Overview
Oshan was a Chinese automobile marque operated by Changan Automobile. Its origins lay in Changan's commercial-vehicle division, historically associated with microvans and light trucks. The Oshan name was first used on a minivan shown in 2015, and the division was subsequently repositioned for passenger vehicles under the Changan Oshan name in April 2017. The brand name was derived from Oushang, an earlier minivan model in the Chana commercial-vehicle portfolio. The marque was designed to broaden Changan's passenger-car presence with a range that combined practical people carriers, compact and midsize sport-utility vehicles, sedans, and electrified or technology-oriented products. Early vehicles largely reflected the value-oriented and utility-focused character of the former commercial-vehicle business. The initial range included the CX70, X70A, A600, A800, and Cosmos, alongside COS-branded models that were positioned as more substantial or stylistically distinctive products. Oshan progressively added models developed specifically for the passenger-car market rather than relying solely on commercial-vehicle derivatives. The brand's SUV expansion became particularly important. The COS1° and COS1° GT entered the midsize-SUV segment, while the COS3° and COS5° addressed smaller SUV categories. The X5 and X5 Plus, X7 and X7 Plus, and the Z6 extended the portfolio across compact and midsize SUVs. The Z6, introduced in 2021, represented a more avant-garde design direction and reflected Oshan's effort to move beyond its earlier reputation for relatively simple, low-cost utility vehicles. Oshan also experimented with smaller electric mobility through the Neo II, although that model was produced for only a limited period and did not achieve broad popularity. The marque's portfolio also included vehicles connected to wider Changan product and industrial arrangements. Following the bankruptcy of the Changan Suzuki joint venture, the Suzuki Alivio sedan was reportedly continued for a limited period with Oshan branding as the Oshan Qiyue from 2022 to 2023. This was a short-lived addition rather than a major strategic pillar. Changan began restructuring its brand architecture at the end of 2023. The group announced plans to phase out Oshan, transfer remaining products and sales activities into the Changan brand, and reduce duplication among its marques. The last conventional Oshan-branded vehicles were consequently rebranded or absorbed into Changan's range, including the vehicle later known as the Changan UNI-Z. The brand was described as discontinued in early 2024. However, a battery-electric sedan based on the Eado/Lamore architecture and supporting battery swapping was introduced under the Oshan name in November 2024 as the Oshan 520. This creates an unusual transition in which Oshan was being retired as a broad standalone portfolio while the name was still used for a later electric product. The brand's present legal and commercial status therefore requires careful qualification.
History
Oshan developed from Changan Automobile's commercial-vehicle operations rather than from a separately founded automobile company. The parent division concentrated on microvans and light trucks and used the Chana identity for much of its earlier activity. The Oshan name first appeared on a minivan presented in September 2015. That vehicle, associated with the Cosmos introduction, helped establish Oshan as a portfolio identity within Changan's broader commercial-vehicle business. The earlier Oushang name also influenced the eventual Oshan brand name. In April 2017, Changan renamed the division Changan Oshan and used it to support a stronger push into passenger vehicles. The minivan range was reorganized, with the earlier Oushang-related vehicle subsequently identified as the Oshan A600 or Changxing. Other MPVs, including the A800 and Cosmos, continued to provide practical family and people-moving products. At the same time, Changan began adding SUVs and models designed with a more passenger-car-oriented character. The first major SUV phase included the CX70 and X70A, followed by the COS1°, COS1° GT, COS3°, and COS5°. These models occupied different sizes and price positions, allowing Oshan to cover compact and midsize SUV demand. In 2019, the Oshan X7 entered the midsize SUV market. The X7 and later X7 Plus became among the best-known products associated with the marque. The compact X5 and X5 Plus broadened the SUV offering further, while the Z6, presented in 2021, used a more distinctive and technologically styled design language. This progression reflected an effort to reposition Oshan from a former commercial-vehicle derivative brand into a modern mass-market passenger marque. Oshan also explored smaller and electrified vehicles. The Neo II was produced as a small electric city car for approximately one year, but it did not gain significant popularity. The marque's sedan presence remained limited. In 2022, following the bankruptcy of the Changan Suzuki joint venture, the Suzuki Alivio was reportedly retained temporarily with Oshan logos as the Qiyue. The model continued only through 2023 and did not become a durable part of the brand's identity. By late 2023, Changan was reorganizing its brand structure. The group sought to reduce overlap among its marques and consolidate products and retail channels under the principal Changan name. Oshan was included in this process, with its remaining models transferred or rebranded. The phase-out culminated in early 2024 when the last conventional Oshan vehicle was associated with the Changan UNI-Z rather than the Oshan name. The transition was not entirely clean-cut. In November 2024, Changan introduced the Oshan 520, a battery-electric sedan related to the Eado/Lamore and described as capable of battery swapping. The launch meant that the Oshan name continued to appear on at least one electric product after the planned discontinuation of the broader standalone marque. Consequently, reference descriptions differ in whether Oshan should be treated as discontinued or as a limited residual product marque. Its established passenger-car portfolio and sales network were absorbed into Changan, while the Oshan 520 represents a later and narrower use of the name.
