Overview
Perekrestok, also transliterated as Perekryostok and written in Russian as Перекрёсток, is a Russian supermarket chain operated within X5 Retail Group. The brand name translates approximately as “crossroad” or “intersection.” It occupies the supermarket segment of X5’s retail portfolio, complementing the group’s larger Pyaterochka convenience and proximity-store network and other formats. The chain began in 1994 when its first supermarket opened in Moscow. It initially developed as an urban supermarket concept offering a broader assortment and a more spacious shopping environment than smaller neighborhood formats. In 1998, Perekrestok became the first Russian retail chain to open a modern distribution center, located in Paveltsevo near Sheremetyevo Airport. This investment supported the development of a more organized supply and replenishment system as the chain expanded. Perekrestok began expanding beyond Moscow in 2002. Its regional development helped turn the brand from a Moscow-centered operator into a national supermarket network. In 2006, Perekrestok merged with Pyaterochka, creating X5 Retail Group. The Perekrestok name and retail identity were retained, while the merger provided access to a larger corporate organization, shared logistics capabilities, purchasing scale, technology resources, and portfolio management. The chain has periodically refreshed its store model. In 2008, it tested a premium-format concept called Green Perekrestok in Rostov-on-Don, followed by a Moscow opening in 2009. Although the Green format did not remain a separate large-scale identity, some of its design and merchandising features informed later modernization efforts. In 2014, Perekrestok adopted a new store concept emphasizing updated retail equipment, more effective use of selling space, and redesigned interiors and exteriors. A further concept rollout was under way by February 2020. The updated format was designed around frequent shopping, convenience, fresh food, and ready-to-eat or ready-to-go purchases. Around half of the selling space was allocated to fresh categories such as fruit and vegetables, dairy, cheese, deli meats, fresh fish and meat, as well as salad bars, bakeries, and cafés. The concept also included a dedicated health-food section and additional in-store services. Perekrestok has also served as a testing ground for X5 retail technologies. Projects have included free smart Wi-Fi in selected Moscow stores, machine-learning-based personalization of Perekrestok Club loyalty memberships, automated demand and replenishment planning, electronic shelf labels, video analytics, smart shelves, digital information panels, self-scanning, and self-checkout. In 2019, X5 opened a Perekrestok-based laboratory store in Moscow to evaluate these technologies before potentially deploying them across its retail formats. As of 31 December 2019, Perekrestok operated 852 stores and generated RUB 273 billion in revenue. The same reference notes that 11 of X5 Retail Group’s 39 distribution centers served the large-format Perekrestok and Karusel businesses. The chain remains an active Russian supermarket brand under X5 Retail Group, positioned around full-range grocery shopping, fresh food, convenient services, and progressively digitalized retail operations.
History
Perekrestok was established in 1994, when it opened its first supermarket in Moscow. The chain was created as a modern grocery retail format serving urban customers with a wider assortment and larger selling areas than small neighborhood stores. Its development coincided with the formation of Russia’s modern organized retail sector. In 1998, Perekrestok opened a distribution center in Paveltsevo near Sheremetyevo Airport. This facility was described as the first modern distribution center opened by a Russian retail chain and represented an early investment in centralized logistics, inventory control, and store replenishment. The company began expanding into other Russian regions in 2002, gradually extending the brand beyond its original Moscow base. A major structural change occurred in 2006, when Perekrestok and Pyaterochka merged to form X5 Retail Group. Perekrestok continued operating under its established name, while becoming one of X5’s principal retail formats. The new group enabled greater purchasing power and shared infrastructure across formats, including logistics, information technology, marketing, and supply-chain management. Perekrestok experimented with format differentiation during the following years. In 2008, it opened the first Green Perekrestok premium supermarket in Rostov-on-Don, followed by a Moscow location in 2009. The experiment informed later modernization work, even though Green Perekrestok did not become the chain’s dominant identity. In 2014, Perekrestok introduced a redesigned store concept with new retail equipment, improved selling-space allocation, and revised interior and exterior design. The chain’s modernization increasingly incorporated digital tools. In July 2017, Perekrestok introduced Smart Wi-Fi, with a plan to create free Wi-Fi service in 250 Moscow supermarkets. The network also provided a channel for advertising and push notifications. In November 2017, X5 introduced machine-learning methods for targeted marketing to members of the Perekrestok Club loyalty program. The system used purchase frequency, basket size, product preferences, shopping times, price sensitivity, and other behavioral indicators to segment customers and generate personalized offers. In May 2018, X5 completed a large project to automate demand and replenishment planning for stores and distribution centers serving Perekrestok and Karusel. The project redesigned logistics, marketing, and sales processes and introduced end-to-end supply-chain management. The reported results included a 17 percent improvement in forecast accuracy, a 5 percent increase in product availability on shelves, and a 13 percent reduction in inventory levels. Perekrestok reached its 800th store in August 2019. Later that year, X5 opened a Perekrestok-based laboratory store in Moscow to test electronic shelf labels, video analytics, smart shelves, digital information panels, self-scanning, and self-checkout. Successful technologies could then be evaluated in pilot installations across Perekrestok, Pyaterochka, and Karusel. By February 2020, the chain was rolling out another store concept. It responded to changing shopping habits by increasing the role of fresh foods and convenient meal solutions. Around half of the selling space was devoted to fresh categories, salad bars, bakeries, cafés, and related services, with a dedicated health-food section. At 31 December 2019, the cited company information recorded 852 Perekrestok stores and RUB 273 billion in revenue, while 11 of X5 Retail Group’s 39 distribution centers served the Perekrestok and Karusel large-format businesses. The brand continued its marketing and customer-experience activity in the early 2020s. In 2021, it received five Red Apple awards for the #Rebirth project and the Grocery Garden campaign associated with HELP. In 2022, it received five Customer Experience World Awards. Management leadership also changed over time, with Andrey Kalmykov becoming head of Perekrestok in August 2022 according to the cited reference. Perekrestok remains an active X5 Retail Group supermarket brand.
