danville, Illinois, as Polyvinyl Press, a fanzine founded in 1994 by high-school students Matt Lunsford and Darcie Knight. The publication documented the Midwestern DIY scene and became a vehicle for recordings as well as writing. A split seven-inch released with the fanzine in 1995 was followed by Direction, a 20-track compilation accompanying the fifth and final issue in 1996. Direction is generally treated as the point at which the fanzine became Polyvinyl Record Co. Lunsford and Knight established an equal profit-sharing model for the label. The company's early catalog included Rainer Maria's Past Worn Searching and Braid's Frame and Canvas, releases that helped bring national attention to the label. American Football's 1999 self-titled debut became a particularly important catalog title and later one of Polyvinyl's strongest sellers. Its connection with Mike Kinsella also extended to releases by Owen, Joan of Arc, and Their / They're / There. In 2001, Polyvinyl relocated from Danville to the Urbana-Champaign area to create a stronger operating base. The label expanded its activity through touring, artist showcases, and video projects. A 2003 winter tour featured Rainer Maria, Mates of State, Owen, and Saturday Looks Good to Me. In 2004, Polyvinyl began distribution through Alternative Distribution Alliance and signed of Montreal. Satanic Panic in the Attic was the band's first Polyvinyl album. The 2000s brought a larger profile and several commercially important releases. Of Montreal's Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? became the label's best-selling album according to Polyvinyl's historical material. The decade also included Architecture in Helsinki's Places Like This and Japandroids' Post-Nothing. Polyvinyl used anniversary events to connect its catalog with its audience, staging a tenth-anniversary concert in 2006 and a broader fifteenth-anniversary event in 2011. The following decade brought further roster development. Japandroids released Celebration Rock through Polyvinyl, while Alvvays' 2014 self-titled debut became another notable commercial success. Polyvinyl moved into a larger Champaign location in 2015. Beach Slang issued its debut full-length after the move. For the label's twentieth anniversary in 2016, Polyvinyl released Polyvinyl Plays Polyvinyl, a compilation in which twenty artists covered songs by other artists from the roster. The anniversary project also included a skateboard-deck collaboration with Girl Skateboards and artist Jesse LeDoux. In 2017, Polyvinyl released notable albums by White Reaper, Alvvays, and Jay Som. These records received recognition in year-end coverage from multiple music publications. In 2018, the label began donating 10 percent of mail-order revenue on one Friday each month to selected organizations, including groups associated with music education, bodily autonomy, and music-community advocacy. The same period saw Polyvinyl broaden its role from label operator to service provider through a partnership with Double Double Whammy. Polyvinyl subsequently developed similar minority-investment and operational partnerships with Keeled Scales in 2021 and Father/Daughter Records in 2022. In these arrangements, partner labels retained creative autonomy while Polyvinyl contributed capital, distribution, fulfillment, accounting, or shipping infrastructure. In 2023, Polyvinyl announced a collaborative effort to purchase and preserve the Urbana house linked to American Football, reflecting the company's interest in safeguarding the physical and cultural history of the community from which its catalog emerged. Polyvinyl remains an active independent label with a broad catalog, direct-to-consumer operations, and a continuing emphasis on artist-led alternative music.
