Overview
Penn Central Transportation Company was formed in 1968 by the merger of the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central Railroad. Due to mismanagement and financial difficulties, it filed for bankruptcy in 1970, becoming the largest corporate bankruptcy in U.S. history at the time. Its assets were later absorbed into Conrail.
