History
PFU's history combines the development of Japanese minicomputers, OEM business systems, microprocessors, enterprise imaging and specialist computer peripherals. The older corporate lineage began with Unoke Electronic Industrial, founded in Unoke, Ishikawa, on November 1, 1960. The company manufactured minicomputers and was supported commercially by Uchida Yoko, an office-equipment trading company that was seeking to enter computing. In 1969, Unoke Electronic Industrial was renamed USAC Electronic Industrial. USAC later worked with Fujitsu and Uchida Yoko under a partnership begun in 1971, developing and supplying computer systems for business use. The organization also established a volleyball team in 1979, which ultimately became the PFU BlueCats. Panafacom was formed on July 2, 1973, with participation from Fujitsu, Fuji Electric and the Matsushita Group. Its business included OEM production for Fujitsu and Matsushita, as well as the design of minicomputers and microcomputers. A substantial proportion of its staff came from Fujitsu engineering operations. In April 1975, Panafacom announced the L-16A, also identified as the MN1610, a 16-bit single-chip microprocessor. The company followed this with the Panafacom Lkit-16 evaluation and development system in March 1977. The MN1610 family supported a series of Panafacom computers. The C-15, announced in May 1978, was an industrial personal computer with a monochrome display, cassette storage and 16 KB of memory. The C-180, announced in 1980, was a more capable office computer using two MN1610A processors. Initially supplied to OEM customers, it was later marketed by Panafacom and sold through related Fujitsu and Matsushita product channels. Fujitsu marketed it as the FACOM 9450 and Matsushita as the C-18. The C-280 followed in 1983 with two MN1613 processors and improved display capabilities; partner versions included Fujitsu's FACOM 9450II and Matsushita's Operate 7000. The C-380 appeared in 1985 with an MN1617 processor, a separate display controller, expanded memory and higher-resolution graphics. Fujitsu sold a related model as the FACOM 9450 Sigma, while Matsushita used the Operate 8000 name. Panafacom and USAC Electronic Industrial merged in 1987 to form PFU. The new company combined minicomputer expertise, OEM relationships and engineering resources from both predecessors. The FACOM 9450 family eventually reached approximately 250,000 Fujitsu-branded units by 1988 and was followed by Fujitsu's FMR series, while PFU continued to evolve beyond its original computer-manufacturing role. A major later development was PFU's move into document imaging. Fujitsu spun off its image-scanner product lines to PFU in 2001. PFU scanners, sold under the Fujitsu name for many years, became a significant enterprise product line and gave the company an international presence in document capture. PFU also developed embedded computers and provided IT consulting and information-system services. The Happy Hacking Keyboard became another important PFU business. First introduced in 1996 and developed with computer engineer Eiichi Wada, it emphasized a compact layout and professional programming use. The Lite model was produced for broader distribution, while the Professional line was later co-developed with Topre after Fujitsu Takamisawa Component ended keyboard production in Japan. By 2015, the Happy Hacking Keyboard series had shipped 400,000 units. PFU became a wholly owned subsidiary of Fujitsu in 2010. Ricoh announced the acquisition of 80 percent of PFU in April 2022 and acquired the remaining 20 percent from Fujitsu in March 2025. PFU is consequently part of the Ricoh Group and continues to operate as an information-technology company focused on scanners and imaging, embedded computing, keyboards and related enterprise services.
