Overview
Pi Notebook is the trade name of a Japanese notebook produced by stationery manufacturer KING JIM and commercialized with Japanese lifestyle retailer Loft. Its defining feature is that the ruled lines are formed from a continuous sequence of the digits of pi, beginning with 3.1415926535 and continuing across the page. The concept turns an otherwise ordinary writing notebook into a novelty stationery object that combines mathematics, graphic design, and everyday utility. The idea originated during a KING JIM project meeting around 2016. It was discussed on the Japanese television program Gacchiri Monday! but was initially abandoned before reaching a formal commercialization presentation. The concept later attracted substantial public attention when KING JIM posted an image of the proposed notebook on its official Twitter account on March 14, 2017, the date commonly observed as Pi Day. The post generated more than 12,000 retweets within three days, demonstrating demand for a product that had previously been treated as an unsuccessful or shelved proposal. Loft noticed the social-media response and contacted KING JIM. The two companies subsequently decided to commercialize the product as a collaboration. KING JIM designers developed the cover, page details, and overall presentation. The first release was announced in June 2017, with an initial production and sales plan of 2,000 copies for each participating side. A limited advance sale took place on June 23, 2017, through the Loft Net Store and at Ginza Loft, which had opened that day. The online stock sold out in 17 minutes, while the Ginza Loft allocation sold out during the day. A broader Japanese release followed on July 25, 2017, through Loft stores nationwide and the Loft online store. The original notebook was offered in green and white, visually associated with blackboards and whiteboards. It used A5 paper, twin-ring binding, and 50 pages. The cover incorporated pi and other mathematical symbols and circular forms, while the page guides were designed to remain usable rather than overwhelmingly decorative. Each page contained approximately 3,800 digits, and the date area included “3.14,” reinforcing the mathematical theme. The initial retail price was 380 yen before tax; the limited advance-sale edition was priced at 314 yen before tax, echoing the first digits of pi. KING JIM and Loft extended the concept through the Miscellaneous Ruled Notebook series. The second product, released in March 2018, replaced pi with reference sequences and lists including Japanese era names, poems from the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, prime numbers, country names, and Japanese city names. A further group of designs appeared at Loft’s Stationery Festival in July and August 2020, using elemental symbols, the new Japanese era name, and commonly used Japanese kanji as page guides. The Pi Notebook became a notable example of social-media-led product development in Japanese stationery. Loft included it among its Heisei-era hit stationery items in an Asahi Weekly feature published in January 2018. The second-series notebooks also generated reported sales of more than 25,000 units during their first three months. The product’s significance lies less in scale than in its demonstration that a shelved idea can be revived through direct interaction with an online audience, then converted into a limited, highly shareable retail product.
History
Pi Notebook began as an internal KING JIM stationery concept discussed at a project meeting around 2016. The idea was also presented in connection with the Japanese television program Gacchiri Monday!, which aired material about the project on June 12, 2016. It did not initially proceed to commercialization and was treated as a shelved proposal. The concept was revived through KING JIM's social-media activity. On March 14, 2017, Pi Day, the company published an image of the notebook on its official Twitter account. The post showed a notebook whose writing guides were made from the digits of pi. Public interest was immediate: within three days, the post had been retweeted more than 12,000 times. The response indicated that the unusual concept had an audience despite its earlier rejection. A representative of Loft saw the post and approached KING JIM. The companies agreed to develop the item as a collaborative product. KING JIM's designers refined the cover, page layout, and decorative details, while Loft provided the retail channel. On June 19, 2017, the partners announced that the notebook would be commercialized, with an initial plan involving 2,000 copies for each side. The first advance sale occurred on June 23, 2017, through the Loft Net Store and at Ginza Loft. The online release began at 11:00 and sold out by 11:17. Ginza Loft's limited allocation of 314 copies also sold out during the day. The 314-copy quantity and the 314-yen pre-tax price used the opening digits of pi as part of the product experience. On July 25, the notebook entered wider distribution through Loft locations across Japan and the Loft online store at a regular price of 380 yen before tax. The original Pi Notebook used A5 paper, twin-ring binding, and 50 pages. It was sold in green and white versions, with colors evoking blackboards and whiteboards. The cover displayed pi, mathematical formulas, and circular motifs. The ruling consisted of a long sequence of pi digits, beginning with 3.1415926535. The numbers were intended to remain legible but relatively discreet, allowing the product to function as a notebook rather than merely a display object. A page contained roughly 3,800 digits, and the date field featured “3.14.” The concept expanded in March 2018 with the Miscellaneous Ruled Notebook series. Instead of pi, the ruling used structured information such as Japanese era names, the poems of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, prime numbers extending from 2 to 5107, the 193 United Nations member countries recognized in the relevant design period, and Japanese city names arranged according to administrative coding order. These notebooks broadened the idea from a single mathematical novelty into a format for embedding reference material in stationery. Reported sales for the second release exceeded 25,000 units in the three months from launch through the end of May 2018. Further designs were released at Loft's Stationery Festival in July and August 2020. These used elemental symbols, the new Japanese era name, and Jōyō kanji. In January 2018, Asahi Weekly included the Pi Notebook among Loft's Heisei-era hit products in the stationery category. The product is therefore principally known as a Japanese limited-style stationery success story and as an example of online audience engagement influencing commercialization. Publicly available reference material does not establish a separate corporate entity behind the name, an independent headquarters, a current global distribution network, or a definitive current production status.

Products and positioning
A novelty stationery product positioned at the intersection of practical note-taking, mathematical design, collectible paper goods, and social-media-driven limited releases.
Pi NotebookMathematics-themed notebook2017
The original product uses the digits of pi as its ruled writing guides. It is an A5, 50-page notebook with twin-ring binding, offered in green and white. Its cover combines pi, mathematical formulas, and circular imagery. The digits are arranged to be readable without making the pages impractical for ordinary writing; each page contains approximately 3,800 digits. The date section includes “3.14,” and the limited advance release used a 314-yen pre-tax price as an additional mathematical reference.
Miscellaneous Ruled NotebookReference-list notebook2018
The second-generation concept replaced pi with informational sequences and lists. Designs included Japanese era names from Taika through Heisei, the poems associated with the 100 poets of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, prime numbers from 2 to 5107, country names, and Japanese city names organized by administrative coding order. It extended the original product's idea of making factual information serve as both page decoration and writing structure.
Third themed notebook seriesReference-list notebook2020
The later series, presented at Loft's Stationery Festival in 2020, used elemental symbols, the new Japanese era name, and Jōyō kanji as its page ruling. It continued the product family's approach of turning organized cultural, linguistic, or scientific data into a distinctive stationery design.
