Piriform is a United Kingdom software company and brand headquartered in London. It became known internationally for a group of lightweight utilities designed to maintain, diagnose, clean, recover, and optimize personal computers. Its best-known product is CCleaner, a system-cleaning application first released for Microsoft Windows in 2004. CCleaner developed a large user base by offering tools for removing temporary files, browser data, caches, logs, recycle-bin contents, memory dumps, and other potentially unwanted data. It also included facilities for managing startup programs, uninstalling applications, examining parts of the Windows Registry, wiping free space, and, in later versions, updating software and drivers. Piriform's product portfolio expanded beyond CCleaner. Recuva was positioned as a file-recovery utility for restoring deleted files from hard drives, removable media, and other storage devices. Defraggler provided disk-defragmentation and drive-optimization functions, while Speccy presented detailed information about a computer's hardware and operating environment. The portfolio reflected Piriform's original consumer-software strategy: relatively focused utilities that were easy to download and use, with free editions complemented by paid or professional capabilities. CCleaner was initially a Windows-only product. Piriform later broadened its platform reach with a macOS release, an Android edition, and, much later, an iOS application. It also introduced commercial and network-oriented editions for managed deployments. A Chromium-based CCleaner Browser became another part of the product ecosystem, offering features such as advertising blocking and anti-tracking. The browser was distributed as a separate product and, in some installation flows, as an optional addition to CCleaner. Piriform developed a reputation through focused utility software for personal computers. Its most important product, CCleaner, launched for Microsoft Windows in 2004 and targeted the accumulation of temporary files, browser traces, caches, logs, and other system residue. The product also offered tools for managing startup entries, uninstalling software, inspecting Registry-related problems, deleting restore points, and wiping free space. Its simple interface and free distribution helped it become one of the most recognized system-cleaning utilities. The company broadened its portfolio with Recuva, a file-recovery product; Defraggler, a disk-defragmentation utility; and Speccy, a hardware and system-information tool. These products reinforced a common brand proposition centered on practical maintenance rather than enterprise infrastructure. CCleaner was initially restricted to Windows, but Piriform later introduced a Mac version following a public beta program announced in 2011. Shortly afterward, a compromised CCleaner 5.33 release was found to contain the Floxif trojan. The malicious code could establish a backdoor, and the incident was particularly serious because the affected application had a large installed base and was distributed through an apparently trusted software channel. A subsequent release removed the malicious code. In 2019, Avast reported another attempted intrusion into the CCleaner release process, but the effort did not successfully place malware in released software. The brand also encountered criticism about privacy controls and installer practices. CCleaner 5.45 contained an Active Monitoring behavior that re-enabled itself because of a coding error. Piriform said the component was not transmitting the information alleged by critics, renamed the function Smart Cleaning, and revised controls around telemetry. Separately, some installers offered Avast or other third-party software. In 2020, Microsoft Defender identified the free installer as a potentially unwanted application because of that bundling behavior. Piriform subsequently made third-party installation optional. Following Avast's merger with NortonLifeLock, Piriform became part of Gen Digital. The brand continues to operate as a utility-software business within that wider group. Its history combines strong consumer recognition and broad distribution with recurring scrutiny of privacy, bundling, and software-supply-chain practices.
